"For an inexpensive tv The Vizio VP50 is one of the best 50" Tv's for under $2,000.00"
Pros: 15,000:1 Contrast ratio, built in HD tuner, PIP/POP, 2 HDMI inputs, Cost, Aesthetics, great speakers, and picture quality
Cons: The Optical output only works for TV tuner, It is heavier than other TV's in its class, runs slighty hotter than other plasma tv's
Summary: The Good
I went to a number of different stores trying to compare tv?s side by side. It came down to the Panasonic 50 inch and the Vizio VP50. I bought the Vizio because the price was slightly cheaper. The difference in quality seemed minimal, if any at all. I never saw them side by side, both had great pictures.
HD/tv/dvd/sporting events are truly amazing to see. The image is very crisp and the speakers on the TV are killer. Last night I was experimenting with the PIP and found I could play my Wii while watching a movie. You can switch between components?not sure if other TVs have this function but I love it. My PC also looks pretty good when I connect it.
The Bad
I was disappointed to find that the optical output only works when the TV is using the hd tuner. The TV is about 50 pounds heavier than other TV?s. The VP50 also seems to run a hotter than other TVs.
Nonetheless these are minimal problems. To sum it all up I?d say ?Best Plasma TV for under $2,000.00.?Updated
The optical output does work.Updated
I have to say that I dont agree with the Cnet review. The greens are awsome. Infact all of the primary colors seem to be right on par. The black levels seem fine as well.
I beg to differ CNET.com!

Hi DROrr,
I have to chime in on your Vizio discussion. I've had the P50HDM for several years now (before addition of tuner card), and I paid considerably more for the unit than it is priced now. I love this tv, and the picture clarity and color levels are really good. I still compare HDTV's every time I go to stores with electronics, and I find myself very contented with my Vizio when I leave. I'm sure other plasma's have better "scores" on this or that statistic, but for me it really all boils down to how it looks when you watch it (plus the price!). For me the picture quality is superb, and when I think of the price difference, I have to smile and think that everyone else who has plasma tv's has overpaid. Vizio was the first to come out with multiple HDMI inputs, which told me they were thinking for the future, not just to sell tv's today and tomorrow. Good luck with your Vizio, and I'm sure you'll enjoy yours too. -
Can't agree with CNET's opinion. This set has unbelievable deep blacks, Check it out with VOOM HD on the ULTRA channel and you will see what I mean

How did you get the optical out to work. I can't seem to. I have two HDMI connections to the TV and wanted to use the optical out to send the audio to my receiver. Is this possible?
