Headphones with iPod controls

With Apple thoroughly touting the headphone remote capability of its various iPods, third-party headphone manufacturers are eagerly turning out products with integrated playback controls. One solution we've seen is the in-line remote cable attachment that can connect to any set of headphones, thereby letting you simply update your favorite pair. Of course, if you need to upgrade from Apple's stock earbuds anyway, picking up a brand-new model with the controls (and mic, if applicable) built in makes more sense. The selection is constantly expanding, but not all the options provide a great experience. We've rounded up some of our favorites in terms of sound quality and fit, plus one supercheap model for those on a tight budget.

The Bottom Line The Zagg Z.buds with mic offer a rugged design and plenty of bass for iPod owners who are looking for earphones with built-in playback controls. The V-Moda Remix Remote earphones are a solid option for style-conscious iPhone and iPod users who prefer tons of bass and useful features. The Klipsch Image S4i earphones offer up sound quality on par with and better than sets that cost many times as much, and they include compelling extras for iPhone and iPod users. The Diddybeats earphones offer a great balance of style, durability, features, and sound quality, making them a good option for anyone looking for nice in-ear headphones with some character. The V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones look good, feel durable, and offer plenty of desirable extras, but the clubby leaning to the sound space does not lend itself well to all genres of music. This set is best suited to DJs and dance music aficionados. The Klipsch Image X10i headphones are a great option for iPhone and iPod owners who listen mainly to lossless audio.

how about the Beats headphones? I met someone last week who had a pair with controls and a mic on the chord, so it works with an iPhone, but it's the full size headphones. Are they too "clubby" sounding as well?
