  • "Early Failure"
    on by harryzimmer

Pros Excellent Picture on 100" screen (but have problem now :-(
Lots of Information & control via the user menu
Unit was easily installed by professional team
Speedy response to problem query from panasonic technician

Cons Early Failure of some circuitry (18 months after purchase)
Bulb rated for 1,800 hours before replacement needed (bulb is CAD$500+tax) - you only learn this when you read the manual.
The unit is large & heavy

Summary I did a ton of reasearch before i bought this unit. I have been a Sony person for most of my life. This is the first Panasonic product that I have ever owned. I only bought it at the time it was rated best in class and was $1000 cheaper than the equivalent Sony.

My rating is good unit - BUT protect yourself .... BUY an extended warranty (3 or 4 years) for this unit. I have had an early failure now which has me cursing that i did not buy it. The unit has not malfunctioned after 18 months since I bought it. The manufacturer warrant only lasts 1 year.

In case you are interested in what my problem is: the screen has started to flash light and dark very noticably on the screen in a constant way. It is really noticebale when watching Blue Ray or watching HD TV. The tech at Panasonic says it is not the bulb but rather another component that needs servicing. I am sad as I have to de-install the unit now and drive it to the Panasonic authorized repair center on the other side of town. I have never had a Sony unit ever fail so soon. My last projection unti (non-HD 1080p) was a Sony that lasted just over 4 years. I decided not to buy a new bulb (which went after almost 2,800 hours - but cost about about CAD$425+tax) but get a nice shiny new projector with 1080p/i capability.

  • "Very Impressive!"

Pros great detail, good blacks, brighter than most

Cons color accuracy (out of the box), a bit on the loud side.

Summary Using DVE to set it up, I was able to finely adjust all aspects of this projector. The only area where I had trouble was color. I'm sure that this could be adjusted further, as there were more options than I have seen on lower end projectors, but I was a bit hesitant to fool with them as I wasn't sure what I was doing. Given that this projector has 5 different custom settings that you can save/load as you wish, I'll probably play with those settings a bit more and see if I can "learn" how to get more accurate colors out of it.

The 1000U is brighter than most projectors in it's class, but may still be lacking a bit given that I have it on a 159" screen. With the lights off, it is fantastic, but it is not terribly tolerant of ambient light at a screen of that size. When I adjusted the zoom down closer to 110" (+/-) this improved dramatically.

All and all, this projector is incredible. The 1080p is awesome, and given that this projector is about 500 less than the Mitsubishi, it is an obvious choice for the best thing going in 1080p.

  • "This thing is awesome!"
    on by archge

Pros Beautiful picture, easy setup, good value & DURABLE!

Cons I just can't think of any...maybe a remote keystone feature but not a big deal.

Summary I'm assuming you have researched all of the reviews on this projector and I can say they are all accurate and more. I used the same reviews to make my decision and buy it.

I have a slight twist on this projector that you will not see in any other reviews though. This thing is built like a truck or I'm just really lucky, or both probably.

While installing my proud new purchase on the ceiling, with a mount purchased from a 3rd party , to my horror the mount connection let loose and my projector fell almost 7 feet and bounced on my carpet covered concrete floor!!!

I stood there in shock and anger looking at my (what I assumed) trashed projector laying there. I fully expected to hear hundreds of broken glass and what-not shards rattle around inside as I picked it back up. The usual thoughts went through my mind, yeah...I'll take it back and say it came this way and get a new one. Be it a good or bad trait of mine, I'm just not wired that way and beside, the box it came in was in perfect condition so no rational person would believe me anyway.

Well, as I picked it back up, to my amazement, nothing was loose inside. I checked the lense, no cracks or misalignment. Upon inspecting the case, there was a small amout of damage with some minor cracks but they are located were it will never show when installed.

I took the case apart to see what must have broken inside...nothing!

Well, long story short, I installed it, fired it up and it works beautifully! I'm not sure how many projectors would have lived through that one but mine did.
