"Great headset, worthless charger" on by Robh
Pros: Great clarity, featherweight, comfortable
Cons: charger is nearly impossible to use
Summary: I have owned two of these (actually the first was a 640 which is mechanically identical). They work really well. The earpiece is comfortable and fits snugly enough that you don't need anything else to keep it in your ear. The controls are easy to use as well and the audio clarity is very good. People I call do not notice that I am using a headset. Even in a car, the background noise is not a nuisance to the listener.
The bad: I find it incredible that a company can release a product that has such a poorly designed function (charging) as to make it nearly unusable. In theory, you plug the earpiece into a cylinder like charger and it charges. In practice (based on the two that I have owned), the earpiece either immediately pops out of its socket or gradually comes out while lying on a flat surface. There is no positive lock.
I bought this because of the weight and size and love it when I use it. Unfortunately, everyday when I recharge it I want to return it. -
"Headset 10; Charger 1" on by sbyte1
Pros: Great headset: excellent sound quality, very light, various ways to charge the unit
Cons: The way the headset rests in the charger
Summary: Caution, if you purchase this headset take notice of how it sits in the charger. The charger has a clip on it indicating that the whole unit can just rest in your shirt pocket until a call comes in. Then it vibrates, your remove the earpiece and answer the call. Well, my first earpiece fell out of the charger and onto the ground at a rest stop along the Interstate. It's so light that I didn't even notice until 10 miles up the road. Good bye $95. My second unit (I like the earpiece that much) fits more securely in the charger but it slowly pops up preventing contact with the charger (I had to tape the 2 pieces together to charge it). Plantronics has happily agreed to replace my second unit and they immediately sounded like they were familair with the problem. Hopefully, this one will snap securely together.
If you buy the unit DON'T let it rest in a shirt pocket. -
"Very good overall, takes some getting used to...." on by sarcscs
Pros: size and charging options
Cons: charger / cradle has poor design, somewhat short battery life
Summary: Overall this is a great bluetooth unit. I bought it ($80 online) because it does not look like some huge monstrosity on the side of your head/ear. It's very small and light and at times, I forget I have it on. The earpiece design (in the ear) may bother some but I think that is one of the positive aspects. The user can hear very well with volume room to spare. Most I call do not know I am using a BT earpiece. I use it mainly in my auto and I have also walked with my 100 lb. labrador with the earpiece easily secure and have had no problem trotting along as he walks me. If you are into lots of movement outside or inside, this may not be the best unit for you. I think the ear support works well but I have only tried it on for size/comfort testing.
Battery life is OK. I can use it in my auto as I travel around the mile high city for two full work days without recharging. Depends on use obviously...I use it about 2 hrs per day or less. I have read that the 640 without the Digital Sound Processing has a better batter life. The DSP eats up more battery life but it is a fair trade off for the quality that I have experienced. I always can charge it during meetings using the AAA battery charger, a great addition when one is away from an outlet. NO other company offers OR includes it with the unit! A nice touch. If you want something that has amazing battery life, you may want to look elsewhere. Sound quality is quite good on both ends of the call. Most people do not know I am using a BT headset unless there is lots of background/wind/ambient noice. If I need my phone in a situation like that, I would just use my phone directly or call them back when in a different environment. Any BT headset or corded headset would pick up the ambient/backgound noise in these cases. No big deal.
Size is amazing and after using the 645 for the first two weeks, the unit seems durable. I have had it knocked out of my hands by a running 5 year old and it seems solid. It has a lot of technology crammed into a small package so it wont suvive being crunched if one sits on or the earpiece is repeatedly dropped. I pair it with the LG VX8300 and the connection is right on, no matter which system has the bluetooth turned on first. Initial pairing is simple. Since the earpiece has one function button it does take some getting used to. The volume rocker is easy and effective. I have found that if I hold the main button about three seconds and release after the first beep, it powers right up. I initially held the button as the manual stated and it always ended up too long and put the earpiece into discovery mode. I never accidently put it in this mode after the second day of use. It also will take some time to 'hear' when the device connects to answer or connects with the voice command. The voice command function needs to work in a very quiet environment (ie windows up, music/background noice real low) or with you phone set on LOW sensitivity. The three sizes of earpieces are grippy for your ear and Plantronics sent me another set after the aforementioned pooch decided to chew on the size I use-go figure! Great support Plantronics!
Overall a great unit with one gripe: Plantronics did NOTHING to address the fact that the 640 AND 645 earpiece unit sits very loosely and has the potential to fall out of the charger piece. Since I dont place the unit in my shirt pocket to carry or use the pocket charger, it's not really a huge deal. But for charging on my desk it seems ok - if the charger topples over, it will not have the contact to charge. One just has to be careful, I guess. The aluminum carry case is nice but I fit all I need into my oakley metal case, which I have to carry anyway, so there are no extras to be taken on the road, save the wall charger. None of the 4 mobile/car charging options that are included match my LG but it's a nice thought that no other company has tried to do. The included mini usb charger is great for my laptop or desktop to charge pretty rapidly. Please excuse my incessant rambling. Go out and get the 645 and at least try it. I like it and it has performed well for me. I will respond to this post after 3 months with an update. Peace -
"GREAT BLUETOOTH HEADSEET" on by rickl
Pros: Small size, extra charging adapters, great sound.
Cons: Bad charger connection
Summary: This is a great bluetooth headset and mine works flawlessly with my Sony t637 cell phone. It paired easily and I usually use it about 1 hr. per day and the charge lasts me about 1.5 wks. The charger sleeve itself could be better if it would snap together with the headset instead of just slipping together. The headset itself however is awesome and I love the way it works and doesn't look like I have a tumor coming out the side of my head. This is a great unit and don't be afraid to get one they work great.

"Better Than the JX10 / The Best I've Used" on by contaxgary
Pros: Sound Quality, Noise Suppression, Comfortable
Cons: Docking Bay could use some work. Connector Unstable
Summary: For some reason, there are two threads regarding the 645. This is my review from the other thread.
I can stick my head next to a fan on high and hold a conversation. Freeway noise is muted to a greater degree than either the JX10, or my old Tekkeon Mini. Receiving quality far outstrips the JX10 and is on par, or better than the Tekkeon. The person on the other end reports good sound with a slight echo, unnoticed until I asked, when DSP is working hard. I can use it without the auxiliary ear piece and it is all day comfortable, but I don't need to keep it in my ear all day. It comes with a pocket docking bay. So, it is easy to keep in the pocket, but care must be taken that it doesn't undock during charging. The docking bay could be better designed. This is the best bluetooth headset that I have used.
Three suggestions for improvement:
1. Secure locking in the charging bay.
2. Earpiece that can lock at the desired rotation and an earpiece that can be inserted into the ear canal, thus allowing for reduced volume and potential distortion. This was a Tekkeon feature.
3. Pen like charging bay that clips securely to a shirt pocket.
