Onkyo HT-S580 (discontinued)

Onkyo HT-S580

Entered CNET Catalog: 04/05/2005

SKU: HT-S580

Manufacturer: Onkyo USA

Manufacturer description

With a deficit of receiver/speaker packages that blend into your home both spatially and audibly - and deliver with the power and accuracy when it's needed most - Onkyo continues to provide with the release of the HT-S580 home entertainment 5.1-channel receiver/speaker package. With the HT-S580 supplying 100 watts per channel into its six channels, most would be satisfied. Look a little deeper and you will find that time-proven technologies, like WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) and Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry, show that the real power benefit lies in power that can be harnessed without distortion. Also, an H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply) transformer ensures there is power on hand for audio peaks and 192 kHz/24-bit DACs preserve the quality of the incoming signal. The 5.1-channel speakers have been designed to complement the receiver's drive power. Once again, quality, affordability and performance win.

CNET editors' review

  • Reviewed on: 04/21/2005
Our opinion of el cheapo home-theater systems went up a couple of notches after we spent a little quality time with Onkyo's 2005 budget model, the HT-S580. The HTIB retails for a mere $299, but its shapely satellites, its full-size subwoofer, and its component-grade 5.1 A/V receiver look like they collectively go for at least $100 more. And the sound quality for both home theater and music is more upscale than that of most HTIBs in this price class.

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more.

The Onkyo HT-S580 system features four satellites, a dedicated center-channel speaker, a substantial subwoofer, and a fully appointed A/V receiver. The plastic-bodied satellites are almost completely covered by shapely rounded grilles, an elegant styling touch that distinguishes the 8-inch-tall satellites from the more typical pint-size, cheap-looking competition. The curvy 4.25-inch-wide center speaker carries over the same look, and the speakers' backsides are fitted with keyhole slots and threaded inserts to simplify wall mounting.

The dark gray subwoofer is constructed from medium-density fiberboard, a major improvement over plastic cabinet posers we see packed with other econo systems. It weighs 17.2 pounds and measures 9.1 inches wide, 17.1 high, and 15.5 deep.

The S580's speaker package is pretty darn impressive for a $299 HTIB, and the A/V receiver's look and feel is comparable to standalone models' costing that much. Its substantial weight (19.4 pounds) speaks to its robust build quality. Setup chores are pretty straightforward--we had the S580 up and running in less than 20 minutes. No complaints about the remote, either; its buttons are nicely organized and partially backlit, so it's easy to use in dimly lit rooms.

The S580 doesn't include a DVD player, but you probably have one anyway.

The receiver boasts six 100-watt channels and a full complement of Dolby and DTS surround modes, and their processing is expedited with a set of 192kHz/24-bit digital converters--pretty upscale for a $299 HTIB! Another bonus: if you ever want to upgrade to better speakers, the receiver's versatile crossover options--60Hz/80Hz/100Hz/120Hz or 150Hz--will aid in optimizing their sound quality.

Connectivity is adequate for small home theaters, but don't expect to wire up too many components for digital surround sound beyond a DVD player and a gaming system. You get four inputs and two outputs for video, two digital audio inputs (one optical, one coaxial), and two inputs and one output for stereo. A/B speaker switching is onboard for the option of multiroom audio, a rarity in budget systems.

On a side note, all the speaker connectors are spring-clip types, not the five-way binding posts you'd see on mid- and high-end receivers. And we should make clear that video-switching services cover only composite-video connections; you'll have to run S-Video or component-video cables directly from your DVD player or cable box to your TV. The receiver also lacks a line-level RCA subwoofer jack, but you can still hook up powered subs with speaker-level connections.

As for the speakers, not only are all of them genuine two-way designs with 3.2-inch woofers and 0.75-inch tweeters, but the center speaker also conforms to the classic woofer/tweeter/woofer arrangement. The 8-inch passive subwoofer runs off one of the receiver's 100-watt amplifiers.

The Cube Zero DVD used a densely textured soundtrack to create tension. This psycho thriller's grisly sounds, ghostly voices, and spectacular percussion accents sweeping around our home theater kept us on the edge of our seats. The scenes inside the Cube's master control center were always accompanied by the sound of water dripping from a far-flung corner of the room, and the Onkyo HT-S580 successfully mapped every square foot of the space. Dialogue was detailed and full-bodied. And the subwoofer's foundation of deep bass rumblings added a palpable foundation to the horror show.

The heavy metal thunder coursing through Metallica's St. Anger DVD didn't unglue the S580's baby satellites--this just might be the most powerful system we've ever heard for this kind of money. It's just the ticket for dorm rooms, but this budget kit can comfortably fill even midsize home theaters with sound.

The S580 didn't falter when we played all sorts of CDs, and Bright Eyes's trippy acoustic masterpiece, I'm Wide Awake, sounded naturally sweet. Guitars and fiddles had a woody glow, and Conor Oberst's ethereal duet with Emmylou Harris didn't elicit stumbles from the perky satellites. The subwoofer's dexterity was obvious when we played Morphine's The Night CD. The bass/baritone sax/drum trio dishes up heavyweight sounds, and the HT-S580's sure-footed bass locked onto the band's funky grooves. Yes, the sound suffered when we cranked the volume too high, but that's true of most HTIBs. All in all, Onkyo's HT-S580 trumps the competition in the sound-per-dollar sweepstakes.

Nothing lacking

Pros: Price, sound, ease of use

Cons: Haven't found any yet

Review: Have this set up in a small 14x18 room, sound is amazing for a sub $300 HTIB. Compared to other systems in this price range features and sound blow them away.

AMAZING!!!!!

Pros: Unbelievable sound!

Cons: No DVD player, but c'mon who doesn't have a DVD player.

Review: My fiancee got me this system for christmas last year and it absolutly blew me away. This was the first home theater system for me so it took me a while to figure out how to get the calibration levels right but once I did I could not have been happier. Excellent system and not to pricy either. I would recommend this system to anyone.

Best System under $400

Pros: Great sound. Easy setup

Cons: Only 2 digital inputs

Review: Bought this system a month ago. Using it with Samsung DLP. Set up was a snap. Easy and obvious. Quality of sound is unbelievable. Very satisfied. Will recommend to all my friends. One downside. Only 2 digital inputs.

Good system so far.

Pros: Quality and performance seem to above par.

Cons: Advanced setup seems a little tricky. Receiver was bigger than I had thought. Barely fits into my TV stand. Navigating the remote will take some getting used to.

Review: I was looking to get a decent system for a relatively low price. I read the Cnet review by the editor and the rating that this system was give and decided to look more into it. The customer reviews were also helpful. This system has lived up to the reviews so far. I have only had it for a day or so but my initial evaluation is good. First was the size of the unit. The speakers were what I expected as was that of the subwoofer. The speakers look relatively small (check the measurements, approx. 6"??)but that can be a good thing if you want the stealth look. The receiver was larger than I thought. When I attempted to put it in my T.V. stands receiver slot it barely clears the top. It is also heavier than estimated and i'm not sure I should continue to have it sitting on a glass shelf of my Ikea T.V. stand but it's holding. It resembles something that would cost more. My only other minimal complaint is the look of the subwoofer. It's a good size but the look and styling of it is basic. It's just a big square next to my stand. Performance wise this system seems to be a good deal. The sub already makes a difference in my movie watching. It is noticeable even at mid volume. The front speakers sound good right out of the box. I actually haven't tried to turn the volume up past 55 yet due to the fact that by the time I got it all set up it was pretty late at night and my neighbor probably wouldn't appreciate it yet. I ran the movies "Hero" and "I,Robot" at about 45-50 and the sound quality was great. The voice sounded a little off from center but that could just be me and/or be corrected with some adjustments. At times I actually had to turn it down. The rear speakers also add to the experince. Out of the box they didn't sound great but that can be adjusted to your preference. I did increase the decible level to +6 (max. is +/-12) for the fronts. Connection is simple. Color coded. There are plenty of inputs to go into the receiver and plenty of formats to choose. The advanced setup for adjusting volume levels and calibrating the system seems to be a little tricky and involved but if you're not into all of that then you'll be happy with the plug and play formats. This also has preset audio setups that you can try and play around with. The remote is a little awkward for me but once I get the system set up and my components fully intergrated I will probably use a my universal remote or my cable box remote. There are still alot of features that I have not tried yet like running my entire system (cable box, dvd, plasma tv)thru this, adjusting the entire system, preset sound configurations, cd's, and radio tuner but that adds to system for me. I would say for a decent price (I paid slightly over $300 at circuit city out the door) this system works good so far. Not mind blowing yet but just good. By the way I have it in my medium sized living room which has one side opened to a dinning room and computer area. Oh and one more note is that when you switch to the different audio settings and inputs the receiver makes a clicking sound. It makes the system seem old school becuase it doesn't just switch silently like my 1990 vcr did but I can live with it. That just seemed wierd. Also the buttons seem old school. I'm satisfied though.
Updated
I've been able to use this system for about a work or so and I really like it considering the features and the price. Sound quality is up to par. It does get pretty loud for its size. I've used it for my dvd's and also used it to play music. It works well for both. Sorting thru what preset style to use is cool but I haven't found a use for all of them. Surround sound is good. Subwoofer is great but can be over powering for some. You can adjust it. Turned up it sounds really loud and I haven't yet noticed any distortion problems. Good product for price.

Higher quality than I expected. Very happy.

Pros: Excellent sound, music, tv and especially dvd's

Cons: difficult getting cable box, dvd and tv all on the same page.

Review: I was looking for a good quality HTIB for around $200 that would sound good playing music and movies mainly. I'm glad I spent a few more bux than I wanted to. This system is excellent.

Easily worth the money

Pros: great sound, affordable

Cons: no component video switching means stuck in remote hell

Review: I was looking for a budget HTIB for my bedroom as I already have an excellent system for my family room. It was simple to set up and the remote is intuitive. I would suggest changing to bigger wires for connection, rather than the wires that come w/the system. Hands down more than enough room filling sound for my moderate sized bedroom 17x17. I am pleased with the purchase

Exceeded my expectations for a HTIB system...

Pros: Very good sound quality for the price

Cons: None so far...

Review: My sales guy typically sells very high-end home theatre systems. He told me that this Onkyo system is probably the best of the Home-Theatre-In-a-Box systems... I don't disagree. The sound quality is excellent. The bass is rich, but not overpowering. Normal 2.1 CD music is transformed into really convincing surround sound. This system has definitely exceeded my expectations. I will definitely recommend this to friends.

Blew my mind out!!

Pros: Incredible sound quality for the price; Can play Blow-Your-Mind-Out loud.

Cons: Sound quality suffers a little bit when played too loud

Review: I bought the Onkyo ht-s580 for it's good sound quality review from cnet and also from other positive user reviews. I've had it for about 3 months now and until recently, I thought I had played the system loud on Gran Turismo 4 at about 50 (it's maximum volume is 75). Then yesterday, I played Greenday's American Idiot CD and I thought I would see how loud this little baby could go. OH MY GOODNESS!!! At a volume of only 65, I thought that if I played any louder, my brain would be blown so far ot of my head that I'd have to take a trip to China to retrieve it. I never knew that you could get a system that preforms this well for around $300. Sure, at that volume the sound wasn't exactly stellar, but below the brain-explosion volume level, the sound is incredible for the price. It's very clean with powerful bass, rich, full midtones, and clear but not shrill treble. If you're looking for the best system for the money and sound is your main concern, look no further

The Best Inexpensive Home Theater In-A-Box

Pros: High quality receiver, decent speakers (plenty of volume), powerful subwoofer, good 5.1 TV mode

Cons: Included speaker wire is low quality, no S-video or component video switching on receiver, only 2 digital inputs

Review: I have owned the Onkyo HT-S580 for five months now and am still very happy with it. I wanted an affordable apartment home theater, so I combined the Onkyo HT-S580 with a 32" TV and a DVD player with optical digital audio-out. I also replaced the included speaker wire with 16 gauge wire I bought at Radio Shack for $30. Watching any DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 sounds great! Just make sure you connect the digital audio-out on your DVD player to either the optical or coaxial digital audio-in on the receiver and remember to configure your DVD player to output a digital audio signal. My parents have a higher quality and much more expensive home theater setup (Yamaha receiver, Harmon Kardon speakers) that I have spent extensive time listening to. Comparitively, the Onkyo HT-S580 puts out decent quality sound, but not quite as clear as you would get with a more expensive home theater speaker package and receiver. This can be expected as the Onkyo HT-S580 is a home theater in-a-box and is very affordable.

The receiver is the best part of the system, containing many inputs for all of your audio devices. Because it lacks a built in DVD player, this allows for upgrades in the future. The receiver contains many different listening modes that turn stereo audio input into a 5.1 signal. I particularly like the 5.1 TV listening mode. I have cable and connected the audio-out on my TV to a stereo input on the receiver. With the 5.1 TV listening mode, Sports Center on ESPN and other TV shows sound pretty good. On the bad side, only two of the inputs (optical and coaxial) allow for true digital sound, but this is only a problem if you want to have true digital surround sound from more than two sources. The other downfall of the receiver is that it lacks S-video or component video switching, although it does allow low-quality composite video switching. This is mildly annoying, but not a feature I would expect on such an inexpensive unit.

The speakers combined with the receiver are of decent quality and have a keyhole on the back for easy wall mounting. I really like the large center channel speaker, responsible for most of the dialogue in movies with 5.1 digital audio. The subwoofer has plenty of power for me and shakes my whole apartment if I turn the volume up past 32 on a song with heavy bass.

Best Home Theater I Have Had

Pros: Clear sound, multiple video inputs, very easy to setup

Cons: Sub woofer is powered from the reciever, no s-video inputs only composite

Review: This is only the second HTIB system that I buy. It blows away the pansonic that I had. The sound is crystal clear no distortion. I can not see my self buying anything else for my small living room.

Great system for the money!!!

Pros: Great Price, Value, good sound..

Cons: Reciver is a bit tricky, Sound isn't as loud with DVD's/Game systems as it is with CD's

Review: This is a nice system i got it on sale at Radio Shack near my work for 200 Dollers on sale... I hooked it up and wow i was happy how good the sound was! Blows my last Sony System away.. Only wired things is When you play CD's (for example i have a Xbox) on the system its louder and sounds more powerful then when you put a DVD/Game in then you have to turn it up a bit more then CD's... If you don't want to spend to much for a system i would highley suggest this one!

Cons: doesn't remember last subwoofer setting

Review: love it!!!!!!!!!

Great Value! Great Features! Average Sound

Pros: Good integration for Ipod; Terrific Value; Good connectivity

Cons: Average sound; moderate power; silver casing

Review: This system is pretty good. It's available refurbished direct from Onkyo for next to nothing (I think it's $120 or $130). Onkyo has a good system for connecting the Ipod. I can control the Ipod with the Onkyo remote, so I can remotely control it but I don't need an extra controller to do so. The speakers that come with the system are average at best. At 65W per channel, you're not going to be blown away, but for the price, it's hard to complain. The subwoofer is set up a little backwards with the connectivity and the opening for the subwoofer on opposite sides, so you either lower the sound quality by turning the speaker into the room or you see all the wires. The wires provided are low quality, but that's par for the course. With composite and component I/O, this can do everything you want it to. Overall, I like it a lot for the price...I might get another.

WOW!!! WHAT A DEAL!!!

Pros: Fantastic sound, great features, easy to install, digital and optical input, PHENOMENAL BASS

Cons: For the price I see no cons!!!

Review: I was in the market for a budget HTIB. I was honestly expecting less than adequate sound for the price I was willing to pay. What I wanted was something to enjoy dvd concerts, and the occasional movie. I had gone into the process thinking that anything would be better than nothing. I plan on making a more serious home theater system in the next three years, for the time being I was not willing to spend more than 200.00. How's that for a tight budget!!!?? I did some preliminary research before going to the stores to listen. I had pretty much decided that I was going to buy the Sony HT-DDW670 if it sounded even half way decent. I do however, always listen to everything at the store/stores that are around my price point. The day I bought this I only went to one store. I went to Frys electronics in Plano, TX. I listened to the Sony, which sounded decent and looked decent. I listened to a Yamaha, which sounded a little less decent, but looked good(it was 100.00 more). I finally listened to the Onkyo. I couldn't walk away. It sounded great in a very big store. It had all kinds of features that the Sony didn't have. It looked great, better than tan the Sony. THE PRICE WAS 199.00. I bought it without blinking an eye. I brought it home and installed it in about 30 min. The wires included with it are all color coded and more than adequate for this system. The room it is in is a square room, roughly 17x17. My bed rests against a wall. The woofer sits on the floor about 16 ft away. When my head is resting against the back wall, my head vibrates....substanitally (with a lot more volume left)!! The center and front speakers produce clear sounds with crisp tweeters and full mids. The reciever is attractive with better than average features. What an AMAZING value, from a reputable manufacturer. I feel like they had this system mis-priced. There is just no way I got this much system for 199.00. If your looking for a HTIB for cheap, I highly recommend this ONKYO!!! I can't figure out why CNET rated this as Good. They scored the sound an 8, for the money it's a 10. Design 9, and features 9.

Fantastic value

Pros: Great sound for the money

Cons: none for me

Review: Bought this system after reading the Cnet review. I listen to music more than watching DVDs. Couldn't be more delighted. Friend who is a musician was wowed by ability to play all kinds of classical music. Jazz and other catagories sound great as well. FM is excellent, and I'm really enjoying movies.

Great value for the money.

Very Pleased

Pros: Good Price, Sounds Great, Onkyo Quality

Cons: Not enough digital inputs

Review: This is the 2nd HTIB system I've bought, but my first Onkyo product. I'm very happy with it and sounds fantastic....once I figured out how to get my existing DVD player to put out a digital signal.
