"Great product for average family home theater; excellent value."

4.5 stars  | on by zivfam

Pros

Sleek design; 1000 watts power; decent subwoofer for movie effects; great overall sound; excellent DVD playback; easy to set up; ideal for a family home theater

Cons

The remote can be confusing (though my 14 yr. old seemed to know it instinctivly!); comes with 22 guage speaker wire, best to upgrade for improved sound

After years of procrastinating, I was talked into shopping for a Home Theater. We have a Phillips 60" HDTV and looked for something to enhance family viewing of broadcasts and DVD's. My son spotted the JVC TH-C5 at a store and we researched it on the web, comparing features, design and value--it seemed to be a winner. (The TH-C5 is part of the new TH series from JVC offering various features and designs within the series; this unit is the middle of the pack.)
The unit is well packaged and protected in the box, so there should be no damage from shipping. The speakers and receiver/DVD are well designed for a slim, silver-toned updated look. Set up was easier than I thought it would be. I did upgrade to 16 guage speaker wire having learned my lesson with my first expensive stereo set up in college. I KNOW the upgrade improved the sound quality--but it is decent enough if you choose to use the enclosed speaker wire.
We listened to several AM and FM stations to see how they sounded, then played a classical and rock CD and were very pleased with the overall stereo sound. To test the Home Theater aspect, my wife chose 'Jurassic Park' and we were blown away by the image (I did use component cable) and especially the sound! The subwoofers T-Rex 'thump' and the surround sound rain and insect sounds made the movie truly come alive in our living room!
I realize that this may not be a unit that a true A/V-phile would choose, but it is a fantastic unit--at a great price--for a family home theater. And I'll bet there are lot more of 'us' than 'them' anyway!

"nothing else compared...(personal opinion)"

5 stars  | on by deanero

Pros

it played just about any type of cd i put into the cd player, 5 disk cd changer, 1000 watts which actually served me well after i hooked up a second subwoofer, powered everything with ease and bumped

Cons

it gave out after the three year warranty that we got with it

Summary

if i had the money to buy another one, i would hesitate to do so again...i bought it at best buy and while there, i tested quite a few even to their peak power and this one seemed to have one of the best quality and level of power ... Read full review

if i had the money to buy another one, i would hesitate to do so again...i bought it at best buy and while there, i tested quite a few even to their peak power and this one seemed to have one of the best quality and level of power so i decided on this too because of the 400 dollar budget that i pushed to 500 dollars for the warranty
