The good: The Thinksound Rain 9mm headphones feature an environmentally friendly design, right down to their packaging. The earpieces are very compact and should offer most people a comfortable fit. They produce music that sounds natural and very clean.

The bad: The Thinksound Rain earphones may not fit people with larger ears, their mid levels can be a bit overly forward at times, and their low-end is lacking.

The bottom line: The Thinksound Rain 9mm headphones offer clean, open sound, but their bass response isn't up to snuff for many genres of music. These 'buds are best-suited for lovers of classical, oldies, and folk music.

Review:

Portable electronics aren't known for being particularly environmentally-friendly, mainly because of the materials that go into making them and how difficult it is to dispose of them. Headphones certainly don't seem low-impact with their long plastic cords and metal, plastic, and silicone components. However, Thinksound is aiming to change all that with two new lines of earphones designed with the smallest eco-footprint possible. One of the models is the Rain 9mm Headphones, a $100 set that sells for closer to $60 online.

Like other "natural" earbuds we've seen, such as the Ear Pollution Timbre and the Woodees, the Rain headphones feature earpieces that are constructed of wood. You can choose from two finishes, a lighter silver-cherry model and a richer black-chocolate model. In keeping with its mantra, Thinksound receives the wood from easily renewable sources. In addition, the company even uses recycled material for the headphones packaging and the cable, which measures 50 inches long, is PVC-free. Of course, the included pouch is also biodegradable cotton.

Another nice feature of the Rain 9mm headphones is that the earpieces are quite compact, though they are longer and more tapered than those of their sibling, the Thunder 10mm headphones. To help with ear fit, Thinksound includes four sizes of silicone ear tips, which amount to XS, S, M, and L size. The downside for some people is that the large sleeves may not be quite large enough, but the earphones are a great choice for people with small ears. We were able to achieve a fair seal with the small tips and found the earbuds comfortable for a couple of hours, but not all day. The cable seems rather thin, but it's flexible, and the gold-plated straight-plug is surrounded by a thick housing for reinforcement. The cable's attachment at the earpieces seems fragile, and the cord is definitely not tangle-resistant.

"Outstanding headphones, outstanding company" By dwachter00

Pros: SOUND (see below).
COMPANY is incredibly responsive to customer concerns and backs their product beyond the retailer's warranty.

Cons: My first pair had an issue with the wire connection breaking down after nearly a year. HOWEVER, the company was unbelievably responsive, and had a new pair out to me within 3 days of receiving my original pair.

Summary: Amazing 3-dimensional, clean sound. Vocals, acoustic guitar and percussion come through with precise definition and rich tones. Can't speak to the reviewer's complaints about bass - I don't like booming bass channeled directly into my head. I suppose if you like boomy boomy bass you can buy ... Expand full review

"They are 5 star phones even for twice their price." By route2

Pros: They are definately NOT bass anemic, bass is present and of very good quality. Treble is NOT overemphasized, like this cnet review might cause you to believe. Rain are laid back and have no harshness or sibilance. Mids are phenomenal, silky smooth.

Cons: Sound isolation is modest, these might leak more sound in and out than some other similar in ear phones. But it also what allows Rain to have their special sound.

Summary: These headphones really stand out in their price range. Very resolving, very balanced sound across the entire range.
Really, I wonder what is the deal with this cnet review, it does not seem to be qualified or even as much as reality based to me.
