"So much promised, so little delivered."
Pros: Displays USGS 1:24,000 topo maps. It's why I bought it, the only one on the market (at the time) to do so. For hiking, it has performed well. Excellent signal lock, great accuracy.
Cons: Has alleged features that just don't seem to work. Updates have not helped. No street level software. Magellan customer service is just UNREAL. At times, the language barrier makes it impossible to even describe the problem.
Summary: I almost bought this in late 2007, but found out about the problems. After consulting with a retailer I totally trusted, I bought one in May 2008, after they were allegedly "fixed". If Magellan made cars, it's like selling one with only two wheels, additional wheels "to be released", or a computer, but oh yeah, the screen will be released on some future update. I based my purchase on my former Magellan Meridian Platinum model, which excelled at both driving and topo use. The Triton 2000 is OK for topographic work, as long as you spend an extra $100 on software, but then you get NO street software. Street software doesn't exist. There are icons and menus for features that simply aren't there. Saving a waypoint used to be a simple button push, but now you must navigate a menu to save points. When multiple points are desired quickly, this is a hassle. I could go on and on. I assumed, stupidly, that this unit would be an upgraded model of the Platinum that I used for years and found to be excellent. As they claim, this unit is totally new, but also totally UNREADY for market. After several months of disappointment, the unit completely shut down. It won't work at all. Magellan is attempting to fix or replace it. I've never felt so ripped off by a purchase. Customer support is quite the language hurdle. Donwloading updates haven't helped much. Although I am stuck with my Triton, I feel compelled to save others from purchasing any Magellan products. I don't own any of their car-only systems, but their handhelds have gone down the drain. I hear Garmin is the way to go now. I'm so disappointed.
