"A Great Value" on by midiexpert
Pros: Great picure quality, easy menu, great features for the price
Cons: Cannot adjust vertical size, no pip button on remote
Summary: I have owned this set for approximately two months, and overall I'm extremely pleased with the picture quality, features, and especially the price. Although it is probably not quite at the level of the more well-known brands
TV's of similar size, it offers a tremendous value. To get PIP and POP and a picture that even out of the box was outstanding for this price is very rare. I researched this purchase for many months, and compared many products in stores, etc. This is 1080p resolution, and with an upconverting DVD player, even my plain old DVD's look outstanding. Hi Def programming is outstanding on this set. The only exception has been some apparent minor incompatability with my Motorola hi-def cable box, provided by Verizon FIOS. That is, the cable box allows a maximum resolution of 1080i, not 1080p, and is not able to adjust based on the source broadcast. I set it at 1080i because that is the setting I prefer over 720p. However, a couple of channels' hi-def broadcasts reveal a thin green line at the left edge of the screen, which VIZIO feels may be a cable box issue, since it doesn't show up across the board. Specifically, the NBC affiliate's hi-def station has this problem consistently. Also, I needed to slightly resize the horizontal size when watching standard def programming in "stretch" mode to eliminate some video noise at the top and/or bottom edge of the screen. This may be because the set does not have any type of overscan adjustments, or does not overscan at all. Normally a good thing, but it would have been nice to allow a vertical size, rather than position, adjustment as well to eliminate the green line on the left--if I simply move the picture to the left, it reveals a white edge on the right side--I'm still not sure if this is the TV, and will probably call VIZIO soon to discuss this further, but it is a very minor issue which currently only seems to affect one station.
Otherwise, I like everything about this set. I calibrated the picture using a THX DVD, and also did some tweaking based on CNET's recommended settings--However, I prefer a stronger backlight setting, almost 50%, to what CNET and other web sites recommend, but that's me.
Colors are great, flesh tones realistic, detail and black levels are exceptional for an LCD, and since it's in a very bright room, no glare at all during daytime viewing. I'm getting addicted to watching this TV, and have trouble viewing anything in standard def anymore--although all things considered, the TV displays standard def fairly well.
The PIP and POP functions work very well--currently I am using an HD rabbit ear antenna as my PIP source, which allows me to watch one game on main screen using my cable box, and a local HD version of another channel in the pip/pop screen--nice! Later I plan to hook up a miniature PC for the pip source so I can browse the web while watching another show as well--great for getting stats on a player you are watching live at the same time.
The menu system is easy to use, and I have few complaints about it. Vizio's remote is now backlighted, but has eliminated the dedicated pip button--you have to go into a menu system to active it--but I worked around that by using my cable box remote to bring up the pip function and this works fairly well. Still, I'm probably going to get a Harmony remote soon, as I have a home theatre setup as well, and I would prefer one remote to handle everything at all times.
I would also have preferred for the set to have at least one more HDMI port--3 instead of two, but certainly one can buy an HDMI switcher, or for more $$$, an upgraded A/V receiver with at least 3 HDMI inputs would make the system even more expandable for the future. Certainly there are a lot of input options and putting together this set with my home theatre system makes TV watching exciting again for the first time in years.
Minor quibbles aside, Vizio has done an outstanding job offering a great value to consumers looking for this type of TV, and they seem to have a responsive interactive web site for support, as well. I would heartily recommend this set for anyone looking for a 42" LCD with 1080p. In my view, this is an all-around winner due to it's combination of features, quality and low price. -
"""December 2007 Party time for Vizio Galleva""" on by LordofGames
Pros: Plain Jane controls, no side connections for game players
Cons: Plain Jane controls, no side connections for game players
Summary: To be simple and brief.. First the ********.
Cnet keeps trying to compare LCD's to Plasmas and thats just not kosher. Please consider that LCD is NOT plasma and keep the technologies separate except for the FYI only comparison.
Now note that the Galleva Vizio does have a few more nice things about them and you need to review the spec sheets. To reduce YOUR cost they have left a few of the fidget knobs and adjustimacation thingies off, don't count that against the TV - it's a plus !!
Remember, 70% of us out here in viewer land never touch a setting once the TV is adjusted to our liking.. and have a fit if someone else does !! To many choices causes us to hit reset and start over way too many times.
TRUTH - Its the picture and ONLY the picture that counts to me(and I bet a lot of you folks) I bought it because I liked the picture and my intent is to watch things on it..Right? Thats a YES, I didn't buy it for cuteness or the number of adjustments, I bought it for the PICTURE and the IN HOME warranty plus I didn't have to justify the expense to my wife either.
Fact.. I spent hours in several stores hands on viewing under several light conditions and I DID fiddle with the adjustments on many models. For the mostpart The Viz is as good or better than all other LCD's .
Current street price from Sears, Circuit City and DELL match at $1199.00
Please note I did score at Sears using Thanksgiving and Black Friday price drops, price matching and with a Credit card 10% rebate to bring my net cost on my unit to $840.00 Now that's a nice number.. but I had to work the system for three days to get it.
Plus Plus- the IN home warranty extension can run you 149.00... Note that it's for a FIVE YEAR Factory extension of IN HOME care totaling 6 years.. holy cow kids.. near free and worry free
To end this not so short evaluation.. BUY IT YOU'll LIKE IT cuz you WANTED A NICE PICTURE
I gave it a 10 because its a great unit and meets all my expectations and for the current price, NO other maker comes close in cost vs value..

NOTE that this is 1080P version
Please also note that this is the 1080P version and not the GV42l(the older model 720p)
The addition of one single letter make a world of difference.. higher resolution and greater contrast ration.. plus a Beaut of a pictureUpdated
OMG- was reading and found Vizio not only runs with the bulls(Sony,Sharp and Samsung)
Vizio does it with only 70 employees out of Irvine California...and last years growth was a whopping 3,000 percent.. from 17 million in 2003 to over 676 million in 2006 with 2007 growth to accelerate that..mmmm, methinks the big boys gottem trouble.
You'll also find the reviews split because Cnet has another review listed for the same TV under V Vizio GV42-LF -
"Vizio Quality Control is WAY UP! Vizio is now the #1 LCD HDTV brand in America!" on by Escape Velocity
Pros: overall picute quality, convenience features, connectivity, video processing, excellent tuners, sound quality, detachable speakers, improved remote
Cons: satisfying blacks
Summary: Vizio continues to be THE price/performance leader. Best Value!
Vizio has been working on improving its LCD televisions and it shows. Quality control is much improved. No hums or buzzes are being
reported on this model in particular, but also across the board on GV GALLEVIA LCD models. Backlight uniformity QC is also improved as mentioned in the CNet review. Dynamite picture, excellent functionality and ease of use, very good channel information guide, excellent video processing, and dynamite ATSC, NTSC, and QAM tuners, expansive user settings control, lots of inputs, good warranty performance post sale.
No wonder Vizio is now the #1 LCD HDTV brand in America!
Best Regards

"Vizio VU42LF (no review, same tv) Great TV!" on by DakotaDave
Pros: Ease of Packaging, light weight and Great TV for the Price
Cons: Black lines on side when not in HD. Regular channels a tad fuzzy.
Summary: I love this tv. We bought this at Costco and was a great buy...Only $1,099. People doubt the Vizio brand and go out and buy other more expensive brands when its not necessary. As far as Im concerned this has as good of a picture as any Sony or Toshiba. I've heard of people complain about the sound on these too, but I have no problem, it sounds fine to me, and if I want better; I just turn on the surround sound.
We also have DirecTV HD and the picture is just awesome on the HD channels. It's fine on the regular digital channels; though a tad fuzzy, but not enough to complain about. The eyes get used to it. Now that I have HD; I find my self watching channels and shows I wouldn't normally watch; because it's in HD.
I first found out about Vizio while working at a ritzy hotel here in DM, IA. I was taking a break and noticed the tv in the break room. I saw the name brand was Vizio. I had never heard of it before. When I got home I checked it out on the internet.
Im one for the underdog, and push for the underdog to top the very TOP dogs. I checked on it for months before making my decision on what tv I wanted. I noticed that Vizio was getting better and better ratings and getting more and more popular. I was looking at other brands; like Philips, or Sharp, but they were $300 more than the VU42LF. So that made my decision.
GO VIZIO!!!! -
"What a LCD should be with a piece of mind in price!" on by LCDking
Pros: Awesome picture, great sound, sweet style, great price.
Cons: none really
Summary: I work with a lot of technology and I've tested plenty of LCD televisions, and this here is perfect! Sony's great too, but definitely not worth a few $1,000 more, i think greed has gotten the better of them over the years. This HDTV is perfect choice. We love it! Great HD picture, good even standard mode. Sound is very good, with detachable speaker you can make your own surround sound. Brightness is excellent. I only support good quality and this certainly good quality.
