Cons: If you play graphic intense games this isnt the card for you. Had lockup issues playing Rise of Nations, download latest drivers and it fixed that BUT some graphics still run slow (not my pc P4 2.0 GHz 512 RM). If your a gamer and want TV on your pc look

I must rid this evil from my PCby - May 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Where do i start? I have had noyhing but problems since i purchased ATI all in wonder 8500 dv.1st thing is the card barely gives you room to screw in cable tv and digital sound jack. When i 1st tried to install i had a good friend who has been a PC expert for 15 years help. We couldn't install the drivers after 2 hours, friend gets more info instlls drivers, while trying to use other features constant errors pop up, soon 1st pc crash, friend says card doesn't seem ready to come out since every problem i had others have had, anyway i give it another try but can never get every feature to work, constantly emailing support which doesn't even read your problem they just give you the same 10 or so links,2nd major crash must take to gateway get XP Pro insalled over ME, install card again thankfully XP saves crash and 2 more, finally get it working, but it removes some video settings, now i get the record to work but the TV display shows everything but video of any kind. Trouble shooting tells me to adjust settings that ATI removed. CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE. FRIEND WAS RIGHT WORSE PRODUCT WE'VE SEEN TO DATE. If still interested you will soon find on eBay.

Save yourself from non-stop migrainesby - April 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I put up this review, not so much to warn you about ATI cards, but to prevent ATI from getting more business. I am disgusted. I am a film student, and have enough other forms of stress in my life. I built this computer four months ago for full resolution video editing. It’s an Athlon 2100 with a Radeon AIW 8500DV. That’s pretty much all it is because I’ve taken basically every other piece of hardware out in my attempts to create a stable system. It can handle the full res video, that is until a random hardware conflict pops up causes the thing to crash, usually piquing in a completely spontaneous reboot. I’ve gotten in the habit of saving my work every thirty seconds or so. The only game I’ve had time to play is Grand Theft Auto III. It looks great most of the time, but again, spontaneous crashes and reboots. Same with DVD movies, Real One player, occasionally internet browsing, My Computer windows...you get the point. And when I decide to take a break from my headaches and watch South Park, I open up the TV player and find snow. I have to reboot to get the thing to find its NTSC sync again, but it’ll loose it again before the show’s over and go back to snow, requiring another reboot. Now lets talk about the fan. I hate loud computers They drive me insane. I have put a lot of extra dough into this machine to make it quiet, and the only thing I can’t get to shut up is the fan on my ATI card. It’s so f’n annoying. And, in all my troubleshooting frustrations, I managed to tweak two of the tiny, fragile pins on the break-out-box connector, and had to order a replacement for $45. Come on ATI, ever heard of quality engineering and manufacturing? You can do better than that! Or maybe I’m giving you too much credit again. I was warned about using an ATI card in an AMD system, but I figured ATI was a world-class company capable of making a card that could support the processors that make up arguably half the world’s market. What makes it so hard is that ATI hates its customers. I have sent about three emails to them and heard no response in roughly three months. I would try calling them, but they are the only company I’ve ever seen to not offer an 800 number, or even a straight line. I would pay the long distance fees, but I refuse to pay $2 a minute for their f’n 900 line. Gee, I wonder how long I’ll be on hold for. I was willing to give them a last chance, after the four months of chances I’ve been issuing, but this morning, I got on-line and saw a bunch of reviews with people having the same problems with the same card, as well as others in the ATI line. I will say that it may have something to do with AMD chips, and perhaps Intels will like them better, but I’m done. I’m counting my losses and turning this card into a paper weight. Welcome to my computer Nvidia. Please treat me better.

Good Overall Graphics Cardby - March 6, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought this card due to its versatility. True, it is not the best for hardcore 3D gaming but its features more than make up for it. I highly recommend this card for the multimedia user due to all of its features for a relatively good price online. I have looked at the negative comments about this card and some are valid, especially with the driver issues. However, with the introduction of the Catalyst 3.1 drivers, most if not all of the problems that I am aware of are resolved. ATI has had problems in the past with its driver support but they have improved much better. For the other ridiculous comments about the card, I don't know why you even wasted the time to type your comment. If you are wondering what I am running on my system, here is what I have: Soyo KT400 Ultra Platinum Edition Mobo, AMD 2600+ CPU (333Mhz FSB), 512MB Corsair XMS RAM DDR333 CAS 2, WD 120gb HD w/8mb cache, Win XP Pro w/SP1.

Great card if you have the right systemby - January 17, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought this card a month ago and have been impressed by the features. Watching TV on your PC is great, but it is not a TIVO replacement. It doesn't have the good user interface yet. Also as other people mention the fast forwarding in video playback is very buggy. Though ATI has had a bad history for its drivers and has terrible support. They have gotten better at providing software updates. Hopefully the features will improve and they work out some of the bugs in their fast forward engine with software updates. If bought this card with rebate for 150 and think at this price it is worth it. My system is p4 2400/512Mg 333 DDR.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: The 8500DV has a good TV picture and conveniently captures to MPEG. The TV-on-Demand feature works, but is a little sluggish. The main drawbacks are a poor sound implementation (runs through the sound card's line-in) and a slow 3D video card. DO NOT INSTALL THE NEW DRIVERS until ATI works out their "kinks."

Incredible feature set; no trouble so farby - October 29, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: My new PC came with a GeForce 4 MX400, but I wanted video capture. I had a Rage Fury Pro installed on my old PC, but with only 32 MB of RAM it was too slow and would have been a serious downgrade for the new PC, although I'm not a serious gamer and am much more interested in features and versatility than all-out 3D performance. I tried Dazzle's DVC 150 (USB 2.0) and hated it; returned it within a week. Video capture was weak (NSTC scan lines clearly visible) and the software continually froze up. I was torn between the AIW 7500 and 8500DV and ultimately got the latter for $50 more because of its faster 3D chipset and especially its firewire ports, which I don't need right now but might in the future (since I got my DVD player, I'm now regretting buying a TV in 1997 with no S-Video port; the PC also has no open PCI slots left for a separate firewire card). Aside from its 64MB DDR memory (vs. 32MB SDRAM), additional ports and onboard TV tuner, the 8500DV also improves on the Rage Fury Pro by allowing the TV Out to work without changing the refresh rate and resolution on the PC monitor. I didn't take any chances here, downloading all the latest drivers and software from ATI's website and installing nothing off the CD; it took more time and I may have done it out of sequence (the capture driver had to be installed a second time at one point); it was a little rocky but ultimately I got everything working properly and have had no difficulties as yet. I really like the Multimedia Center software, especially the video desktop feature that puts the TV image in place of the desktop wallpaper when the app window is minimized (very cool). Video and still-frame capture are superb, much better than the Dazzle and marginally better than the Rage Fury Pro. I can't give it a 5 for quality because haven't put the 3D chipset to the test with anything more challenging than Madden 2000 (I don't own many 3D games), but the reviews have seemed positive so I'm sure I won't be disappointed. No experience yet with support; haven't needed it, which I guess is a good thing.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: This card is a nice 3D card, shows tv well, but the recording functions are pretty bad. Pausing live is clumsy and doesn't work right, and the recorder crashes, produces choppy recordings and requires a large CPU such as the 1600XP Athlon. Newest drivers fixed everything! This card is truly wonderous!by - October 2, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Since the last rating, ATI came out with new drivers in September. Once installed correctly by wiping all evidence of previous software and drivers from disk and registries, then loading them in a particular order (DVD (then reboot) 1st, then WDM Capture Driver (no reboot), then Display Driver (then reboot), then control panel driver (reboot), then MMC driver (reboot) then remote updates and new hydravision drivers (reboot) then install Guide Plus+ from the original CD by finding the setup icon manually in explorer and run it. After all that, all functionality is proper. The only reason my support went down to a "3" this time, is because I keep having to email the tech support guys several times before I can actually get answers to ALL my questions but they truly aretrying and working with me which means a lot. Don't give up on ATI because of support! They will help if you try to maintain professionalism with them and keep your questions short because they do not take to lengthy questions like would have hoped! Great work ATI!

Works almost perfectlyby - October 2, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: After reading a number of negative comments, I was hesitant, but I decided to try this card. I downloaded all the latest software (5 or 6 downloads!), and read the release notes carefully, and followed the instructions. The result exceeds my expectations. Every feature works perfectly except playback of captured mpeg, in which, if you fast forward, audio/video get out of sync. I'm using the 7.6 file player. This doesn't happen with the ATI .vcr format, which is fine for most uses. In addition, fastforward of .vcr files is jerky and rewind is twice as fast as ff. Not a big deal, but strange because fast-forward and rewind of TV on Demand is totally smooth. I have reported this to ATI. I have captured hours of video without a single problem, even the recording scheduling in TV Guide works fine. Frankly, I can't believe this product works so well. If you get the latest software, and your hardware meets the requirements, and you follow the release notes, you shouldn't have any trouble, assuming you're not a novice (this product is not simple, just due to what it does). If you have a good PC laying around, or the beginnings of one, you'd be crazy to buy Tivo or Replay TV. I spent $400 and I ended up with a DVD player and a Tivo clone hooked up to my TV.

Review: I had NO problems installing this card. I am using - Windows ME SiS735 based MB (ecs k7s5a) AMD 1500xp 512M ram this video card I downloaded the updates and installed them before I even put the card in the machine. Once the card was in it found most of the stuff but required me to insert the CD. I then ran the updates again (just to be sure) and am able to use ALL the features if this card. I've captured, watched cable stations (guide+ is awesome), played Warcraft 3 out to my tv (and jedi outcast). The card has great features and works awesome. I'm assuming alot of the complaining is from people useing XP or 2000 which are not fully supported yet. Yes, M$ wants you to buy their new OS and spend cash but they never work right. At any rate, buy this card it works great and is packed with features. Ignore the people who complain.

Captures video, works wellby - September 18, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This captures video well, and gives you lots of options for saving as different types of files & quality - av1, mpg1, mpg2, etc. Will capture still images in adition to full motion. The install was easy, and I'm not an expert at installing things. The file player works well, DVD player too, though I don't really use it much. TV tuner works, but I have DirecTV so I can only watch what chanell my Directv reciever is set to. The VCD (video CD) player won't play my video CDs. I have emailed tech support, and only got an automated response reading they'd get back to me, but I have heard nothing. Nobody answers the phone. The Ulead editing software is lousey. I was hoping the card came with a simple editor where you can trim and save without having to produce the whole movie again. If you buy the card, get MGI Videowave 5 software for your editing. I have made MPG1 captures from the ATI card, then edited them in MGI, and burned them to VCD witrh Nero, and they play in my DVD player, though quality is OK at best due to limitations of the VCD format. I really wanted to produce movies and output them to VHS videotape, but unfortunatley have not been able to get that to work... any suggestions?

After decent drivers loaded, this card is awesome!by - September 1, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought it for full retail when it first came out. It had some serious issues because of early drivers on V1.0 CD that came with it. After properly loading the latest drivers available, and updating my bios, it works great and only minor issues remain. I have nearly full functionality and no major problems. I still couldn't get the DVD software to work and still allow my TV on demand and Digital VTR functions to exist while having the DVD player installed so I left it off and I am using WINDVD to playback DVDs. It does not conflict with ATI TV and I can now get 5.1 digital or DTS out of my Soundblaster to my Surround amp when ATI's DVD player would not seem to. I have read other reviews about the service or support over the phone being terrible, I personally have had good results over the phone and also using email. They have however told me on my last call that they are going to a pay per call support structure even for those who's product is still in warranty which is not good and it is the only reason I knocked the support category down from 5 a notch. Also, I am still waiting for a reply to my email from several days ago for further answers to those DVD issues I am still encountering. We'll see if they respond! Here is a rundown of my issues: - With the newest drivers properly loaded, my computer is now stable and does not seem to reboot on its own any more - My Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5700 surround amp does not recognize the AC-3 encoded Dolby Digital 5.1 out of the port on the ATI breakout box (SPDIF output connector to amp's SPDIF Dolby Input) ATI DVD Player does not seem to pass the encoded signal through correctly. Other surround outputs like my home DVD player's SPDIF output and my SONY Playstation SPDIF output to my amp work O.K. indicating a possible ATI AC-3 encoder signal issue. - ATI DVD Player if loaded, makes the ATI TV on Demand and Digital VCR buttons and functions disappear - Ulead Media Studio Pro V6.5 (a somewhat pricey software package for home studio editors) does not recognize your ATI TV tuner video - GUIDE PLUS+ does not seem to be bundled in your newest driver/software downloads. It is missing after reloading all your newest stuff. - The ATI Library program errors and fails to run when trying to open. Subsequently ATI has come out with a fix for this and was emailed to me promptly! - DirectX and Soundcard compatibility tests in ATI's PC Check program are possibly being reported erroneously as compared with WINXP DXDIAG DirectX test program and even after loading the latest DirectX version V8.1b, the results were the same.

Amazing features, worked perfectly out of the box!by - June 21, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Before I got this card, I read a lot of problems that people were having so I made sure to install nothing but the latest drivers. Everything went PERFECTLY, I have had 0 problems with the card or any of the software whatsoever (I'm using XP). If you have windows XP and you install the latest drivers, everything should work great. I can't vouch for different OS's, but if you have all the latest drivers and Windows Media Codecs (required in 2000 and ME), there should be no problems. The card performs wonderfully as well. 3DMark2001SE scores are 8500+ and I'm in the process of converting all my family's video files to CD, the S-Video input yield perfect full screen video! The TV quality is also very high, and the software is very user-friendly. I watched and recorded the lakers three-peat! A lot of you have mentioned that ATI support sucks, and this is probably true (though I have never had to use it!). However, if you go to rage3d.com there is a huge wealth of information on the message boards and virtually every problem has been diagnosed, so the lack of support is not a problem. Overall, please don't shy away from the negative reviews people have put. This card works wonderfully if you take the time to make sure it is installed correctly and with the latest drivers.

All in all a great buy for the moneyby - June 14, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I just got this card on Friday, so far I love it. The TV picture is very clear and smooth, and my Nintendo 64 and PS2 work better on it than I expected through the composite inputs, although I have to keep switching them, but that's what I had to do on my old TV anyway. I have a cable decoder box which is hooked through the VCR, allowing me to actually record television, even timer record as long as I leave the VCR and the decoder box on. I can't use the Gemstar listings because I have a decoder and I have to keep my TV on 4, but I don't mind. My main issues are the length of the input/output box wire, it's only like an inch. They should make it 3 times longer. And if you install the Catalyst drivers from yesterday, install the video capture driver FIRST and don't reboot. Then install the video driver and reboot. Otherwise you get all this unknown device found loop, even on XP. That stumped me for a while until I downloaded the video capture driver and read its release notes, that should be mentioned in the main video driver release notes as well, because typically people are going to install that first. Why I gave a 3 for support.

ATI would not even reply to support requests!!by - June 13, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I sheeled out the moeny for this beast and spent the next two weeks battling the drivers in the XP environment. I wrote ATI a letter requesting assistance (since I could not get through on the phone) and to this date (about six weeks later) I have yet to receive a response. I sent the card back, took a 15% loss on the purchasing price and ordered an ASUS TI4600 Geforce4. This card was up and running within ten minutes. Not one flaw since I put it in. I will have to buy the firewire and tv tuner seperately but I have no choice since ATI is not a viable solution. I would also like to mention that when I initially installed the ATI drivers they screwed up the boot sector on XP. This meant that I had to reinstall the entire operating system (I did not know about XP's recovery ability) This problem is not unique to me. I have read of at least one other 8500DV owner running into the same problem. Now I have to format my computer again since ATI makes no provision to completely remove the cards drivers. Every time I reboot the computer I get a warning window telling me that their card is either missing or not working. Thanks for nothing but a big waste of my life ATI. I hope you go the way of 3DFX. Potential buyers please beware of ATI's garbage. They have released a product that they won't support and they won't even aknowledge it. The problems with this card are pasted all over the net. Save yourself some hassle. NVIDIA all the way.

Firewire Fails in Many Systemsby - June 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The only way I could get this card to work on three PC's was to disable the firewire port - one of the key features that made me buy this card and pay the extra price. ATI's support was poor - basically said that if you can't get a BIOS update from your PC manufacturer you're out of luck. They shouldn't let the buyer figure out which PC's the product will work with. (Dell is a small PC supplier and it didn't work with it's Dimension line)

I LOVE This Cardby - May 30, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I got this card to do video capture from mainly vcr tapes, to convert and burn with a DVD +RW burner and make video CD's with a CD burner. I was concerned about video capture using composite and s-video, even though this card captures from digital camcorders too. I have tried MANY MANY video capture cards (i.e. dazzle DVCII, Snazzi, StudioDV and others). The issue with any video capture is sound sync. The snazzi was good, but poor at producing a VCD mpeg-ready file. It had to be converted and that’s where sound sync nightmares came in. The dazzle was a nightmare off the bat. Sound sync was a problem after a capture of 30mins and longer. And the dazzle often froze the system, wasn’t detected or only worked with directx7.0 (not later versions). And dazzle's support was criminal. The only help was their forum board. But the truth came out there, with soooo many bashing dazzle, that dazzle closed down the board. Moving on... I got this ATI Radeon 8500dv thinking it was too good to be true. I was so pleasantly surprised!!! It was a charm to install & setup, removing old video drivers first! Then I checked ATI's website for driver/software updates. And there were updates for everything, so DO GET THE UPDATES "always first". Doing it right, with the updates, this card does it all. My thing, video capture, was wonderful. The software worked great. It lets you capture VCD ready file, all the way up to a DVD mpeg2 ready file. You do need to download the ATI DVD player from their web and install. That also installs the codes for DVD playback in the windows media player as well as ati's file player. Otherwise, you'll get a decode error. Some really nice things about ATI's 8500dv software is it lets you "pause" during a capture. No need to re-edit your mpeg1, Avi or mpeg2 file to remove commercials or unwanted scenes. Just "pause" it during capture and continue after. You get a file all nice and ready to burn in Nero or other CD burning software. I use Nero and it loves the mpeg files Radeon 8500dv creates. And I captured a full 2-hour vcr taped movie with absolutely NO sound sync errors from start to end, all is perfect. As I said "I LOVE THIS CARD"!!! Drivers are great, software is great and neat, fun, easy to use. Any problems people have, I am sure can be avoided or fixed if they just GET THE LATEST DRIVERS & SOFTWARE easily downloaded from www.ati.com. This card is sooo neat, I'm afraid the movie industry may try to outlaw it, since it does such a great job capturing...! PS..Get the latest drivers/software from ati’s web. Don’t use the CD unless you know it contains the latest. Mine was new and still wasn’t the latest versions. Just do the updates!

Love it (especially for the cost)by - May 16, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Never had any problems with it. Except for some cases with OpenGL. For the cost it can't be matched. The anti-aliasing is fantastic. I've cranked the res. on some of the best new games, and the fps hardly even shifts. Driver support is ATI's downfall however, it's obvious that they should put more effort into the driver support.

Review: After having major problems with my first ATI purchase last year I gave them another chance and purchased this card. Big mistake. Lots of features and lots of bugsby - April 10, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This card pacts a lot into it and has a lot of great features. However this card has many bugs and horrible support. I never found a single solution to any of my problems. That said my Win2K system froze after each capture. In all the products I tried to use with it such as Premiere, VideoStudio, Sonic and others. The only one that seemed to work was the new version of VideoStudio not the one that came with it. So good luck and best wishes to those that try it.

Best full featured card ever!by - April 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I replaced my 3dfx Voodoo 3500TV with the ATI AIW 8500DV. The TV features alone on this card were worth the money. It does appear to require a bit more technical knowledge than average to install this card, but the market for this card should be able to handle it. I downloaded the lastest drivers from website before starting(Windows 2000). Love the Guide+ and RF Remote.

Pricey, but worth every eurocentby - March 29, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This card is expensive, even more in Europe than in the States (50% more to be exact). The ease of installation, the abundance of features and the overall quality compensate for the price ticket. Some drawbacks: not much range for overclocking and no drivers for Windows 98 SE.

The original AIW Radeon is betterby - March 15, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have had nothing but trouble with this card. Can't say for sure where the conflict is--could be the Sound Blaster Card or perhaps soyo Dragon+ motherboard. Have had constant resource conflicts and lockups. W2K had uncertified driver and locked up continuously. XP home and ME had problems. The only OS which I have had some success with is good ole' Win98SE. It is the only OS that I can get everything to work on some. I had the AIW Radeon before, and it worked great. Didn't have firewire but didn't need it. May be slower on 3d, but didn't need it either. Good thing I didn't need Ulead, it is an awful program, no help, no manual, and a stupid interface designed to look cool rather than be functional. I like the TV guide and the digital VCR options better than with the original AIW Radeon. In summary, spend half the money and get an All-in Wonder Radeon. Then spend the savings on Pinnacle Studio 7 with its own firewire card.

Get a Tivo instead!by - March 9, 2002
Pros:

Review: Took me over 20 hours to almost get this thing to work. Tech support is easy to reach as long as you don't mind calling Canada. Unless you absolutely must have the video edititing capabilities, you would be much better off with the linux-based Tivo, which does the same thing without hours of reloading, redownloading, rebooting and reformatting to get the drivers to work.

Best Video Card Available IMHOby - March 6, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I am a computer Professional. This is by far the best Video Card I have used. I have no idea why Starbuck could not get it to work with XP. It preforms flawlessly for me. I scored 7689 on Mad Onion with it. I do time shifting recording through my cable TV hookup. (Just like TIVO- at a fraction of the price!!!) The Video capture works great and it has enough pre-sets to make most people happy....but it also has controls to set up custom quality settings for video capture. I capture 1 Hr. shows in the VCD mode and write them to CD (VCD) (They take up about 630 Meg.) and then watch them on my DVD player that is hooked to my TV. The Ulead Video Editing software is more than adequate for most peoples needs, Although Adobe Premiere is better (at around $600 EXTRA Dollars) I think perhaps if someone does not know how to do Video editing that the Ulead software is MUCH SUPERIOR to most of the other software out there for ease of use. Perhaps other software (and I mean Professional Quality software) should be tested before slamming Ulead for being "The most difficult to use I have ever found." I have used several editing suites (Premiere, cool edit etc.) and I think either of those is much more difficult than the Ulead software. I have checked out the NVidia and also the now defunct 3dfx versions and the difference in quality and capability are astounding.I owned a Radeon AIW 32 Meg card before I bought The ATI AIW Radeon DV8500 My test Scores on Mad Onion more than doubled. I also Love the Breakout cable. With it I can move it out of the way instead of having a faceplate with a mess of wires hanging off of the front of my computer! Anyway I love this card.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: Okay so this card is pricey but you get alot of features for your money. The remote allows me to watch films and surf the web etc on my big TV in the lounge and pause etc. It also means I can choose any of my mp3 collection on the computer using the TV as a large display, and play them through the hi-fi. Game performance hasn't blown me away compared to my previous Radeon card but I have not had the compatibility problems that my old video editing card gave me Pinacle dc10plus

Stay away from ATI Products...by - February 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Purchased this card over a week ago and have had headaches ever since. The product has a great features and they dropped the price to $299 at CompUSA this week so I figured what the hell.. I was upgrading from a Geforce 2MX to the AIW 8500DV. It appeared to work out of the box on my Win XP Pro system. I could watch TV, play games, etc.. But then I tried capturing video, and then the problems started... I upgraded the drivers and still no luck. I never could reach ATI to talk to support.. Let me continue with some additional problems I had. The PVR function is useless, due to capture problems and inaccurate info in GuidePlus. The remote is kinda cool, but the range would only work in the same room, so forget about putting the computer in one room, running the tv-out to another room and then try to use the remote that room. Just wouldn't work. Although the TV out feature worked, most good video cards are now supporting DVI/S-Video out, so that feature is nothing new. So, after many headaches with this card, I took it back for a refund and picked up an ATI TV Wonder VE video card for $19.99... And oh my what problems I am having with this one.. The channels are scrambled using their software. I downloaded two other PVR/TV software packages and could watch TV with no problem. So it appears that ATI is incapable of releasing quality software.. I finely found a fix to watch TV with their software, but it is still a headache.. I also found it interesting that the video capturing with the TV Wonder card works better than the ATI AIW 8500DV. Although my new ATI TV Wonder VE card has problems, it is still worth the $19 compared to $299... And I plan to keep the TV Wonder VE. Bottom Line: Stay away from ATI. If you want a do-it-all card, forget it. Buy the components seperately ( e.g. Geforce4 Video and a TV Capture card, etc... ) One more quick note, if you think you can contact ATI for support, forget it. They are not open on weekends and when they were open, I was working so I couldn't call them. Their documentation and knowledgebase is terrible. The only reliable info I could find on this product to help with my problems was on various message boards from other users, who in turn also had the same problems.. Hopefully, you will notice a pattern here, ATI is incapable of producing a quality product with quality software. And they have no clue what quality support is...

I Love My TVby - February 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Recently I got my hands on this new AIW 8500 DV from ATI to replace my old AIW Radeon. Up until now everything has worked fine, except for some small glitches. But the best thing I like about this card is the remote that come with it and it uses RF. It was so COOL! But I admit that this card is pricey, and as usual ATI's driver needs some work. ATI also changed Radeon 8500's core speed and memory speed, so this card is not as fast as the Radeon 8500 card. But overall this is a pretty good card, if you enjoy watching TV while doing works on your computer.

An excellent card that meets most expectations!by - February 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I've always had a ATI AIW atleast in on of my systems. My first was the AIW PRO, then the AIW Radeon, and now the 8500DV. I've seen the improvements through the changes, and it's good. The quality of the card is top notch. Although it does not officially support Win98SE, I ran the card with all of its features without any problems (tv, capture, dvd, games). On the system the 8500DV is in has a Abit KT7-A, Athlon 1.33 Ghz, with 512 PC133, and I attained a 3dMark2001 score of 6200, very well within acceptable limits for any game so far. The card is relatively stable, but I've seen better stabability with the older Radeon with the current drivers. I tried this card in WinXP, and I find that using uncertified beta drivers provides some risks, and will crash at random while using apps that uses OpenGL and other occasions. My main suggestion is to stay with certified and finalized official drivers. I think it's top notch card, fast, plenty of options and other goodies, good quality video capture that supports just about any codec. All it really needs is to have some better driver support and probably faster customer support responses. For people new at installing stuff, this video card may seem complicated and ppl will get frustrated, but everything does work as advertised. ATI has distributed a cheaper and simpler version of the AIW 8500DV, the AIW 7500 which is cheaper for those who doesn't want to fork over the high dollar amount and only misses a few options (ie Firewire).

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I though the card was pretty cool overall, but when I tried to get software support from ATI, I realized I wasted my money on the card. The guide plus has most of the best channels listed wrong, so I can't use it to record my shows. Guide plus get broken and you can't fix it, it's just dead unless you reload. ATI's knowledge base is very brief. I'll never buy from this brand again I'm so disatisfied.

All-In-Wonder...only for pros!by - February 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I purchased the AIW Radeon PCI Bus 32MB version about three weeks ago ($171). I spent about three hours trying to get the software to run properly. The bundled Media Center and Drivers totally corrupted my DirectX 8.1 drivers. The documentation included is practically useless and the folder names on the install CD make it very difficult to ID what you want to manually install. But once installed it seems to work as advertised. I still get no sound from the digital VCR feature though, I just downloaded the latest drivers and software from ATI's site, so hopefully I will be able to fix the problem. Watching TV from your PC monitor is fine, although the picture sharpness is a little soft. The MP2 recording quality is good, just be sure you have A LOT of disk space. The MP2s at acceptable quality runs at about 1MB/Sec!! I like the ability to turn the desktop wallpaper into a live TV screen. I also think the ability to record actual TV/movie scripts is way cool. It is a feature that takes the Closed Captioning and transcribes the dialogue into a Rich Text Format on your PC. And of course you have the ability to capture screen shots from wahtever you happen to be watching. ATI claims that their software will not record copyright-protected programming (ie DVDs or VHS). I have not tested this claim. Finally the card seems to do fine as a gaming card. I ran Alice (some minor lags at detailed 32bit textures, 800x600) and No One Lives Forever with good results. While it's no GeForce3, it's fine considering that it is supposed to be an "All-In-One" card. If you have the PC skills and patience the card's features and performance will reward your efforts. Just be sure you get the latest drivers and software from ATI. Don't use that crappy setup CD!

Not a real performerby - January 18, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I installed this card in my PC: Intel Pentium 4/1.9, 1gig of rimm 800, Adaptec Scsi ultra 160, turtle beach santa cruze sound, Intel D850MV system board, with 450w power supply. This card does not work with the scsi card--had to disable the firewire on the vid card to get the pc to boot. Installed the software, and the software had nice features--wow. Ran benchmark to see how fast it performed... and on 3dmark2001 --gave score under 2000 points... consistantly. That is lowest I've seen for any GPU in last 2 years. Even did a clean install of WinXP pro to see if that would make a difference. It didnt. As a comparison, my pc originally had nVidia Quadro Pro 2 (which is slower than nVidia geForce 3)which scored over 7000 points on 3dmark test. In a summary: with poor performance, needing to add a additional firewire card (if you use adaptec scsi 160), and the cost--I would not buy this card. You would do better with nVidia Mx2 everthing solution and save yourself about $200. Oh the support at ati... its a long distance call to Canada.

Review: For the above average user, this card is pretty pricey for Video capture capabilities(other features are availble on better applications). Support on weekend stinks! Still can't get TV drivers to work with XP, and the support line is "closed until Monday." Had my first safe mode operation in XP (thank God for the drive revert mode in XP). Features fair. SW Application from ULead is probably the most difficult to use I have ever found. Does not have an intuitive user interface. Would be better not to have a dongle for the multi-purpose connector (three if you include the wireless remote, and the video plug adaptor). Dongle cable connector wiggles and can cause short circuiting. Would have been better to include a face plate mount for one of the drive bays. I would have expected much better from ATI...

Video card of my dreams!!by - January 3, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This is the video card of my dreams. I took out my hauppauge wintv card and creative labs annihilator pro 32mb agp video card and replaced it with this! It was a nice upgrade, and I still have a remote control to channel surf. FInally, ATI fans can use a remote and compete with hauppauge's line of tv video card tuners!

Poor image qualityby - December 26, 2001

Review: Even after replacing the ATI 8500 card with another...I'm still getting shadowy streaks behind text and graphics. It even shows during the boot process. Poor quality image.

Very poor tuner.by - December 25, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Same hookup successful with previous AT AIW cards produced unwatchable image on most cable TV channels. Some juggling of splitters and a 6DB attenuator produced what I would cal a 'fair' image on most channels. MPEG2 video capture is better than previous AIW cards but there are still some dropped frames and loss of image quality. Not quite what I need to archive my Hi8 home movies. Using ATI help site led repeatedly to "unavailable" pages.

Outstanding Video Quality!by - December 7, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This is it! Videophiles, the dream video card has finally been released. The video quality is simply amazing. Apart from a few software glitches (not unexpected), this finally leverages XP new video capabilities. Virtually no frames dropped during MPEG encoding, the competition does not even come close. Congratulations to the ATI team for a great product!!

Manufacturing issues?by - December 2, 2001

Review: I plugged this in, and a capacitor blew up! Tells me that ATi does not burn in their product nor test them adequately before shipping them.
