"Hard to use"
Pros: The unit quickly acquires satellites and its position. Also, using the "go to" feature, while it requires pressing 3 buttons AFTER selecting the waypoint to go to, does work reliably.
Cons: I can't set a route using existing waypoints.
Summary: I have a 27' sailboat in Massachusetts, and I bought my Garmin GPSMAP 440s in July of 2008. I will keep the unit, and I depend on it, however it does have some shortcomings.
When setting a route using the chart, you have to set the turning points from the destination BACK to the start point. This is error prone.
The bracket and cable location conflict in a bulkhead mount.
I have not yet found a way to set up a route consisting of multiple existing waypoints with this unit. I can choose a waypoint and navigate directly there with the "go to" feature, and I can set up a route using the "where to" menu by panning through a chart. Why not set up a route by selecting previously entered waypoints? There may be a way to do this, but I don't know what it is.
When I set up a route I have to enter each turn from the destination back towards the starting point. Why do I have to enter turns in this order? It's complicated and error prone.
From the unlikely messages that the unit sometimes displays, I think that the user interface was designed and implemented in a country where English was not the primary language.
When you are moving a turn in a route, sometimes the unit does not let you zoom in on the chart, and sometimes it does.
When I want to add a turn to a route, the unit displays a blank window. The context suggests that I'm to pan around a chart that would be displayed there to locate the turn, but no chart is displayed.
The bracket and cable location conflict in abulkhead mounting configuration. This would not be a problem if the unit is mounted on a horizontal shelf. Garmin could design a cable to work around this problem.
On the upside, the unit quickly acquires satellites and its position. Also, using the "go to" feature, while it requires pressing 3 buttons AFTER selecting the waypoint to go to, does work reliably.
Why it has all those extra menus for celestial information and whether I would like to display an active track in greeen, yellow, blue, magenta, cyan, or white I cannot understand. I would rather that they make it easy to navigate from Marblehead to Provincetown and pass by three turning marks enroute.
