I am an audiophile, so I want to say upfront: these are decent cans. They aren't spectacular, but they get the job done. I picked them up with a discount from Best Buy for $8.00...so I am pleased. They match up spec-wise with several brands costing 3x and 4x as much. They are light weight, and the sound is crystal clear. I do not feel that there is lots of bass or treble boost going on (which is good in the long run...I want to continue to hear well in my old age), but realize that some of you young whipper-snappers are into that madness. If that is your bag, don't buy these. These have a very natural sound. The durability feels on par with other cans in this price range and higher...perhaps a little better than a few I tried.
Let's see...the cord is kinda short-ish, so I think it is ideal for a phone...I see lots of folks dishing cans for having too much cord...this would be a bonus for the MDR ZX100's. Plenty of padding...oh yea, these sit on the ears, and do not cover them...don't expect total isolation. In retrospect, your ears aren't going to sweat from long-term usage. Another bonus. I find them to be just right...not too tight, not too loose. I could easily wear them and, while not totally forgetting they are on, still be functional to do other things.
My other cans are Koss Pro 4AA's, and Shure 840's. Neither of which would I use for standard music listening. I use them strictly for studio purposes. So, no these aren't in the ballpark with them, but remember, that wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison.
I can't stand in-ear earphones, and think they do more damage to your ears in the long run. If you are looking for a good, light pair of cans to listen to your iphone, ipad, android, walkman, whatever...these will do the trick.
