Judged on looks alone, Aiwa's HT-DV90 home theater in a box (HTIB) probably won't wow too many passersby on the showroom floor. It's a pretty standard package: a slim combo A/V receiver and DVD player teamed up with a fairly compact 5.1-speaker ensemble. Ah, but once we auditioned the DV90, we discovered that its sound quality, plentiful features, and easygoing ergonomics put it ahead of the competition.

Speaking of speakers
This kit's five satellites are armed with 4-inch drivers, which are definitely a step up from the more typical 2- to 3-inch woofers that we usually see. The silver, plastic sats' cabinets are a tad larger than those of more space-efficient speakers, but you can hang 'em high with their integral key-holed wall mounts. We're also happy to note that the DV90's sub jumps out of the pack of me-too designs. It has a wood cabinet, and it's endowed with a largish woofer (nearly 8 inches in diameter) so it can deliver more and better bass than a run-of-the-mill 6-inch subwoofer. However, while this nonpowered sub is impressive, you can further improve the sound by adding a powered sub.

The DV90's sleek, metal front panel and controls feel more substantial than those of all-plastic kits, making the overall vibe closer to that of a regular component system. Another nice touch: The receiver's front-panel controls duplicate the remote's menu, cursor, and Enter buttons, so you can play and navigate DVDs even when you misplace the remote. The receiver/DVD player doles out the standard Dolby Digital/DTS surround sounds and delivers 38 watts to each of the six speakers.

On another positive note, Aiwa didn't skimp on the connectivity options, which include component-video, S-Video, and standard composite-video outputs, plus two digital-audio inputs and one digital out. Typically, such a setup is seen only on more expensive kits.

The remote is also worth a mention because it's unusually flexible; it lets you individually adjust the relative levels of the subwoofer and the front and center speakers without bringing up setup menus. The remote also keys into other functions such as tone controls and many surround-mode options.

Supersonics
We cruised through the Speed DVD and watched Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock having lots of fun on a bus. The picture was crisp and the colors were rich and vibrant. Dialogue from the center speaker was pretty natural. When the cacophonous soundtrack delivered the sounds of screeching rubber, roaring engines, swooping helicopters, and things blowing up, the DV90 mimicked the sound of a larger system.

The sub was no slouch either; it rumbled with abandon, but only to a point. When we pumped up the volume to annoy-the-neighbors levels, we managed to trip the amplifier's protection circuits, and the unit shut down. OK, we learned that we could push the DV90 only so far, but that's par for the HTIB course.

Movies are one thing, but music can be an even tougher test for compact systems. That's no problem here, though--we listened to everything from Beethoven string quartets to raunchy blues to sophisticated jazz, and the DV90 was always musical. The player spins CD-Rs and CD-RWs and, yes, it can play MP3 CDs.

The $575 DV90 is a winner, though we preferred Pioneer's $620 five-disc-changer kit. True, the Pioneer's speakers take up more precious living space, but they can fill even larger rooms and play louder than the DV90.

THE WORST DVD SYSTEM EVER!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the absolute worst system ever! I have had nothing but problems with the DVD part of the system. The remote did not work the night we got it home. Circuit City would not take it back the next day. Nor would they even attempt to replace just the remote. Then, we took it to the service center . . .twice! Both times they said there was nothing wrong with it. We can't play any DVDs in it. There is also a horrible grinding noise when we put a DVD in it. It attempts to read it, but then says No Disc or Disc Error. I completely recommend staying far away from this product. The company will not work with you on fixing it and their guarantee policies suck!

Great all-in-one surround system

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just got the system yesterday and had it setup in no time. The sound of the system is excellent for the price. The EQ of the satellites can be adjusted seperately to the Sub so placement on a wall (which gives a bass proximity effect) or out in the open on stands is no problem. The Sub has extra thick speaker cable but I'm sure this could be improved further. There is a slight hiss from the speakers when there is no sound playing and this could be the amp or the fact that the speakers are 6ohm impedance and not the ususal 8ohm. If the speakera are changed, you can change the settings in the aiwa to use large speakers instead of satellites. Music is excellent from this system and the bass is quite fast and tight. Mounting the sub on spikes further improves things though this is not a standard feature. The system also has a line out for an active sub so all speakers can be upgraded. The unit does get warm as it houses the amplifier as well as the dvd/cd /mp3 player. As for the unit cutting out at high levels, I think that the sound level would put you out of the room before it would cut out. This is not a separates dolby digital system and in a larger room, it probably would struggle at higher levels. For your average 15x20 room this is a great starter surround system. For a bedroom, it is ideal - it has a fantastic picture with great shadow detail and sleep functions. The radio is excellent with full use of the advanced RDS features. Both AM and FM have great quality and reception and I am able to pickup weak signals with good clarity. The headphone output is excellent and can drive Pro headphones with very good clarity and separation of instruments. THe only niggle is the slight interference noise at very low levels but this never becomes intrusive to the music. Speaker placement is important as with any system, and it does benefit from taking time to setup the speakers in the recommended 5.1 configuration. This player is also multi-region and can be made to play any region with a number of simple remote control steps. The multi-region steps can be found easily on the internet. Highly recommended.

DVD drive malfunction

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After having this system for one year and being rather pleased, the DVD player now refuses to load a DVD all most all the time. When it decides to load the disc it plays choppy and then freeezes. I knew Sony DVD players were terrible and I should have known better.

v good

Pros:

Cons:

Review: nice sound that is also good for music aswell. shuts down at very high levels but this is'nt a problem unless you really crank it up, after all the cut out is to protect the system. very good value for money especially as it has a in built radio tuner and can play back mp3 cds.

not bad but not too good either

Pros:

Cons:

Review: very pecky on audio cd's skips regularly to next song and skips parts of CDs that a run of the mill CD player has no problem with. Also gets extremely warm your DVDs and CDs get out toasted

Good for movies, not music.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this system for its relatively good sound for the price. It sounds great w/ dvd's on the surround, but if you put in an audio cd think again. Weak sound, bass hardly hits at all, and if you try turning it up at all the protect feature shuts down the system. Try spending a little more monewy for a better system and you'll be alot happier.

fair price for the value

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After searching through many different 'not too expensive' HT systems I got this aiwa. I think that what you get for the price is fair and in most cases more than on other competitor systems. The only flaw I find is the subwoofer. It should be more powerful. I think I'll need to change it for an active subwoofer in the future.
