"WARNING-All WD my books have been having power up probs"
Pros: Small and easy to operate (when it was working)
Cons: Simply dont buy any WD external hardrive.. They have known problems and a very high failure rate. Maybe cnet can run a poll?
Summary: Have just called WD as my 1 t mybook has suddenly stopped working. no power at all. They said to return to my place of purchase and see what can be done. I asked about the data and they told me to call a data recovery place here in Sydney. Having just spoken to them they said this is a very common problem. They have had up to 30 wd mybooks in one month! In good faith I purchased this product... I have all my tax info stored on this, agreements, company logo's, spreadsheets and much more. Now I have only one option... pay up to $1000.00AUD to have my data recovered. Just avoid this product at all cost or like me... live to regret it.

All have problems powering up? How come mine powers up? How come my other 3 mybooks power up? The blanket statements don't do anybody any good.

I have a 500g that died as well. I was told by a tech who looked at it that it was a fail safe built in to protect the data. If the mechanical fails the drive will shut down and you can not retrieve your data. So now I have to send it out for Data recovery, read big $$$$.

I would just buy another one and swap the drives to recover the data! Send the box that does not power up with the new (blank) drives in for warranty repair. There is no reason to suspect the data is corrupt just because the unit won't power up.
If you really need mission critical storage, be prepared to spend 10 to 30 times as much as this unit sells for just for the bare drives. It's all a mater of tradeoffs. Regular backups are still needed to protect data. By the way, the drives in my home system cost me over $3.00/GB for a redundant raid configuration with high-end SCSI enterprise drives. I just got tired of cheap drives failing. I think Western Digital makes the best economy drives around. It's unfortunate this product has earned poor reviews. I suspect the problem is due to the electronics in the enclosure or a crappy wall-wort and not the drives.
