Product brief
Description: The Garmin GPSMAP 440 is a 12-channel, maritime global positioning device.Compared to other maritime GPS receivers on the market, it is very inexpensive at around $500.
Pros: Made from ABS plastic material. This is sturdier than the average GPS receiver on the market today, but is to be expected for a GPS receiver of this price.Utilizes WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) technology to achieve an error margin of 3 meters or less.Tracklog function automatically creates a record of the path traveled and stores it as a series of points for later use.Store trip history and map databases on a standard SD memory card. Its removable memory allows for almost unlimited storage of routes and other data.Waterproof receiver stands up to the elements.
Cons: None noted, given available product data.
Suitability: For boaters and water enthusiasts who desire the special safety options associated with a marine receiver.Rugged case design affords the durability needed in some settings. If you are going to be boating or participating in other marine activities, the man overboard (MOB) feature is a must-have.Has an internal antenna which is desirable for activities where an external antenna would get in the way.Convenient depth sounder feature is a bonus for boaters and anglers.
Value: In general, this GPS receiver's features are as expected for this price. This unit is able to store up to 1500 waypoints. This is significantly more than the average GPS device.
