"Just a fantastic picture"
Pros: Big, bright, handles motion well, pleasure to look at
Cons: Ethernet connection a disappointment
Summary: Got this to replace my old rear projection system that finally died, and in hindsight I should have killed that old set years ago.
While I was waiting for this Toshiba to get in stock, I did get a 52" Sharp Aquos for 2 months (thank you to Costco's lenient return policy), and the first impression of the Toshiba was that its brighter, certainly larger, and also seemed sharper than the Aquos. A big step forward!
I've had it for a month now, am very happy, and think it was worth the high price. We have a south facing room with 3 sets of glass doors in southern California, and for the first time I can watch football games when its bright and sunny without lowering all the shades and turning the room dark.
Input is mostly HD Satellite via HDMI, also progressive DVD via component, and VGA from my laptop, and its looks great with everything. Sound is decent, although I mostly use a separate surround sound system.
I did try the Ethernet connection to look at photos off the computer, and that was pretty useless. The folder browser interface was hard to use, and it kept on hitting its max of 1000 pictures because I was on a top level folder like My Photos. But the worst was that it took about 10 seconds to D/L and render each picture, which is just unacceptable. My laptop can D/L and render from the same desktop in less than half a second which is necessary for a decent slide show. Since it has VGA using the laptop works well, and the Ethernet cable will not get used.
One other nit - there is a mention in the manual on how to remove the base when wall mounting, but it does not show up in the table of contents of index. When installing I spent 15 minutes trying to get the base off, couldn't find the answer in the manual, and ending up going online to find out that one has to remove 6 screws on the back. Kind of got things off on the wrong foot.
