  • "Worst hardware purchase I've ever made!"

    Pros: Hmm...can't think of any

Cons: Everything, especially Doom 3 performance

Summary: First off, I will list my specs, and I just formatted, installed my chipset drivers and video card drivers.

    Athlon 64 3200+
    Asus K8V Deluxe
    1GB Kingston HyperX PC3200 RAM
    Radeon X800 Pro

    3DMark05: 5173

By my specs and my 3Dmark05 score, you would think I would have an awesome system, ready to take on any game you throw at it. THINK AGAIN! Because of the X800 Pro, not only is Doom 3 virtually unplayable, but other games such as UT2004 and Far Cry lag to hell as well. Doom 3 is by far the worst, and that just happens to be the game that will set the pace for the future and also my favorite first person shooter.

In Doom 3 I get framerates of about 30 fps average, dipping into the teens and single digits in various places. My settings are High, 1024x768, 2xAA. I frequently see framerate in the teens in other games such as Far Cry, UT2004, and Painkiller.

The X800 Pro is purely a fraud and a scam. You expect to get a high end card, but instead get a card that doesn't do much better than a value card. I've reformatted many times to make sure it wasn't a software issue. And friends I know who have had the X800 pro say they had the same problem, but then RMAed the Pro and got a 6800 GT.

DO NOT GET THIS CARD, even the $200 6600GT is heaps better, and the 6800 GT from Nvidia is so far ahead of this its unbelievable. Despite what ATI wants you to think, the X800 Pro is NOT a true gaming card. It will leave you banging your head against your desk because of crap framerates and the regret for wasting your money.

I don't have the money for a 6800GT or I would have gotten rid of this hunk of crap months ago. Everybody I know with the X800 Pro got rid of it and got the competing 6800 GT. They have nothing but good to say about the 6800 GT, and always brag about how much faster it is than the X800 Pro.

If I had to rate the X800 Pro, I would give it a 1 star out of 5, and tell people not to walk, but RUN from this card. It is the worst hardware purchase I've ever made.

I will end with this. I am NEVER going to buy another ATI product.

    Updated
Well I upgraded to a 6800 GT and that thing is one smoking beast straight out of the box, no special configuration required. I get similar framerates on 1280x1024 as I did at 1024x768 with my X800 Pro. Its unbelievable how much faster the 6800 GT is out of the box. Im fixing to get an NV Silencer 5 and am going to OC it!

Yeah well regardless of what your problem is, its not the ATI card, your saying how its a scam and a fraud but that just makes you sounds stupid. Do you honestly think that ATI would try and scam their customers? No major company would do that. ATI is a great company, and this card will beat the crap out of a 6600 gt, I don't know what your smoking but your review certainly isn't accurate.

Dude, your specs are out of proportion to the card. I think the reason y the 6600 works better is because it is a mainstream card, and your specs are of a mainstream pc.<br>Another problem you might have is that you might have had problems with installation. Check your motherboard as well; this version of the X800 might not be compatible with your motherboard.

Beedubaya, sorry to hear your disappointed with your X800. The fact here is that your not using it right. Even from your post, I could probably diagnose and probably double your framerates, but then you wouldn't be learning anything right?
