    "Not Ready for prime-time!"

    by 89bruin on January 7, 2006

    Pros: All-in-one design.

Cons: Buggy software, spotty DVD performance, audio drop-outs.

Summary: I've owned Bose products before & I love their speakers but I'd caution anyone considering a 3-2-1 system to tink twice ... I'd also hesitate about a lifestyle system or any of Bose's DVD players for that matter; the web is rife with reports of problems in all of these areas as I discovered after my unfortunate adventure.
I purchased my 3-2-1 GSX system new from a Bose store & within days discovered it would not store audio CDs properly. I was impressed when Bose tech support overnighted a complete new system to me with no hassle. Unfortunately, the replacement system exhibited an entirely new set of problems. It would not load Bose's music database update disc (simply kept re-booting & locked-up) and experienced numerous lock-ups while viewing DVDs that played fine in two other players. Bose again shipped out a replacement unit. This time the unit did accept the update disc but still encountered lock-ups with several DVDs. Bose claims that their DVD players (according to the tech rep I talked with) are far more picky than most because they read more of the data on the DVD ... from my perspective that's not such a good thing if it makes the unit unusable. In addition, the replacement unit began going mute for no apparent reason (no response to the volume control) and would only recover after a power-down. This is a buggy system and I got the impression from the tech rep I spoke with that the company knows it has a problem. Do yourself a favor & stay away from these units.
On the plus side, the folks at the Bose store were FANTASTIC! There was no hastle in returning the unit & they genuinely cared about my satisfaction. I've exchnged the 3-2-1 for a Bose surrond speaker system and a separate (non-Bose) DVD player & surround reciever. I'd recommend this approach over any of Bose's integrated systems.
