"Consistent Data Loss; Toshiba in Denial (at best)!!" on by esteedman
Pros: Great concept: WiFi, VGA, USB, CF & SD Card Slots
Cons: Routinely loses data, therefore totally unreliable
Summary: This is a case of a great idea gone bad, and after investing +/- $1,000 (with accessories) I'm really unhappy and frankly, offended.
When the e740 is up and running it is a good machine. Unfortunately, this model has a systemic problem of losing data when the battery runs down (it seems that there is no internal battery to maintain memory), and the battery consistently runs down even when the unit is initially fully charged, is "off", and not used whatsoever after a day or so (at best). Since this condition renders the e740 patently unreliable, it is simply a truly worthless device unless, of course, one wants to walk around with connected power all the time (perhaps defeating the purpose, one might suggest).
There was a recall of early models for this very problem (I had one) and even after returning that unit to Toshiba twice, and then even allowing them to swap it out for a "refurbished" unit, the e740 still does exactly the same thing. Toshiba at this point hangs up on me now, and is either in denial or is "conveniently ignoring" the issue at the expense of the unfortunate buyer. Or, maybe I'm just EXTREMELY unlucky.
Last Toshiba anything for me, friends. Oh, by the way, I'm suing them over this as it is so bad, and worse, their attitude toward doing the right thing, so clearly outrageous. -
"Pretty good PDA, even by todays standards" on by bobmac888
Pros: Nice(ish) display, wifi, dual expansion, fairly stable, slim
Cons: wifi drains battery, will not activesync sometimes

"An okay handheld" on by bestkid92
Pros: Bright screen, integrated wifi, integrated compact flash and secure digital slots
Cons: Freezes an average of 1 to 2 times per day resulting in data loss if data not backed up (requires memory card), warranty not very long
Summary: This is overall an okay device. I used mine for about 2 years. I thought it was great- It managed my schedule and I could put in all my homework assignments for the day. However, it tends to freeze quite often, resulting in data loss if you haven't backed up your files. Toggling of the memory switch or allowing the battery to die can also cause loss of data. The WiFi range was pretty bad, sitting about 7 to 10 feet from my 802.11g router I got a 69% signal. Overall, I would suggest going for a Dell Axim as they are more reliable products.

"Good Features LOUSY Reliability" on
Pros: Wifi, CF slot, VGA out.
Cons: Freezes all the time with wifi on. No PPC 2003 upgrade. Says battery is dead even after charging. NO SUPPORT AT ALL. FREEZES ALL THE TIME!!

"Good products, but Toshiba offers NO SUPPORT OR UPDATES" on
Pros: Solid, good product Now includes wifi etc.
Cons: Toshiba WILL forget about the last line of products. The e800 series is out now, so don't expect ANY support from Toshiba. They're the worst company I've seen for support, too bad their products are pretty good.
