Hands-on with Sprint's new LG Lotus

Sprint and LG have just announced the LG Lotus, a messaging phone with a foldout QWERTY keyboard. The Lotus is the official moniker for the rumored LG LX600, which we mentioned on Crave a few weeks ago. It's one of the first Sprint devices to offer One Click, a customizable user interface that lets you organize up to eight shortcut tiles right on the landing screen.

The LG Lotus will have EV-DO support, which means it has access to Sprint's broadband and entertainment services such as Sprint TV, the Sprint Music Store, and a host of other streaming applications like Sprint Radio. Other features include a 2-megapixel camera and camcorder, a music player (with external controls), a microSD card slot that supports up to 12GB of additional storage, Sprint Navigation, stereo Bluetooth, SMS voice and text messaging, plus the usual productivity tools and e-mail support. The Lotus also supports a background music mode that lets you listen to music while doing other things like texting or surfing the Web.

But the most interesting aspect of the Lotus is unquestionably its design. Its square and chubby shape first gave us pause, but once I saw it in person, I was surprised by how chic it looked. Sprint says the Lotus is the recipient of a Red Dot Design Award for its unique design, and it shows. Measuring 3.3 inches wide by 2.4 inches tall by 0.7 inch thick, the Lotus weighs around 3.7 ounces, and comes in both satin black and textured purple. The textured purple version has embossed flowers and flourishes on the front surface, and is meant to target the female audience. I'll admit that I did like the texture, though I'm still not so sure about the color.

I was also impressed by the display on the LG Lotus. The external display measures 2.1 inches diagonally and supports up to 65,000 colors, but the internal display measures about 2.4 inches diagonally and supports up to 262,000 colors. The wide display makes it quite conducive to watching Sprint TV and is a nice showcase for the aforementioned One Click user interface.

Of course, the star of the show is its QWERTY keyboard. Bearing in mind that I only had a few minutes to play with the device, I rather like it. The bubble-like raised keys feel really nice and tactile, and we can see how this would be a great device for those who like to thumb-type messages. I dare say the keyboard is even better than the Blitz's, but of course I'll have to have it for more testing to really put it through its paces. All in all, I had a positive experience with the Lotus, and look forward to reviewing it.

The LG Lotus is said to debut in October and will cost around $149 with a two-year service agreement.

The following product mentioned is available.

I am really, really liking the overall vibe of this phone - it's just my style. I love that it's a flip, and has the QWERTY - don't like all these sliders that usually house keyboards. What really blows (for me) is that this phone will never come to Verizon (where I am currently in the midst of a 2-yr deal)! If Verizon's Blitz is supposed to be comparable....I'm not thrilled. Yes, I can attest that Verizon's service really is reliable, but their phones are, by and large, a big bore. Sniff, sniff...

I, too, am on the Verizon network and I must say that I have to agree with everything you said. I like flip phones and QWERTY keyboards, but never have I seen them put together in a fashion such as this. I've only owned LG cell phones up to this point, and I have to say: this one is really impressive. I love it.

I'm glad to see this comes in black too. Looks like a really cool phone, and my contract with sprint is almost up, so i can even get it cheap.

I just got the purple LG Lotus yesterday and I love it. I liked it from the minute I saw it but I was not sure I wanted to get one. I never had a LG cell phone before so I was leary of the quality of their products.
WOW! I am so glad I decided to get it. It is so easy to use, and it does so much, plus it is very stylish.
Also for anyone who has never texted on a QWERTY keyboard and is wondering if it is difficult let me just say, I was shocked at how easy it is and really how much it is. I also have larger hands and fingers and I was afraid I would hit every button except the one I wanted - Not the case. I have no problems using the QWERTY keyboard; in fact I wonder how I got along for so long without one.

If your thinking about getting this phone I say go for it. Hey, you get 30 days for a return right so you might as well go for it!

My wife and I just picked up two of these, she got the purple and I got the black. They are fantastic. She traded in a Samsung Ace (A900) and I traded in a Sanyo Katana (6600). I really liked the Katana and wasn't quite ready to look for a new phone, but her Ace was near worthless (battery didn't hold a charge, front screen had lines in it, etc.) and our 2 years were done to qualify for the upgrade discount.

I highly recommend the LG Lotus though after having it for 24+ hrs. The full keyboard is great, the speaker is good, calls are clear, and the menu is intuitive. It seemed a little strange to have a square phone at first, but I'm already use to it. I've always carried my phones in my front pocket and the slightly wider phone still fits fine compared to a traditional style like the Katana. We were considering Blackberries or touch phones like the Instinct, but this one has all the features we were looking for in a flip style. We can check our e-mail (Gmail and Yahoo) readily too. The battery seems good so far, it's only been a day and I played with it quite a bit - it only lost one bar of three by tonight and I usually charge every night or every other night. If you're the least bit curious about this phone or are in the market for a new one - check it out.

Forgot to mention the screen is awesome, it's like a widescreen on a cell phone! I'll be interested to see how Cnet's full review goes for this phone too.

Thanks for the reviewt! I have the Katana as well and upgraded to the Samsung Rant. Big mistake for a person who "pocket stuffs" their cell phone. The buttons on the front face push down when you have it in your pocket. I am turning it back in for the Lotus!! Thanks again for posting your comments. It helped me solidify my decision. :-)

I just purchased a LG Lotus in purple...I actually wanted this phone so badly that I paid the full price for it and I have to say that even paying the full price was worth the pain...This phone is amazing!!! I have to say that I enjoy all the features and they are so easy to use...and I LOVE the keyboard. If you have the chance to get this phone, it's well worth the price. It gets fantastic service even in podunk areas, the music player has wonderful sound. It's just an all around great phone. Get one...what have you got to lose...you've got 30 days to return or exchange it for something else if you don't like it.

At first I thought this phone was funny looking and didn't stand a chance, but then I read up on it and took a trip to the sprint store and fell in love with it. I previously owned the Samsung Instict and in my opinion switching to the Lotus is was a better choice, the instinc is a cool music phone but the Lotus has a lot more features and I love having a flip phone, i started to get tired of the touch screen and the freezing etc; I love the Lotus everything about it is cool the color, design, features and music player are amazing!! Honestly if you are thinking about getting this phone do yourself a favor and get it i promise you wont regret it!!

Got the LG..first loved it, now the love affiar is over. Phone is slow to respond making texting difficult. Also camera is terrible. As a mom, most of my photos are of my kids who never sit still. This camera will not even show most pics, just question marks b/c of all the movement. Ones it does show are a blur. Love the keypad, but why have a camera phone and picturemail if can't take pics? Taking back today.

i have the new phone and i think it's ok EXCEPT you cannot delete text history. you can delete the conversations but when you go to "send Messge>text message" you will see all the numbers you have sent messages to and/or received messages from. HUGE FLAW..you can delete call history but not text history? i had to do a hard reset to clear out text message numbers. sprint said they numbers eventually fall off after 100 different text numbers!!!! i am getting a new phone. the design is great and its pretty but...

I bought this Phone the beginning of Feb. and now have serious problems. The screen won't show up, if it does its distortated, or the colors are off. You can't read the text its all sideways and the outer sreen is blank! Thinking this was a problem ONLY myself was having I asked my brother which purchesed his phone a few days before mine, he too is having problems....red lines showing up and the screen is going blank too. Then I spoke with a friend who has had hers for about 3 months and she says hers is slow to pull up and black for a few sec. then comes on....THIS is how it starts!!!!!! I have researched....this is a common problem. I LOVED the phone WHEN IT WORKED.....NOW I am so mad, I will be speaking with my provider on Saturday over it!
