The Griffin Simplifi ($79) is a USB-connected dock for Apple's iPod and iPhone that offers an integrated Flash memory card reader. To be clear, the Griffin Simplifi doesn't let you import or export files directly between Flash cards and your iPod, it simply consolidates a USB card-reader and iPod dock into a single, attractive device.
You really can't make an iPod dock look sexy. By their nature, products such as the Griffin Simplifi aren't prized for their looks, but for their capability to declutter a desktop in the least offensive way possible. That said, the block of curved aluminum and white plastic making up the Griffin Simplifi does a nice job of blending in with Apple's Mac line-up.
The top of the Griffin Simplifi offers a universal dock compatible with Apple's iPod and iPhone (including the iPhone 3G). Six pop-out plastic adapters are included with the Griffin Simplifi to ensure a snug fit for your iPod or iPhone.
The back of the Griffin Simplifi includes a decent amount of connections, including a Mini-USB plug for connecting to your computer, two full-size USB ports, and an optional power input for an included power adapter. Noticeably missing are the audio and video output jacks included on Apple's own universal dock.
The Simplifi's 3-in-1 card-reader is conveniently built into the front of the dock, with support for Memory Stick, SD, and Compact Flash memory cards. The three supported card formats cover the major media types for most consumer digital cameras; however, in the age of 62-in-1 card readers, Griffin's offerings seem timid.
Functionally, the Griffin Simplifi delivers on the few promises it makes. Whether an iPod or a Flash memory card, the Simplifi connected the media to our desktop computer without a hint of diminished speed. During testing, our computer supplied enough power over USB to make the included power adapter unnecessary but we're glad to see one included.
