"Good quality earbuds.... If earbuds are your thing." on by drewsblues
Pros: Remarkable sound isolation, good sound quality, durable case included, rugged, lots of optional buds for best fit.
Cons: Remarkable sound isolation (see below), case is clumsy to use, "white" noise when inactive, relatively difficult to insert and remove, pricey.
Summary: There is no arguing that, once you get the right fitting earbuds and figure out how to get them in your ears, these things sound great. Clarity, balance, and decent bass in an ultra-portable package. Additionally, their noise isolation competes with my wife's Bose Quiet Comfort 2s, without the need for an extra battery. They come with a nice, compact case that -- while a little difficult to quickly wind up and zip closed -- is a nice touch. These rugged earbuds are perfect for use with an iPod or other portable device.
Having said that, I assume that -- if you're considering purchasing these -- you're more interested in the cons than the pros. Especially if you're going to shell out $200 or so for them.
The noise isolation is so good (your ears are sealed so tightly) that i found them a bit uncomfortable at any more than low volumes. Additionally, a microphonic effect occurs when the cord rubs against anything. For instance, you can hear the sound of the chord moving against your shirt in the mix with your music. They can also be a bit claustrophic if you're not 100% comfortable with earbuds. That's how good the fit is when you finally get the right earpieces on these things (and it takes some trial and error).
Additionally, when you plug them in, you can hear "white" noise -- a low-level hiss. This isn't a big deal when you're on the go, but if you use them while sitting at a desk or in a quiet environment, it's noticeable.
Speaking of sitting at a desk: If you're in an environment where you have to remove and reinsert them a great deal (answering a phone a lot, dealing with "visitors") you might be happier with a different set of earbuds or, perhaps, traditional headphones. These take some practice to insert correctly, and they're not the easiest things to remove and reinsert repeatedly (I use traditional headphones at the office).
Having said all that, do I think they were worth the money? Not really. Not *my* money, anyway. For me, I'd have been better served spending the same money on a traditional set of "cans."
It really boils down to preference, I think. If you really like earbuds, or are constantly on the move and need a rugged, compact headset, these will make you very happy.
As I said, the sound is great, and they work wonders with an iPod. I've compared them to a few Sony models and these win the sound category, hands down.
I would recommend them, but only to someone who has their heart set on earbuds. For less money, you can get better sound from a set of headphones. But, to be fair, it's like comparing apples and... crabapples? -
"Sound great, could be sturdier" on by johnheehaw
Pros: Great sound, comfortable
Cons: Same part has broken on two diff pairs of mine
Summary: Love the sound. Best headphones I've heard and I find them the best fit for me (w/ yellow foam sleeves). I just sent back my second pair however due to a piece breaking off. The sleeve attaches to a plastic tube connected to a disc that attaches to the body of the headphone - the whole piece is shaped like a funnel when the sleeve is off. This piece has broken twice where it attaches to the body. I don't put much force on it and only would do so when replacing the foam (i.e. part of normal periodic use/maintenance). The first time I sent it to Shure they replaced it with a new set for $55 (since it was out of warranty). Now the same thing has happened again and I requested a set of E4c (this costs $100 instead of the $55) since their tech support says they don't get as many service requests for this problem (of course, this could also reflect the fact that they don't sell as many E4c's). Shure is very helpful and I've enjoyed the headphones... just disappointed in this one aspect.

"Simply Amazing" on by backtofront001
Pros: Very Nice Sound
Cons: A little effort required to find the best fit
Summary: I never really write a review for a product I own but before buying I definitely like to read reviews. This time around though I am not going to be selfish and review the E3c's.
Simply put, these headphones are amazing; they are the best headphones I have ever owned. The sound clarity and accuracy is beautiful. Another thing that is good about these buds is that when listening to music, you cannot hear anything at all. Without any exaggeration, I was sitting in my sisters room as I was testing the buds. I told her to turn her computer speakers all the way and I could not hear anything. The only thing indicating that her music was on were the nasty vibrations, I could feel (Not hear -- feel) on the ground, made by the subwoofer. With the best fit these earbuds have pretty good bass; you can hear everything from punchy bass drum notes to the lows of a bass guitar. I listen to hip-hop, a lot of rock (every kind except for punk).
The only thing that could potentially be a con is that these earbuds will only sound good if you have a good seal (good fit). Personally, that is not a problem at all with me. When I got the buds I invested half-an-hour to seeing what size fits me best and it turned out that the foam sleeves are the best for me. Now I can pop the buds in just like normal ear buds and I don't even notice what other people describe as a painful experience of inserting the buds.
Final Verdict: Get these earbuds if you are interested in excellent sound quality and don't mind about an initial half-an-hour to achieve it. Do not get these buds if you just want massive, ear destroying levels of bass that you can find in cheap sony headphones. -
"Unbelievable sound, but patience is a must." on by gscottyc
Pros: Amazing clarity; ultra sharp highs, mids and BASS; thick, tangle free cord
Cons: Takes time to find the right sleeve.
Summary: I got these to upgrade from moderately priced Sony MDR-EX71SL earbuds. Key recommendation: take the time to try each pair of sleeves that come with the package. My best guess was dead wrong and I started to worry. The sound was tinny and disappointing. I went through every type and size. Once I hit the right one...BAM. Amazing bass, super mids and highs. I am finding things in old mp3's that I have never heard before. You will be amazed at the difference. It hurts to pay a little more but quality of the sound makes it worth it.

"Worth the $ . . ." on by alifesaver3
Pros: Durable wires, good sound . . .
Cons: Hard to put on at times, stiff wires (double edge sword) . . .
Summary: I read a few reviews on here before I bought them and I was a little hesitant. I think that those who were complaining did not have the ear buds on properly. I had to put them on a few times before I mastered the art. Once I did, however, they haven't fallen out (as others reported) and you can hear the bass (granted, it's not super loud but it's sufficient).
I can honestly say that it was $ well spent. Before these ear buds, I had a pair Sony headphones (that fell apart after 3 months) and they sound like pure garbage in comparison to the Shure E3c's. Also, the 2 year warranty is hard to beat!
Even though I rate this product an 8 (simply b/c the bass can be improved upon and they could be a lil' easier to put in), I still RECOMMEND THEM!
