    "Best BOOM! for the buck!!!"

by DarkHawke on August 14, 2007

Pros: Explosive bass; snug & secure fit; sleek, stylish looks; truly small!

Cons: Y-cord arrangement doesn't let you take them off yet have them ready to put back on; not as sound-isolating as I'd like; takes some EQ twiddling to get the best sound.

Summary: The bass on these puppies is almost literally explosive! Suddenly all your bass-heavy music comes alive as never before! Even voices on podcasts have more punch and authority. Anyone who's lamented ear-bud headphones as not having enough bass response needs to get a pair of these pronto, Tonto! The style of them is almost as good. The buds themselves have an almost jewelry look to them, and my, they are teeny! The whole magilla has to be the smallest set of ear-bud headphones I've ever had, and I've had plenty! It comes with lotsa silicone fittings, both in black and translucent white, so there's a size for everyone, and they fit in tight enough that there's a small but audible pop when you take them out!

For all the good, there is some bad. The sound profile is by no means flat, perhaps a cost of delivering such dynamic bass. It took a fair bit of twiddling the EQ settings on my DAP to get the best sound. Once there, though, the sound was better than anything I've yet tried. While the buds do fit tightly, they're not as sound-isolating as the main review lead me to believe. Better than the Sonys I've used before, but the loud talkers on the bus come through fairly clear, requiring a shift to rock music to thoroughly drown them out. And coming from the Sony world, I miss their unique "U" wire configuration, where the wire for the right bud actually loops around your neck, thus allowing the buds to hang from your neck when you pop them out to, say, talk to a friend or a clerk at a shop. With the Y configuration, I have to find someplace to hang them, which is a bit of a nuisance.

None of the above should dissuade anyone from picking them up, though. These are BY FAR the best value in headphones. If you're as hard on headphones as I am, you don't wanna shell out 300 bones for the top-of-the-heap babies, so get the V-moda Vibes instead! It's remarkable that such a young company that self-describes their products as "high-tech fashion accessories" could put together such a great set of 'phones!
