"Garmin makes a great product BUT..."
2.0 starson by johnnyfuegoPros: I like the promise that was made. I like the mounting system. I like the ease of use.
Cons: 200Khz frequency cut became intermittant after two days. Configuring the device is cumbersome. At speed, the device turns off. The processor is still not as "fast" as they claim. The blue chart chips are WAY over priced.
Summary: I think it's a disappointment when you spend $800 on a piece of electronics that barely meets it's promise. The Garmin 541s was something to be excited about, but with something as important and critical as this equipment is, I'm now feeling like I should have given Humminbird a shot. The disappointment goes a step further as I now have to submit an RMA to the reseller which was a total pain in the arse. Open letter to the CEO of Garmin,
Dear Min H. Kao Ph.D.
I must admit, I am not a PhD, nor a CEO of a leading electronics manufacturer. I am however, a very good example of a sport fishing/boating consumer, which gives me expertise that should be of value.
At the same time, I am very familiar with technology from a sales and marketing standpoint. With the decision to invest in many versions of a device, comes the challenge of compromising quality for quantity.
These devices need to be bullet proof with respect to shock and vibration absorption. The 541s cut out at 25kts and very light seas. As sea captains we have a lot of factors to monitor and must rely on our equipment to get us and our passengers safely out and back home again.
Please consider this as your primary mission ? safety of our customers first.
Warmest Regards,
John
