Good overall quality and value (marred by fan)
Pros: 1-Good entry level unit. 2-DTS and high quality 16:9 compression. 3-Good features
Cons: 1-Noisy fan. 2-Limited inputs. 3-Small front panel display
Review: I have had this unit for 4 months now and overall this in not a bad first HTIB.
This is essentially JVC's entry level HTIB with the single DVD/CD capacity and lower output than their more expensive models. It is similar to TH-S2 which seems to differ only in the type of rear surround speakers. The TH-S2 has forward firing speakers whereas the TH-S3 has omni-directional.
The overall unit is advertised at 325 watts, with each of the 6 speakers rated at an output of 52 watts (total 312). In some of the literature it states that the power of the subwoofer is 70 watts. This differential is based on the impedence that the output is measured at (6 ohms as opposed to 8 ohms).
The volume control display increases to a maximum value of 70. This is not tied to the rated output. It is simply an arbritrary scale. The fan kicks in at "30". Depending on room size this presents a problem or not. In smaller rooms this will be acceptable, in larger rooms less so. The problem is that in the very quiet passages of a movie soundtrack the fan noise is noticable and distracting. The sound is fairly high pitched. If the reciever/DVD player was in an enlcosed cabinet it would not be noticeable.
Other than this weakness the unit is good quality and good value. Having said this, if I knew (no reviews) about the fan noise level prior to purchase I would have bought a different unit.

Noisey internal fan is too loud
Pros: Solid construction, nice remote and big feature list
Cons: The whole product is ruined by the very loud internal fan that is so lous you have to turn the volume way up to drown it out. And no, mine isn't a faulty one!
