Pros The whole system is HDMI 1.3 compliant with Deep Color and X.V. Color as well as the Dolby and DTS HD Blu-Ray codecs.
Can upscale any audio to 6.1 or 7.1 surround sound.
Amazing speakers and subwoofer that output stellar sound quality.
Cons The Zone 2 features are a little hard to figure out at first.
Some of the initial set up is a little confusing.
Summary This system is amazing! It has almost every feature I was looking for in a HTIB (Home Theater in a Box).
The receiver is capable of up to 9.2 surround sound when the two front high speakers are added or 7.2 surround with two speakers in another room using the zone 2 feature. The receiver not only features the Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio codecs in bitstream and LPCM, it also features DTS Neo:6, DTS Express, DTS, Dolby Digital, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, Dolby Pro Logic IIz, DTS-HD High Resolution.
The Speaker System:
The Speaker System that comes with this receiver is very good. All 7 speakers and the subwoofer are very well made and can output exceptional sound quality that will fill your room. The Center and Front left and right speakers are basically the same speaker types. They feature 1 tweeter and 2 woofers ( 1 high frequency and 1 low frequency) in each speaker. The 4 surround speakers however only feature 1 tweeter and 1 woofer for high frequency sound. The subwoofer is a powered system and has a 10' driver that points straight down at the ground to give your room exceptional rumble and low frequency sound. All of the speakers sound very good and all work well with each other as sound passes from one speaker to the other. This system also comes with an auto calibration mic that will basically do all the work for you. Throughout the test it will ask you to set the mic in three different positions in your room and it will calibrate your speakers to give the best sound quality and volume possible at each spot. The auto calibration sometimes turns the subwoofer volume down a little too much but you can always turn it back up.
This system has thoroughly surprised me and fulfilled all of my expectations for a surround system. One of the cool features that I like about this system is that you can change the name for any input. So when you press DVD/BD button on the remote you can have the receiver say whats actually plugged into that input, and in my case it says PS3. Also another nice addition to this system is the Ipod dock that comes with it for free. They are normally around $100 dollars but you get it scotch free with this system. I would recommend this system to anyone who is looking to upgrade their home theater system and want to upgrade their speakers as well.
Pros Ample HDMI inputs for all HD equipment
Very powerful, loud, clear sounding
A plethora of features including all audio formats
Sleek elgant looking system despite being larger than most, satellite speakers on steroids
HDMI 1.3 with deep colour
Cons Speaker wire provided was comparible to dental floss, upgraded to 14g wire which just fit spring loaded inputs on reverse side of speakers. 12g wire will not fit. Also used banana plugs for receiver for clean/tight connections. No further complaints.
Summary This is an awesome system with boat-loads of power especially while listening to DTS-HD & True HD Blu-ray formats; huge difference from old DVD sources. Set it up in a 26x15 ft room and boy does it fill that room with sound. It's true what they say (audio is half the experience of movie entertainment). Upgraded my old sony dream HTIB system with no regrets. Would highly recommend this system to anyone who is in the market for a high powered quality system that won't break the bank. Onkyo is truly a quality product!
Pros 4 HDMI In's 1 Out. <3
The look of the tallboy speakers with a projection setup is amazing.
Speakers are not as ugly and boxy as people say they are. The look of a 7.1 is amazing. Especially the glossy tops and sides of the front spea
Cons Only 2 optical inputs. (Not a big deal)
Summary I ordered this system because my sister has the same one, and it was amazing in her house, imagine it in my bedroom! The sound quality is GREAT the sub is VERY powerful and I love the receivers video inputs. This system is for anyone with multiple game systems and wants there house to SHAKE during a movie. The sub hits so hard you feel it outside of your house.
Pros Nothing good to say about them other than there is no wait when you call customer service, they achieve this by just telling you no over and over again until you hang up
Cons Sub-woofer blew two weeks after purchase, made from Canada which explains a lot.
Summary Bought it and two weeks later the Sub blew. I had to ship it to a company that does their repair work. when they received the package it was damage (UPS always damage packages) and UPS denied a claim as usual. When I called Onkyo their customer service was of little help and rude, they said it was my fault and if UPS denied a claim then I should have packaged it better. Problem is if the piece of junk would have worked longer than a week I wouldn't had to ship it off to begin with. Will never buy anything from this company again.
Pros Great feature list that requires minimal action by the user to get the most out of it. Audio quality is great, video quality is very good. Decoding is great. Speakers are good for a bundled package - esp an HTIB.
Cons Sub is weak. Output of the receiver/amp makes upgrading speakers a painful process. It only puts out 1080p via HDMI pass-through. Speakers appear 2-way but are 1way (quality remains good though).
Summary This HTIB does everything that I bought it for with the exception of providing satisfactory bass/low frequency sound. I now find it very difficult to find replacement speakers for the receiver, but I will keep the receiver because of the great features and easy operation. I am replacing and remounting the original surround speakers above my fronts to allow for true playback of Dolby Pro Logic IIz, which this receiver supports (and provides EXTRA outputs specifically for the additional front-high speakers), as well as 7.1.
