    "BEWARE! takes over audio drivers"

by tifacola on February 8, 2008

Pros: really fast for the price, doesn't require huge power supply

Cons: driver support, lose all other audio on system

Summary: I've had one other bad experience in the past with an ATI card but the salesperson assured me they have gotten better about their support. I bought this card over a NVIDIA because I was having a hard time finding a worth-while card for 300watts power supply or less. I kept on having sales people suggest this particular card just about everywhere I went and I have the new 24" widescreen LCD with HDMI input so I wanted to try it out. The installation was horrific in vista since vista doesn?t give you an option to stop the automatic hardware install. After about 7 hours I finally got the right driver installed and the download that I got from ATI was loaded with junk software like something called STEAM? I had to uninstall that program after and do a registry repair. My computer was just a mess.

The graphics were performing really well, I don't do much but run graphic design programs and play movies on my 50" plasma from my computer. But all of a sudden I realize I had no sound coming out of my High definition surround sound system! I tried over and over to uninstall the driver ATI provides to run sound through the HDMI and install my sound card's driver to no avail. My soundcard had virtually disappeared. I even went to the lengths of reinstalling the OS hoping Vista would find the right driver for the sound card. Such was not the case. That next day I was back at the store after 2 weeks of difficulty exchanging the card for a NVIDIA geForce 8600GT which BTW is a dream, and it doesn?t require more than 300watt power supply.

Bottom line: If you want sound coming from anything other than where you're wiring the HDMI cable. DO NOT buy this card. Feel free to search engine "HD2400pro sound driver" and you'll see it's been a problem for TONS of people.
