"Expensive, but necessary" on by teamw
Pros: You want to have one of these
Cons: Big money for little piece of plastic
Summary: Good thing I own some stock in Apple. The margin on this thing is probably 8000% or worse.
The problem is, what else you gonna do? Dropping the thing into a dock at the end of the day to sync up and recharge is just so much easier than plugging in a little dongle and having an ugly loose wire sticking out of the side of your desk. This keeps your desk neat and organized, and there is really no substitute for what it does in a 3rd party peripheral.
It does have a line out jack if you want to connect speakers to it and it has holes in the bottom so you can still use it as a speaker phone. I doubt either of those features will get a lot of use, but whatever.
It doesn't even come with a new charging cable or charging plug, so you really are paying over $20 for a little piece of plastic that probably has about $0.39 of parts in it.
Ouch. At least buy me a drink first, etc.
But it really is a necessary peripheral, something Apple was right to include in the box with the last iPhone. Just consider the purchase price of the phone as $220, swallow hard and buy it. You just spent $200 on a phone, do you really want a dongle wire sticking out of your desk for the next 2 years? -
"Overpriced and an inconvenient nuissance." on by okhouraki
Pros: Charges the iPhone...
Cons: Expensive. All you get is the dock base, no cord. Can't use if you have your iPhone in a case.
Summary: Seriously? What the hell, Apple?!?! You needed to charge an extra 29 bucks for this simple piece of plastic that you used to provide free of charge with the first iPhone? And on top of that you DON'T include any cables to plug it into an outlet? AND, you make it so people who protect their iPhone with a case (READ: Practically every sensible iPhone owner) can't plug their iPhone into the dock without first removing the phone from the case? This is what you consider a convenient accessory???
Bravo. Awesome job Apple. You are well on your way to becoming the next Micro(we couldn't care less about people)soft. -

"Empty Mini-DVD Case Does the Same Thing" on by USAFVet1
Pros: It docks the iPhone
Cons: Should be free with purchase of iPhone
Not worth $49.99 at Best Buy
You can create your own iPhone dock with a Mini DVD case (method below)Summary: You can have the same effect without spending anything. Here's what I use - Mini-DVD cases. if you have a camcorder you may already have some of these cases around the house. Just flip it open, place the iPhone in the little insert/holder, and now you have a perfect way to display your iPhone on your desk. It is transparent, so it shows off your iPhone. It also makes a great way to watch movies if you turn your iPhone horizontal and support it on the case. You can use a nail file to put a couple of notches in it for more support. Easy.
