Solid Performer!by bigyearn - February 27, 2005
Pros: Awsome receiver got all the dolby and logic stuff. enough power to push the speakers, very easy to use with or without remote. dvd player with on screen menu
Cons: the dvd player does not like enhanced music cd's and some dvd's. the non powered sub should be powered.
Review: overall for a first time buyer this htib is pretty good. ive owned it for two and a half years and the center channel just went out. the surround sound capabilities are great and it sounds good too. Instead of running sats for the front l/r speakers i bought jbl northridge series e-60 tower speakers and it made this system really sound good. music and movies this htib is a solid performer. even thought the pretty hefty price tag i only payed 400.00 from best buy for an open box value. it was returned because it would not play enhanced cd's. well I just burn my enhanced cd's and it works great that guys loss.

Won't play regular audio CDs or new enhanced CDsby - February 12, 2005
Pros: Good price, easy to set up, sounds great when it works.
Cons: I've owned this unit for 2 years and all of a sudden, it won't play normal audio CDs anymore. It reads "disk error" for retail audio CDs, enhanced audio CDs, and CD-Rs I've burned on my PC. Sure, it still plays DVDs but I bought it because it supposedly

Good system/decent price.by - January 16, 2005
Pros: This product is very easy to use. Instead of using sattelites for the front speakers i use jbl's E60 floorstanding speakers. It sounds great like that. I bought this item from best buy about 2 years ago as an open box item. I did not bother to put a warre
Cons: well as just about many electronic products you buy these days there will eventually be problems with it. it took two years to blow the center channel but that is fine. the dvd player produces great picture and is cable of great sound through a coax cable

I Hate It!!!by - September 5, 2003
Pros: This product is loaded with lots of features, pretty good sound, and is easy to use.
Cons: It is true if the system is used in a room bigger than most kitchens don't plan on getting your ears tickled. I owned the stupid thing for 1 year and my left rear speaker channel went out. I was like oh no big deal I?ll take it in for 50 bucks. Well maybe

This thing rocksby - March 13, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought a refurbished propack2 off of ebay and replaced sony components. This system will blow you away with its power. The volume comes on clean and slowly so you have a lot of adjustment room. The sub will blow you away. The only thing I do not like is the remote. It doesn't work very smoothly and is kind of confusing to operate.Other than that this system rocks.

A solid performer and a good value!by - January 9, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought JBL ProPack 600 about a year ago and have been very pleased with it's overall performance. What I was looking for in a Home Theater In a Box system was big sound and reasonable price. JBL delivers! My primary use is watching movies on DVD, and this home theater system gives me all the sound I need and then some. The audio is crisp and the 8" sub packs plenty of punch. I also use the ProPack 600 quite a bit for gaming on the PS2. The surround adds a whole new dimension to video games! Aside from quality sound, one area where the JBL spanks the competition is the ability to add auxiliary components. I easily hooked up both my JVC S-VHS VCR and my PS2, both with s-video connections, and still have one available a/v/s-video input connection on the back of the receiver. There are also a 4th set of a/v inputs on the front of the receiver (complete with s-video in) that I use to hook up my Sony Hi-8 camcorder. Bonus! I even hooked up my old dual-deck cassette unit, as well as a coax cable connection for the tuner (AM/FM is also nice to have built in that most others do not). Show me another brand of HTIB that matches the JBL for component input versatility! There is even an avaliable auxiliary hookup for an a seperate CD player. I can't see this being necessary, except for the problem of not being able to play CD-Rs in the DVD player (really JBL...what happend on that one???) Aside from the lack of CD-R playback, my only other minor complaint is the remote. While it does most everything you need (as well as a bunch of things I have no clue what they are for), it does not seem very logical and is quite cumbersome to use until you get used to it. However, when all is said and done, the ProPack 600 gets top marks for versatility, performance, and overall bang-for-the-buck. It my book that makes this unit a standout performer in it's class!

Great value home theater package!by - January 4, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought mine refurbished from ubid about 4 months ago. Easy to set up and use although the remote is not laid out as well as could be. I don't need to play cd-r or cd-rw so the model one is great for me. Awesome home theater with dvd. Component output gives great picture even on non-HDTV. Small speakers can't fill a large room with music like my old Bose 901s could but for most music listening and for home theater they are great. My wife likes the small speakers. Have had no problems with the unit but I don't sweat small stuff like the dvd player taking a few seconds longer to read a disc than some super player. The powered sub pumps out a lot of bass for its size. I think the model II uses a passive sub powered from a 6th channel in the amp so I don't know how it compares. I would have paid what I did for just the speakers alone in a retail store so I am more than satisfied.

DVD quality is a jokeby - January 2, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Just like MusicisMyLife wrote ..... DVD out of the box will noot power up. The unit has been sitting with an "authorized repair shop" for a month and still waiting for repair manual from JBL. I've sent the tech support e-mails and none have been returned. Also, trying to get the DTS to work using my sony DVD player with no luck. I'm using the coaxle input but I can't get it to read a DTS DVD.

Excellent Sound Qualityby - October 26, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The sound quality from this system is very, very good. The unit is a great buy if you can get it for under $700.00. I managed to purchase it from Best Buy on clearance for appx. $480.00. My biggest gripe is remote. It forces you to select which component when you need to make an adjustment. For example, want to fast forward while playing the dvd? You have to hit the DVD button, then the fast forward key. Then if you want to adjust the volume? You have to hit the "Main" key, then you can adjust the volume. It's a pain. Others mentioned that the DVD player can't play CD-R's. I've had no problem with CD-R's, regardless of music format (WAV or MP3). The DVD unit has worked flawlessly. The movie and music sound, as well as FM radio is superb. Overall this is a really great system.

The good, The Bad and not quite Uglyby - October 8, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I actually bought the 600II at Best Buy for $499. This is a bargain given the sound quality. The system would be great if left to the receiver and speakers alone. Problem areas are the DVD player. As other users have mentioned, the cd/dvd player does not have the capability to play enhanced cds. I spoke with JBL tech supprt and they said there should be a remedy for the cd/dvd problem(s) in 2-4 weeks. I am a little concerned since a previous commentator mentioned that these were existing problems in June (on the 600 none the less) and still nothing seems to have been done to correct the problem. The remote also leaves functionality behind for space age looking design. Give me clunky and functional over sleek and useless anyday. If you are spending the $799+ get yourselves the actual components and put a system together. For me, I will spend the next few days deciding to whether to return the unit or not (especially for the price I paid).

Good sound. Bad DVD. REALLY BAD Remoteby - October 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The sound is great. Of course, I am running full sized speakers for the forward channels, so that probably makes a lot of difference. The DVD player leaves a lot to be desired. Discs must be in absolutely perfect condition to be played. (Havn't found a rental yet that would play all the way through) The DVD is slower than, well, it's just really, really slow. The worst part though is the remote control. While the control itself is okay, JBL uses some sort of propritary IR system or something. I havn't found a universal remote that could run it yet. Not even ones with a 'learning' function. The 'universal' remote that comes witht the unit won't control popular cable boxes (Scientific Atlanta), and a lot of functions for my TV aren't implemented. Oh well, I guess it's a good thing that I have a huge coffee table for all the remotes I need to have.

Pro Pack II - Hard To Beat!by - September 11, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Have had the ProPack II for about six months--very pleased. Found it simple to set up, and easy to operate. Subwoofer shines, but I replaced the front speakers with towers for improved mid-range--big improvement! The little guys are just fine for surround. MP3s, CD-Rs--no problem. Manual as understandable as any other. Remote isn't my favorite, but that's just getting kind of picky. If you're not pleased with the ProPack II, you're probably not going to like any HTIB.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: The system at B B is a great price. There are a few catches. There is no optical input on the DVD yet the reciever has one. I setup the whole HT and the darn DVD player was defective. It wouldnt power up or open player.Test the player at the shop. The sound is superior and a bit confusing to setup sound modes. This is a two person job. Good deal overall if the DVD player was made with quality.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I actually like the units, mammoth as they are, but was like-wise bummed (as I read others are) that it fails to play mp3's and CDR's despite the advertising that is *does* play them (read the manual, if you run a line from your PC to your Receiver.. duh!) My DVD player skipped and skipped and skipped so I took it back and back and back (it's out this time for 6 weeks while Best Buy ships it someplace else to have their "technitions" look at it) and occasionally, but consistently just stops playing DVD's or CD's and gives me "Disc Error" messages. I hope this can get resolved, otherwise I'll be returning it and upscaling to something mo' better.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought a refurbished system from the manufacturer this Christmas and got it for a little over half price. I think this is the best home audio system I've ever listened to and considering how much I paid for it I am very pleased. Sure it won't play CD-R's (as noted on the package) but it does play cd-rw's, which arn't that much more expensive these days and are of superior quality to CD-R's in both use and life-span. I am very happy with my purchase.

NO CR-R'sby - January 12, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: No CD-R compatability? Why even bother in this day and age. I agree, this is a quality system for the most part. However, I like my music catalogued the way I like it and put everything on CD-R's. Let's face it, B-movies and B-side songs have something in common. Imagine my surprise when the JBL system couldn't play CD-R's. Sure it handles CD-RW's (which are a pain and 10X more expensive than CD-R's), but even sub $100 DVD players can play CD-R's. Had to take it back so sad.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: Pearl Harbor! Bought this system last week...hooked it up this past weekend, and played first DVD last night. Just like the sales person told me...will sound fair on radio, good on CD, but incredible on a DVD - hence the name HTIB (Home Theater in a Box). P.s. On sale at Best Buy right now = $799! Bottom line, and I have read all the other opinions inlcuding the one from a person that sells these, presuably in a big store somewhere between the PS/2's and the dishwashers...you can't pass judgement on that set-up...but in a 20'x30' game-room, speakers properly set-up...WOW!

Have you actually listened to this?by - December 25, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I sell these speakers and let me tell you how bad they really are. For one, in a room any bigger than a shoe box they start to produce gaps in the sound field, nd begin to sound tiny. For DVD movies these speakers are ok if all you want is big rumbles and explosions but for any serious listening you will have bettr luck with a boo box from JVC. If you are looking for a real quality budget system go with the paradigm 90 system. Honestly sometimes I wonder how the people at Cnet even have jobs, when they give reviews like this...
