Panasonic Viera TC-P50X1

Who needs 1080p? The "only" 720p resolution of Panasonic's entry-level plasma is a nonissue to even the most eagle-eyed viewers, even on its big 50-inch screen. Spend the savings on Blu-rays, which will still look better than DVDs on this TV.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Although it requires more than a few picture quality trade-offs, the Panasonic TC-P50X1 delivers the best black-levels-to-dollars ratio of any HDTV we've tested.
