Pros Value for money..good punch from the sub..features are the best for the price.
Cons Lacks mid range at times, surround speakers are bad..really bad., amp may get damaged if used at high volumes for long duration.
Summary It's a good entry level HTIB, compared to others, good features to use..
Pros Great staring system. Good clean, crisp sound on the mid to high end. Has 4 HDMI's.
Cons Lack lusty bass end. I have pair of old Advent Tower speakers that I believe have a fuller sound than this system. The bottom end will sound full once the sub-woofer kicks in. But if you're listening to something that has a light bass in it, you won't
Summary Good amp. Light on full soundness unless played at a higher level. Being a professional musician, I know the bottom end is weak, but I was under the impression all these newer speaker systems have a fuller sound than all the older speakers. I still have my old 5.1 speaker system with Advent mains and Polk surrounds. I may just hook them up back up again and sell these speaker package. I have tried the different audio settings on the receiver (rock, jazz, pop) to listen to the differences, but it's still light on fullness.
Pros 7.1-9.1 channel system, loud with crisp sound
Cons Weak speakers, poor customer service, deceiving marketing
Summary Center and Tower speakers DO NOT! come with 2x 4" cone woofers. I shined a flashlight though the glued shut grill and there is only one 4" woofer. Onkyo's website, manual, retailers and review sites all state that it should come with two.
Poor Onkyo service - Hold times are bad and they don't seem to care for customer issues. Feels like an outsourced product support company. Contacted Customer relations 4 times and all they do is give me the phone run around, passing me back and forth to 5 different operators then a voice mail box, worst off I still haven't received a call back from them.
Subwoofer - Cannot handle full range of bass from a test disc. They installed a 4-ohm 80w paper woofer to a 135w amp that can peek at 300w. This poor matchup will cause your subwoofer to bottom out with vibrating thuds even while watching movies. I've tested this with 2 brand new sub boxes with the power setting set to the half way and tuned with audyssey.
Overall I'm still slightly satisfied with my purchase, for only $500 bucks this is still a nice starter setup. Even if this was an outstanding system, Onkyo had proven to me they are a deceiving company who doesn't care about customer service. Fact is I would never deal with this company or one like it again and for anyone who cares about honesty and service I would recommend you stay away.
First receiver was defective and had to exchange out. One of the surround sound channels had a constant static sound.
Pros tuner has a ton of flexibility and power for a beginner set up, 2EQ rocks
Cons the speakers sound like crap (pardon my french), it negates buying a "system"
main/center very inefficient, total lack of mid-bass, the sound "plasticy"
rear/back no comment they are so bad
sub- this was actually OK
Summary I replaced the speakers with some decent Polk ones and considered the Onkyo speaker "system" a total loss for this purchase
