"No static, great controls, love the "auto-off and on" feature"
Pros: Unit plugs directly into lighter, ease of use, auto off and on, 3 presets, full FM spectrum
Cons: Have not found any yet
Summary: Well, this is my sixth different FM transmitter for my MP3 player and I finally found one that simply works. I travel for work and was disappointed that I could not find one that worked around bigger cities. I was constantly trying to find a station that would work without static. Needless to say, it adversely affected my ability to drive safely and therefore avoid a confrontation with local law enforcement. I?m not saying the ticket is the fault of the faulty FM transmitters, but that?s pretty much what I was thinking at the time. Many of them also only cover four radio stations, not allowing the entire FM spectrum.
I finally bought the iRiver AFT-100 right before another trip to a fairly large city. The first thing I noticed was that I didn?t have to find someplace to stash the unit itself since it plugs directly into the lighter. Sweet! Next was the cool display and ease of programming the three preset buttons from any station within the FM spectrum. How cool is that. I futzed (technical term for ?screwed around with?) the radio until I found 3 stations that seemed unused, set the preset buttons, plugged in my ZEN Micro, and off I went.
Once I turned the volume on the ZEN down to half, no static. Being a Network Engineer, I am always a little skeptical when something works the way it should. Call it a hazard of my profession. But there it was, it just worked. One of the three stations went in and out, but I changed to one of the other two with the push of two buttons and, voila, no more static. Since then I have had it all over and it just works, simple, no complications, no fuss.
One big plus is the "Auto on and off" feature. The unit turns on when it senses audio and turns off after 30 seconds of no signal. Even if your lighter stays powered when the car is turned off, this will not drain your battery and therefore make you sad tomorrow morning.
Usually I point out the flaws of a product along with the strengths, but this product is simple and it works. I don?t have any negatives to say. Maybe they could offer automatic frequency scanning to pick up the three best possible stations. OK, let?s not push it for under $50.
