    "Started Great. Now...not so much"

by kubasic on February 9, 2006

    Pros: Sound quality

    Cons: Design, durability

Summary: Here's the skinny on these. They are indeed well made for sound quality and passive noise cancelling. In these respects, these are great. However, my biggest gripe with these is the design. They are not easy to insert in your ear and get the perfect seal. Also, if you intend to use these while wearing any type of hat or garment that covers the ear...forget it. This will drive the bud into your ear and make things VERY uncomfortable. Additionally, my pair have started to fray at the top of the ear piece the flexes around the back of the ear, exposing the internal wiring. So, in this respect, these are not very durable.

So, my final recommendation on these is to treat them very gently and don't plan on wearing them outdoors in cold weather. Let's not forget that these are quite expensive and one would expect more from them.

I totally agree with the statement about the wire. Mine from a few years back had started to crack and fray, but then, at least the SF3s have the replaceable cable, so in a way this is forgivable.

if you still have them, or to someone who reads this, there is a secret way to wearing these that I feel is much better. basically, switch the wires around, and put the L bud in the R ear and vice versa (but remember the cords are switched so the channels are still correct) so now the IEMs should be bending in and toward the back, instead of forward and to the sides. I much prefer this method because I can get a better seal, and can wear head wear that covers the ear (and can put my head on a pillow for short periods of time)

Hi. My cord (as many do) wore out. I called Ultimate's customer service and they sent me a new one free of charge as these earphones have a 2 year warranty. Nice.

You can replace the cord for about $10 just read the manual. The earbuds themselves can disconnect from it for replacing.
