"Best LCD TV Value" on by Relayer71

Pros: Lowest price brand name 1080p 40'. Great picture quality with excellent black level (AFTER tweaking). Attractive bezel & light weight.

Cons: Interface/on-screen menus aren't very streamlined or intuitive. SD content doesn't look that great. Overly saturated colors & not so great picture out of the box.

Summary: You just can't beat this LCD for the price. Seeing it next to a Samsung, Sony & Panasonic at BB the excellent Black level immediately stood out. The overall picture looked just as good as the other TVs which cost at least $200 more (although the Panasonic plasma had a bit more detail than the the other 3),

Comparing to the LG & Insignia which were similarly priced it was no contest, the Toshiba/Sony/Samsung/Panasonic crushed those so for the same price the Toshiba was an excellent deal.

Getting it home was a different story but then again most of these LCDs require some calibration. The 3 presets are good starting points but you should not judge the quality of this set based on those - lighting, source, sitting position and personal taste of course all play a part and taking the time to tweak the settings and testing with different sources pays off big time.

While out of the box the colors are very saturated with overpowering reds, setting the temperature to cool, lowering the backlight and brightness to "normal" and not "retail store max" levels and reducing the color level to the 36 - 38 mark achieves a very natural and balanced image which is very pleasing to the eyes.

Setup is fairly simple though the remote and on-screen interface aren't very user friendly. Still, had no issues setting it up. Plenty of connections (3 HDMI, 2 component, etc.), cable & DVD work fine through HDMI (no issues), sound output to my receiver for surround via optical cable works. The only issue is that standard definition programming generally looks poor but it usually depends on the channel so I blame Time Warner cable and/or the Samsung STB I use. Still, HD programming looks great and for a 60hz LCD I have not experienced any motion blur or artifacts/pixelation with any sources, including sports programming (not a huge sports fan but damn, HD basketball looks great on ESPNHD! Go Knicks! Not!).

"great tv at an amazing price" on by bigmanlars40

Pros: great hd picture and plenty of connections

Cons: can't get the remote to control my direct tv box

Summary: i was looking fo my first hdtv for my smallish living room and was consiidering a 37 inch 720p LG model when the guy at the tiger direct store showed me this 40 toshiba for just 50 dollars more (649.00 for the LG and 699.00 for the toshiba) then considering the amount of conections available on this tv it was a no brainer for me...i have an xbox 360 and a ps3 both hooked up via composite conections and a gamecube(soon to be replaced with a wii) hooked via the sd vidio port in the back my directtv box via hdmi and i still have 3 free hdmi ports and the side video port to hook up my video camera..the sound is a little thin but that got fixed with some home theater speakers....all in all for the money you will be hard pressed to find a better 1080p hdtv value on the market...

"good picture hdmi problems" on by freaktor

    Pros: great picture, great price

Cons: I have a ps3 and a motorola PVR that are connected via HDMI. The TV sometimes does not get a signal when the ps3 or PVR is turned on. To get it to work I have to turn the tv on then off. Once it is working it is good.

Summary: Great picture, Great price, Flakey HDMI inputs

"Great TV-priced right with a great picture." on by hattles

Pros: Great picture compared to other brands in the price range. Not a high price, high end Samsung.

Cons: The only problems I've had are with my HD connection, HD inputs at the TV quit working. Switched to my HDcomponent cables-problem solved.

Summary: Would recommend and purchase again without a second thought...minus the HD Monster cables.
