Summary: When my wife gave me the green light to build a home theater, I started my intense research. It was my first venture into the HD world. 720p, 1080i, 1080p....what does it all mean? After extensive research, price comparisons and pros/cons we evaluated, we settled on a package deal for the HD100U, 25' component, 25' HDMI, mount and 92" screen.
We have our projector mounted 12.75 feet from our 92" screen.
The brightness of this projector is amazing. We run it on the low lamp mode and it is still great. When on the low mode, the fan noise is very low and unheard once your sound system is on. In dark and light scenes, the picture is always good. I put Into The Blue on and the colors of the ocean and reef scenes is stunning. In sports and high action scenes with quick, bright flashes (War of the Worlds) it has instantaneous response.
Due to the lower contrast, you should have very little ambient light in the room. I have 2 encasement windows in my basement and must cover the one closest to the screen or it bleeds in. This may be true of all projectors from what I have read. If getting 15000:1 contrast means thousands more, it is definitely not worth it.
We did upgrade our screen to a screen by Elite Screens and as a gray tone. Even with this upgrade, our package was under $1400 and well worth it.
CONCLUSION: 1080 i or p is not worth it at this point given the cost of the projector. For under $1000, you can own this projector. When enough sources are broadcasting 1080p, the cost of those projectors will be more realistic and a switch can be made at that time, whenever that happens. Since installing this, I have had 4 other people see it and make plans to order it. I think that speaks for itself. -

Pros: Sub $1000. HD! Bright, Bright, BRIGHT!!! Quiet.
Cons: A LARGE unadjustable throw angle-
Summary: I've owned the X1 infocus for 3+ years and decided it was time for an upgrade. I wanted and HD projector and one that would truly seem like an upgrade.
I am NOT disappointed!
This machine is brighter, quieter, and SO MUCH crisper in picture. Heck after having the X1 this machine may be too bright - very good problem to have! I’ve already put this in low power for the bulb and adjusted the brightness down more- this means that I can easily view this during the day in the room that the projector is located.
This machine has made me happy in every way (except one- see below). I have no regrets and for it being under $1000 (even under $900 if you search a little bit) you can’t get better.
If you are trying to decide on a sub- $1000 HD projector, this one is fantastic and you should have no regrets.
Okay my one MAJOR problem. The built in throw angle is enormous! I cannot add a ceiling mount to hang this projector from and thus I HAD to rearrange my entertainment center and its location to allow this projector to work. You must have space to either have your projector below your screen/wall or have a place to set a ceiling mount. It cannot be at the same level of your screen or even slightly above without having major adjustments. But the HD1000 does have a pretty good Keystone correction function (both up and down and left and right) so if you have to set this unit at an angle (like myself) you can make the picture look pretty close to normal. -

together for LESS than a $1000 bucks. Even connecting our Wii via component connection looks fantastic. Even day watching in a
bright room is great, and that surprised me. This projector is a must have for anyone that would like to have a movie theatre in their home. It's awesome to have a 169" HD picture in your living room. Drawbacks?.....Your friends and family may not want to leave when you want them to leave. -

Summary: I moved up from an six year old Sanyo business projector to this HD model. Projecting onto a 92" screen. Also paired it with a close-out first gen Toshiba HD XA1 HD-DVD Player (got the projector for $875 (The Projector Place) and the player for $385 (eBay) -- both delivered for only $1,260). Bought a 25' HDMI cable on eBay for about $20. Well, the results were spectacular. I'm blown away by this new generation of well-priced HD home theater gear. My only concern was the 720p resolution of the projector versus the 1080i of the player. I had the occasion to speak with a custom HT installer regarding the difference between 720p and 1080p projectors. His take was that for my 92" screen, the difference between 720p and 1080p would not be observable. After watching a few movies, now, I can say that I am very very happy with this projector, 720p and all. I'm even happier that I made the jump to an HD home theater for only $1260. Amazing!! Installation: Some have commented on the installation restrictions for this projector...... I have my projector ceiling mounted, room depth is 13 feet. The projector fit right up to my existing universal ceiling mount -- and set-up for my 92" screen took only about 3 minutes. A few tweaks on the zoom, focus, and mount.... and I was done. Could not have been easier. Noise: The low lamp mode works great for me and really is not much more dim than full lamp mode -- but saves bulb life -- and the noise from the projector is nearly zero. My last Sanyo business projector was very loud and annoying. Calibration: Using my Digital Video Essentials - I ran the projector through the contrast, brightness, color, and sharpness tests. I'm not an expert at this my any means, but the projector only required minor adjustments. I never did fogure out the sharpness control, however. The DVE opening sequence was shot in HD, but mastered for regular DVD. Regardless, it looked amazing on this new player/projector combo. Overall: For the incredible pricing being offered on this HD projector, I don't think you can go wrong -- the 720p versus 1080p does not appear to be an issue in the 100" screen size that most of us use. Again, $1,260 for the Toshiba HD XA1 and this projector has made the leap to HD HT available to the rest of us.
