    "WOULD NOT BUY"

    by Northof49 on January 22, 2009

Pros: Speakers and subwoofer are awesome. Video operating menues are easy to navigate. AM and FM radio tuner work very well.

Cons: When playing a DVD or from the USB input it will skip. The speaker connections are very poor quality. The system automaticly senses and plays the radio on the subwoofer and L & R front speakers only.

Summary: When I first unpacked the Harmon Kardon HS300 I could only get 2 speakers and the subwoofer to work. Due to the poor quality of the speaker connections on the back of the unit it was difficult to get the wires captured under the flimsy plastic screw down connectors. When screwing down on the connectors they have a tendancy to push to the side and come out from under the screw down connector.

The system will automatically scan the input and only play on all speakers if it is recorded in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. If you play the radio only the front L & R speakers and subwoofer will operate. It is also the same when you play a TV series that is not recorded in Dolby 5.1 surround sound.

I have played DVDs and video from a USB thumb drive, and a USB external drive and they all skipped/jumped. I would not have thought too much of it if it only skipped when playing from the USB port, but when an origional DVD skipps there is a problem.

On the bright side the speakers and ecpecially the subwoofer are awesome. Of course if you just want speakers buy them seperately from the HS 300.

The AM and FM tuner works great even in the basement.

Finally the on screen menues are very easy to follow, and for the most part I left the settings set to the default, and only adjusted the +/- db settings for the speakers. For some reason the subtitles always come on when playing a DVD and I always had to turn them off.

If you are spending money for a big screen TV and good speakers, go the extra step and pay a little more for a seperate amplifier and DVD/Blue Ray player up front. At least most of the cost of the HS 300 system is in the speakers, so I won't mind replacing the player with seperate components down the line.
