In the world of cell phone headsets, many users stay with the simple earbud models that come with their phone. While this may save you some bucks, you're usually stuck with poor sound quality. Fortunately, there are alternatives, and while Bluetooth headsets claim a monopoly on cool, they needn't get all the glory. Offering an outstanding mix of comfort, style, and performance, the Aliph Jawbone is far superior to competing wired models. As this is no ordinary headset, you'll pay a premium. That said, for $145, you do get what you pay for. As of press time, the Jawbone works only with Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and Nokia handsets, but compatibility for more mobiles is in the works.

The Jawbone has a striking design--in fact, it recently was featured in an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The basic form factor consists of two rectangles connected to the phone jack and each other by a thick wire. The first rectangle holds the ear loop, the earpiece, the microphones, and the voice-activity sensor (see below). Measuring 2 by 0.7 inches and outfitted in sleek silver, it has a highly flexible ear loop that swivels effortlessly for use on both ears and a smooth earpiece that protrudes only slightly into the ear. The overall result was an extremely comfortable fit, and the Jawbone slides on and off with ease.

The second rectangle holds the belt clip and the user-friendly control buttons. Slightly larger at 2 by 0.8 inches, it's styled in the same silver and has a ring-shaped light that glows green when the headset is activated and red when a call is on mute. A power switch turns the headset on and off, and an action button mutes calls on Motorola phones and answers and ends calls on Sony Ericsson and Nokia handsets. We had small complaints with the cord and the phone jack, however. While the cord is exceptionally strong, it's stiff and difficult to wrap up for traveling (a small bag is included). It was also quite long, which made the overall setup a bit cumbersome when on the go. Also, the fit of the phone plug was loose. We had to check it a couple of times while on a call to make sure it was secure.

While we like the style, the Jawbone's real attraction is its excellent sound quality. Using an adaptive sound technology developed at Lawrence Livermore Labs, the headset incorporates two microphones and a unique voice-activity sensor. When placed against the cheek, the sensor actually detects the vibrations produced by speech, rather than picking up the sound from your mouth. When we tested the Jawbone using a Motorola V600, the effect was immediately noticeable. Callers said we sounded crystal clear, and we heard similar comments when we loaned the headset out to other users. Be aware that there's no volume control on the headset so you must make any adjustments on your phone.

But that's not all. The Jawbone also uses adaptive microphones that capture and cancel out background noise, so incoming audio also is enhanced and adjusts to the varying noise levels for your location. We tested the Jawbone in a quiet room and on a busy street corner, and it performed well. We had no trouble hearing our callers in either situation, and they reported that they could hear almost none of the background noise when we were on the street. The noise-canceling feature does require power, however. Instead of running off an integrated battery, the Jawbone pulls power from your cell phone. Aliph promises that the headset draws only about 15 percent of your battery life, but if you often use the headset, you should frequently charge your phone just to be safe. In our tests, we didn't see any real impact on our V600's battery life.

This can't be the best available product

Pros: It is sleek looking, that's the best thing about it.

Cons: I don't like the fit. I don't like the optional earpieces. I don't like the sound quality. I don't like that it turns itself off and on with no warning.

Review: It doesn't fit properly. I tried all four available earpieces and it falls off my ear constantly. One of the earpieces itself broke. The little part that goes into the ear is too big (maybe it's just my dainty woman ears). And yes, I tried all four of the available pieces for that as well. It is also VERY difficult to pull the charger off the top of the jawbone. It turns itself off and on all the time on a funny little bluetooth whim. And everyone I talk to complains about how poor the sound quality is.

Fit and Audio Quality Compromised

Pros: Noice cancellation makes call possible when driving in vehicle

Cons: See Bottom Line Summary

Review: The concept of this Bluetooth earpiece is fantastic. However, I have returned this earphone and would not accept it for free.

The package comes with multiple ear loops and ear pieces. This is a nice gesture on the part of Jawbone.

I could not get the earpiece to fit properly against my face. This is crucial for the noise cancellation to work. Worse off, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, you will be completely frustrated at any adjustment you make to your specs as this will make the earpiece move out of place. This said, the noise cancellation will not be able to function properly.

The sound is tinny at best. It is difficult to make out who is calling by voice alone. I did find that when I could get the earpiece to fit, the noise cancellation worked rather well. However, the louder the background noise, the more your voice to your caller sounds synthesized and will occasionally break up.

The ?talk? button is very sensitive. Any attempt to re-adjust your earpiece during a call in progress easily disconnects your call. This I found to be the most annoying issue with the Jawbone.

For the noise cancellation, you have no idea if it is on or off until the other end states that they are hearing a lot of background noise.

For the iPhone, which I know of, you have to answer the call using the Jawbone in order for the audio to come through the earpiece. If you answer directly on the phone, the audio will be directed through the phone.

9/10 Very Good

Pros: Very Clear Doesn't Sound Like I'm Under Water

Cons: Flimsy Ear Loops Breaks Easy ,Extra Accessories Such as Chargers Not Available

Review: Let me start by saying the Jawbone Bluetooth is probably the best bluetooth out there and I tried just about all.Reception is very clear, people say I don't sound like I'm under water. The life between charges is about 8 hours of talk time.Idle time is about 2 days.Very easy to pair up with your phone.Noise reduction feature is a great tool and works. The support staff is there 24/7 if you have questions. The cons extra chargers and car chargers don't exist.I found someone on ebay for an extra USB charger. The ear loops for the bluetooth are very weak and snap very easily. If they had stronger ear loops and more accessories this would be perfect. But,if this is the only problem you are way ahead of the game.Verizon stores sell this for $120.00.If you look online you can probably get it for $80.00 or less.Amazon had it for $80.00.I recommend this bluetooth to all.

Jawbone eargels improvement

Pros: Very good sound quality

Cons: Only average sound volume due to standard eargels

Review: The standard eargels are just average for the Jawbone. Use the large Jabra eargels. Available on line and at Radio Shack. Take the metal ring out of the standard Jawbone eargel. You'll have to pry it out as it's glued in. Insert the metal ring into the Jabra eargel. You should be able to force fit the ring in place in the Jabra ear gel. You can now use the Jabra ear gel as you would the standard Jawbone ear gel. Twist and lock in place. You can get rid of the ear loop as the Jabra ear gel will hold snugly in your ear. The volume is louder and background noise you hear will be reduced due to the snug fit.

Poor Support from Company

Pros: Cool Technology

Cons: Company does not support customers

Review: I own a cellphone store and have been selling Jawbones. We have had several die in the first 30 days. As a customer would expect, we have replaced those units. Now Jawbone is telling us that they will not replace the units. Every other bluetooth manufacturer we carry is very conserned about the customer and wants to make any problems with their product as painless for the customer as possible, evidently not Jawbone. I will no longer carry this product in my store. A product is more than just hardware, it also includes how well the company stands behind it.

FINALLY!!! A BLUETOOTH HEADSET THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!!!

Pros: EXCELLENT!!!!

Cons: I have no complaints!!!

Review: For two years I have been trying to find a bluetooth headset that actually works without aggravation. The cheaper ones seem to dial out on their own. The more expensive ones were noisy and had short battery life. I used the lg9800 and now have the EnV lg9900. I tried the lg headsets, Motorola, and several others. Some had compatibility issues. The sales weasels told me that all bluetooth was universal. That's just plain BULL!! "Here, buy this one!" At least at Best Buy, you have 30 days to return. I did a lot of that. This Jawbone I purchased there was $139.00. They are less expensive elsewhere but convenience ruled. It took a while to adjust the Jawbone to fit my ear but once I got things adapted and bent right, I don't know it's there. I don't care what it looks like,,,, I JUST WANTED IT TO WORK!! This one does the job and looks good. I work in noisy places and am outside a lot. I was on the phone and several planes and one helicopter went over. I continued my conversation with some annoyance. Previously I would have had to discontinue the conversation till later. I am very impressed!!! At this point I wouldn't have anything else. The reason I tried it was a review like this written by someone I wish to thank. THANK YOU!!!

Jawbone Junk

Pros: It works, comes on I mean

Cons: 0 to 10 - I give it a 3

Review: 1 The Jawbone want stay on my ears either one
2 the buttons are very hard to push and also hard to fine
3 too big and heavy and the quality of the sound isn't miraculous as stated in their Video.

Blueheadsets.com said "Never heard that before. One of the best headsets on the market".

Response: Perhaps the other people who thinks that this is the best headset on the market haven't tried multiple headsets

Blueheadsets.com DOES NOT have 100% satisfaction guarantee policy multiple emails then a large 20% restocking fee and a lot of attitude and the d.xx form that I have to fill out and return to get a return Authorization #.

Contact Starfleet Command, Lt. Uhura!

Pros: works well in noisy conditions

Cons: Nothing significant

Review: This thing looks like something Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) used to wear on the original Star Trek series. It performs well in noisy conditions. I also have a Plantronics bluetooth headset, and when I would try to use it in my car for Voice Command dialing when it was pouring down rain, the Voice Command software could never understand me. However, with this Jawbone headset, my Voice Command software understands me under these same conditions.

worthless warranty

Pros: good sound for person called

Cons: poor sound for caller; warranty worthless

Review: The power charger is tearing off the end cap on mine. I've owned it for about 45 days and can not return to the place of purchase because they have a 30 day return policy. They directed me to Jawbone. Jawbone will not honor the warranty because it was not an "authorized" seller and I did not purchase directly from Jawbone. After I found myself stuck, I learned of others with similar misfortune. If you can not afford the cost of this item without regard to warranty protection, be sure to read it very carefully before purchasing.

Jawbone's volume/mic has issues

Pros: Noice cancelling works

Cons: Volume is low, other end also does not hear me loud enough

Review: The unit is pretty good but the volume control is lacking. It is hard to raise the volume in ear and the mic works w/ noise cancelling but it does not transmit the voice where it is not loud enough on the other end.

Overall good.

Pros: good (not great ) sound quality;

Cons: buttons are hard to press; ear loop is fragile.

Review: overall, this is a good unit. it's much better than my previous bluetooth headset.

my only complaint so far is that the ear loop is fragile. when i'm not using it, i keep my bluetooth in my pocket; this was a bad idea because the ear loop ended up breaking.
i was supposed to get free replacements for filling out their survey, but they haven't done that.
i just had to order a replacement and it'll cost me almost $20.

AVOID THIS PRODUCT - Died after 2 weeks; company won't stand behind warranty

Pros: good sound quality while it lasted

Cons: uncomfortable to wear

Review: This expensive headset worked fine out of the box, but after two weeks it started having problems with voice transmission.

The shocking part was that the company does not stand behind their warranty unless it is purchased directly from them or from an AT&T store. They claim that getting it from anyone else means that you are not the "original owner" and the warranty only applies to the original owner.

They were steadfast in their refusal to help.

It just doesn't work for normal use

Pros: Looks cool.

Cons: Fits poorly, too quiet, people couldn't hear me, kept cutting out.

Review: I've owned a bluetooth headset for about 6 months now. In that time, making dozens of calls a day, not one person ever complained that I was on a headset. The ONE day I used this Jawbone headset, EVERY person complained they couldn't hear me. What was worse is I couldn't hear them without holding the jawbone tight into my ear. (My other headset I have to turn down because it's too loud!)

I tried to talk on the phone with a vacuum cleaner in the background. Sure the people could kinda hear me and it cut out the vacuum noise, but in a normal setting where I am 90% of the time, they couldn't hear me! Don't buy it.

Awful sound, despite the rave

Pros: cool looking

Cons: Sounds like a screaching train at the other end!!!

Review: At first look, it looks good. but, for starters, the buttons are very had to press. you can't tell is the headset and/or the headset is on or off, very hard to pair with a cellphone. Also, when I was trying to remove it from the charger, the piece on the back broke off! Everyone I talk to says it sounds like a train is screaching behind me! Don't buy this waste of money!!!!

Pros: Good when it works

Cons: Often fails

Review: Works well when its works...first one failed, replacement failed (dead on arrival). Support told us to take it to Cingular to have them trouble shoot it (but we did buy it from Cingular).

Ear support also broke.

Product apparently has serious bugs. I would get no where near this product until the bugs are clear out.

Disappointing execution of great promise

Pros: beautiful packaging, light weight, fashionable

Cons: uncomfortable, sounds hollow/tinny

Review: I was so excited to get my Jawbone. I ordered the black one. I was deciding between the Jawbone or the Plantronics 655/665 to replace my old, falling apart, Jabra BT500. I decided on Jawbone due to the overwhelmingly more positive user reviews here on cnet, compared with the reviews of the Plantronics. Both headsets have those who love them, both have detractors. Just seemed the criticsm of the Plantronics was more on point.
I am in the car and outdoors almost all day. Those with whom I spoke on the Jawbone noticed no improvement over my old Jabra. I, on the other hand, noticed a tinny, hollow sound. It sounded like the speaker was in a tin can over my ear. Lastly, I couldn't find an ear piece to fit well. The headset flopped around a bit and became very uncomfortable by the end of the day.
I am returning my Jawbone (ordered from their website), and instead ordering a Plantronics 510. At least it's comfortable.

Won't support known defects! Falls out of ear.

Pros: Does have good sound quality.

Cons: Won't support known defects! Falls out of ear.

Review: I REALLY wanted to love this headset andI've tried hard. The earplugs are terrible to fit, they fall out of my ears, I've tried them all. I've tried Jabra ear gels over them, but they fall off when rotated. I've tried the complex ear hooks, but sound deteriorates.
Biggest issue is they admit they have a KNOWN issue with tight chargers tearing off the black end caps. Then the quiet button no longer works. They will ONLY support their own product if bought from THEIR website. so beware!!
Has been a very negative experience!

Meets all that is advertised

Pros: no background noise, easy to use, best sound yet

Cons: Have not had any

Review: Finally a bluetooth headset that does not have background noise or an echo. Despite many reports, I found it easy to put over my ear (used to this type of headset with a loop) and it stays on just fine.

I turned the music up very loud on my home office computer and called into the office and they could not hear any background noise - ot bad for surround sound with a sub way up! Others have said that the sound is very clear and the voice is the best they have heard on any phone or headset.

I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Garbage. Damn thing can't even stay on my ear for me to test

Pros: Technology

Cons: Doesn't fit!!! Returning it immediately

Review: This headset to me is the worst and I'm not some sissy businessman that knows nothing about technology. I anticipated buying one but now I can't wait to return it. It doesn't fit on my ear which makes me wonder if the Engineers tried it on after they designed it. My $15 headset works better and fits better than this thing, not to mention it has volume control. It's so bad that I can't even call someone to test it without it falling off my ear and dumbo has nothing on me when it comes to ear size. I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy

Looks better than it works

Pros: If it works it would be great

Cons: Cuts off during phone calls, this is the second one I have received from the company

Review: This is now the second one I have had. The first along with it's replacement is not working. While in use and I am on phone talking using Jawbone. I get a signal from the phone that there is a weak signal and with in a few seconds I am cut off from who I am talking to. This happened with the first Jawbone and now it is happening with the replacement. I also have two other bluetooth headsets which have never cut off, so it is not a problem with the phone. I have talked to other people who are having the same problem. I will be sending this back for a refund.

compared to others, noise cancellation in REAL WORLD environment is effective!

Pros: perfect for nite clubs, construction sites, noisy restaurants, movie theaters :), crowded areas, and driving in the car

Cons: short battery life, a bit bigger than other headsets

Review: I must admit that this headset is better than most others i've tried with "noise cancellation." In a loud club scene with dance music blaring, I was able to hold a conversation without walking out to talk to someone. Quite convenient when you're with a group and you're trying to find out where the rest of your guests are arriving to the scene.

I purchased the bluetooth spec2 headset from cingular. I also bought a few extra as gifts and to sell to those interested: hxxp://*******.com/y86cru

Finally, they built a product that cancels out enough noise to make it worth using in noisy areas.

If only it was wireless

Pros: noise-cancelling technology

Cons: wired connection

Review: I haven't used one before, but now that I have my bluetooth headset, I'll never go back to the tether. My biggestcomplaint for any headset I've used is the local noise infiltration. If this really works as promised, and was Wireless (!), it would be perfect!
a 4-5 hour talk time would be sufficient to keep the size and weight down.
I'd gladly spend $150 for something like this.

I have used it on the Washington DC Metro, at Fed Ex Field, Dulles Airport, in Europe, and in a Mall

Pros: It cancels out all of the background noise so everyone thinks that I am sitting alone in a room.

Cons: Obviously it doesn't work for every single phone and is still wired (not blue tooth)

Review: Ever know the feeling when you get a new piece of technology, and it changes the way you live your life? Well, the Jawbone has certainly done that for me. No matter where I am, I can now talk on the phone and not have to raise my voice or cup my mouth over the phone. That means when I am in public, I don't disturb others around and and it means that I can always take a business call thus improving my efficency.

And for once there is a headset that is somewhat stylish. Compared to my old motorola and plantronics headset Jawbone is a fashion statement!

Sorry if I am glowing, but I just struck gold.. I am surprised that I had to find out about this 3rd hand, and surprised that it is not carried at retailers nation wide... What gives?
