Score PSP Face Armor Pro

overview

Product summary

The goodThe good: The Score PSP Face Armor Pro is slim and stylish, and it protects the PSP's screen quite well. Its swivel design allows you to move the cover around so it doesn't obscure the screen during gameplay.

The badThe bad: It won't protect the system as a dedicated case would, and it doesn't work particularly well as a viewing stand.

The bottom lineThe bottom line: With the ability to protect the PSP's screen without obscuring it, and the inablility to safeguard much else, the Score Face Armor Pro is a worthy accessory for those who use the PSP to play music, but not for many other PSP owners.

From the neoprene case that comes bundled with the system to more heavy-duty options such as the Score Store and Protect Kit and the Logitech Playgear Pocket, you have plenty of protection options for your PlayStation Portable. While they certainly keep the PSP free from harm, just about every one of those options makes the large-for-a-portable PSP even less pocket-compatible. By contrast, the Score PSP Face Armor Pro offers a more minimalist and compact alternative.

The Face Armor Pro is a 1/4-inch-thick translucent-plastic screen guard that you mount to the top of the PSP using the system's screw holes. The screws on the Face Armor Pro are large and easy to turn; a small coin or a strong fingernail should be enough to firmly attach it. A gap is left open between the screws so you can access the USB port.

As its name implies, the Face Armor Pro is primarily designed to protect your PSP's face--or really, its screen. Since it's translucent, even when it's covering the screen, you can still see what's on the display, though the small Score logo in the center of the shield unnecessarily obscures the view. The Face Armor also covers the PSP's face buttons and direction pad, which means you can't play any games while the shield is in this position.

Score's previous all-black model did a pretty decent job of cutting glare, acting as sort of shade when tilted up. But this model, due to its transparency, doesn't make for much of a glare shield or a privacy protector. Neither is it the sturdiest of stands for movie watching. However, on a more positive note, when flipped all the way around to the back of the PSP, the slight addition of girth does make the PSP a bit easier to grip.

Bottom line: If you're the type who worries about scratching your PSP's screen when you take it out of your pocket or backpack, then the Score PSP Face Armor Pro is a suitable accessory. But don't expect it to offer the same amount of protection as full-body cases such as the Logitech Playgear Pocket.
