Pros Has ability to be a car, boating, and hiking GPS unit. The interface is straight forward and intuitive. It does very well as a car navigation system and the display is sharp and easy to understand.

Cons If you are looking at using it for Geocaching, the process needed to convert waypoints from the .mgln files to the needed .upt files is a real pain. The system also seems to lockup for no reason even after a firmware upgrade.

Summary I would be very hesitant to purchase this at the retail price but since I got mine for $109.00 I feel I got a great deal, the car navigation part works flawlessly, and the boat part also does what I need, but the hiking part leaves much to be desired especially for geocaching. I usually use mine to load the waypoints for my geocahing trips, use it in car mode and take out my handheld unit to lead me to the spot. It's just too much of a pain converting the .mgln files to .upt files that the hiking mode can read. It also has an annoying habit of losing lock when you get within 30' of a cache and displays a message saying you are close to your desitnation. I wish it would just hold the lock and let me cancel it instead. I tried my friends Garmin I forget the model but it retails for $99.00, I can say that the Magellan Crossover worked better for me, his would constantly try to get me to drive down a raod that I know is a dead end when I would use it to go home, and the arrival time was off anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes, sometimes it would show me arriving early sometimes it would show me arriving late. The Crossover is always within 5 minutes everytime. I would say in summary that if you're looking for an all in one, the Crossover will work but it doesn't do anything great but it will work. If I hadn't gotten mine for such a deal I would opt for the price to get a car unit that lets you upload waypoints and a hand held unit to find your caches.

  • "Promise unfullfilled by inept service"
    on by ddangle

Pros Big scree, easy input, great voice nav, nice marine

Cons can't get maps easily, can't activate maps, SERVICE

Summary Service is impossible. Purchased downloadable maps from Magellan that would not work on device, then could not get downloadable maps to work and they have not fixed this after 9 customer calls. Horrible service, go with Garmin

  • "Great unit! New upgraded map displays are great. unit is very portable. Outdoor mode is a plus!"
    on by Chasanna

Pros Great map display. Route calculation is fast. Text to speech is clear. Unit can be carried in pocket.

Cons On Multi-destination routing each intermediate destination is routed individually as you arrive to a destination.

Summary Love the crossover! Had a pioneer avic-s1 before, but I traded it in for the Crosover. I'm so glad i did. The Crossover is far superior in most ways. Magellan just upgraded the firmaware to give the crossover the same great modern map display and other graphics that come with the Maestro unit. All you have to do is register your Crossover on Magellan's website, then you can download the upgrade for free. Unit is very portable so you can take with you in your pocket or buy the pouch like i did. Route calculations are fast, and spoken directions are clear. I've had the unit for 1 month so far, and routing is accurate and efficient.

  • "Great allarounder"
    on by Tihany1960

Pros Quick warm boot and route recalc, accurate, reasonable

    Cons Not mush so far

Summary I had this unit for a week now.

The Vehicle navigation portion is pretty decent, plenty information - tapping almost any area of the screen takes the user to different additional info pages. Custom POI is a nice touch. Exit POI is also great - although it only works if you are driving on a freeway. Initially couldn't understand why I cannot select this option in town - dumb operator :o)) ??

The outdoor and Marine I haven't tested yet - still have to buy the Canadian topo maps to test out the outdoor part.

MP3 player pretty decent - not compatible with SDHC cards though! I tried a 2MB Nexxtech card and it working good. 8MB Ultra SDHC is not recognized. Has playlists, browsing etc.

All in all I'm very happy with this unit!

  • "Software Hell"
    on by holtjp

    Pros Drawing a Blank

Cons Lousy Software for Outdoor and Boating, Abysmal Customer Support

Summary After dealing with the mapping software for boating, I now have such an intense dislike for Magellan that I want to go stand in stores and tell strangers not to waste their money on any of the company's products. Any company that could devise such a bad software system should be run out of business. Customer support is terrible and is available for only limited periods. The website that provides unlock codes has been down for more than a week, with no end in sight.
