Pros: Quite possibly the best sounding system I have heard for under $700. Heck.. I've heard $1500 systems that don't compete.
Cons: Full size system with hefty speakers. Won't fit well in small den or bedroom.

I've had my system since March '03 and love it. Only complaint is how slow the DVD changer responds to commands. Sound is fantastic. I would have waited for the HT-S767C had I known that the system would be discontinued, make the DVD a six disc, and is lowered in price by 200 bucks.(MSRP $800) Overall I'm still VERY happy with my $875.00 total investment.

Bought this one week ago. Did not have the room to store al l the large components but managed. Setup was not that easy (novice) Bought all the right cables but needed to read the book to make it work. ( i hate that )It does sound very good, even my wife likes it. The speaker wires that it ships with should go right into the garbage can. Not only are they thin, they do not have the banana ends on them for easy connection. Why would they do that? I have Two mach2 speakers that i purchased years ago that just rock. Hooked up as the front speakers for this system and WOW is it overwhelming. Gotta love dd and hd. List price at abc was 999. Told the guy i seen it on the internet for 799 and he abliged. Great Deal.

I've had the system for a week now and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Nothing can come close to the value and performance with the Onkyo HT755. As a whole, the system seems to sound just as good as systems thousands more. The fact that it had DTS-ES and Dolby Digital EX played a big part in my decision. Now I have all the latest technology in one nice system. From what I've seen, the extra surround speaker really makes a big difference. As well, I now have a progressive scan DVD and all the speakers for 6.1 sound, so I'm set for a long time in my eyes. The first DVDs I played with it were Saving Private Ryan, The Fast and the Furious, and Twister. Overall, I was amazed by the sound quality. The sound is crystal clear at any volume. For an 8 inch powered sub, I had yet to find a movie soundtrack that this sub could not handle. It plays the tornados in Twister, the engines in Fast and the Furious, and the explosions in Saving Private Ryan without breaking a sweat. The system itself took 1-2 hours to hook up, which included unhooking all my old equipment as well. Everything is color coded for convenience, yet I will probably upgrade the cables that came with it. I had the store where I bought it throw in an optical cable for free, as the coaxial digital cable looked very thin and cheap. The same is with the speaker wire, it's very thin. I used old monster cable with the front three speakers, and will eventually do so with the rear. The subwoofer cable that came with the system is very thin as well, I never used it. One day, I will upgrade to real subwoofer cable, yet now I have a monster RCA cable hooked up to the sub which does the job for now. The receiver and DVD player seem to be very high quality products. It took me about an hour to figure out different surround modes and DSP. I feel this system is much better at movie soundtrack reproduction than general CD music. I have been playing around with the DSP settings, and am still trying to find one that I really like. As well, the on screen options are easy to use for the receiver, and each speaker can be individually tuned. The DVD has MP3 capability, which I haven't tried out yet. The only thing I don't like about the DVD player is that you have to select "CD play" to listen to music. That's fine, but with the changer, if the next disc is a DVD, and "CD play" is still on, then the player freezes, and you can't turn "CD play" off without turning everything on and off. I did a lot of research (especially Cnet and ecoustics.com), and from what I read this one is the best. As well, I demoed it in the store, and was very pleased. It even ended up sounding better in my own home. So overally, I got what I paid for and then some. I was considering buying separate components until I heard this system. And actually, it is a full component system. I paid $850 for the system, and if you look at the price of each component individually, you're getting a steal. The receiver retails for about $500, the DVD changer $300, and the speaker system $300 (and you get the rear surround speaker). I am still amazed at the sound quality of the speakers for that price, don't ask me how Onkyo does it. I feel I know a lot about home theatre equipment, yet I wouldn't call myself a true audiophile. But from what I've heard from this system, and seen the abundant features, I would recommend this system to anyone who wants excellent sound quality, and all the latest technology in one box for a price that will blow you away.

Take it for what it's worth, but reading through the reviews is what sold me on this home theatre system. I went to a local store & listened to a lower end Onkyo system & it blew me away. I was on the edge of my seat, ready to go out & buy a bose system. I'm glad I didn't.. This system has incredible sound quality!! A little reading to figure out the settings for what you want but well worth it. I cranked it with a CD & there was zero distortion including the sub. For a smaller sub it's very clean & lets you feel the power during movies. I shopped around for about 2 months & was very skeptical about an internet sale not hearing the system, but it was well worth it. I would recomend this to any one of my friends or family members..

I did a fair amount of research and wanted to get a system that would outlast my current TV and be OK for any TV I might buy in a few years. I think this system does that. It has *all* the features, it sounds great, and the DVD player looks great. The universal remote is working just fine. Speaker wires are color coded and long. It is a bit daunting if you are non-technical, since the instructions are dense and in a small font. But they are pretty good for stereo instructions. My only nitpicks are - I wish it had a TV antenna on the receiver, faster DVD changing times, and a better remote control layout (though it is not a horrible remote).

They were helpful and courteous, and when I had a couple of questions on email, they answered almost immediately. I was surprised to read elsewhere that they were less than attentive. I received my system one week after order (free shipping) on the west coast. The system itself was very easy to set up, and sounds amazing. The speakers are a bit big, but the sound you get is the tradeoff.

This home-theater are very good in quality and features. In addition, I think the speakers are in perfect size, and it look really good. I watched many movies such as XxX,the matrix and many other movies, I found the 6.1-channel sound quality exceeds the performance in many way. For example, The Matrix, sound from the gunfire are distinguish from the shells that drop to the floor, the whooping helicopter and explosion. Moreover, I hook up my computer to the CD input and play MP3, the sound was deep, clear and rich.

Have owned many home theater systems over the years. From really cheap to really expensive. This system is currently the best value for money out there. True, it is a bit bulky and heavy but the performance is excellent. Got mine for $750 over the phone after haggling a bit. Installed it in my winter lodge a few months ago and it has worked perfectly. Just saw XXX on it yesterday and it sounded as good as my $4000 system. Don't know about that comment about the optical connection, couldn't not find a reference to it on the FAQ or previous reviews.

First let me say that I?m no audiophile, but I did spend several months researching and listening to different systems before I decided on the Onkyo HT-S755DVC. I got the system hooked up a few days ago and have watched several movies and listened to a couple of CDs since. This system blows me away with the quality of sound. I had someone who installs home theater systems for a living say it sounds great and even sounded better than what he has in his house. If you are looking for a HTIB, you should seriously consider this one. It really is as good as CNET says it is, and the only reason I didn't give it a perfect score for support is because I haven't used it.

The truthby - January 4, 2003

Everyone, I want you to know the truth about this system. It is actually a nice home theater system (especially when watching a movie like windtalkers) however, the dvd player has problems. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use an optical cable for sound, use digital coaxial. My dvd player stopped when watching Braveheart then couldn't recognize any DVDs after that (I received a Disc Error message). I then took it to be repaired but they took so long because the part was backordered (A lot of people have had this problem with an onkyo dvd player) so I just sent it back to the dealer for a new dvd player. After I received the new dvd player I only use digital coaxial for sound and thus far I have not had any problems. Other than a poorly made dvd player, this system sounds great in a large room and the sound and picture of the dvd player is pretty decent. I prefer the larger speakers size (especially since they are in wood, plastic just doesn't sound the same) and I think the sub sounds great when the crossover is at 120. All in all, I rate it an 8.

This set is perfect for its intended Home Theater purpose, but it will please a primarily music listening audience as well. Review:
I purchased the Onkyo HT-S755DVC. It is large enough that it comes in four seperate boxes. It was very easy to set up and is really easy to balance out the speakers based on room setup. When folks say that the system is large I don't think you really get an appreciate for what they mean. It may not be large in comparison to 1970's vintage systems but in comparison to the satellite speaker systems you can get today it's large. The front speakers are around 14" high and the back speakers are around 9" by about 10" deep. You have to buy speaker stands to stick them on or clear off a large area of your tables. I expected the sound to really fill the room. I tuned the system and I can get the sound nice and loud and the bass nice and deep. It just doesn't have the richness of sound quality that I expected. If I had it to do over again I'd go ahead and buy something that had the satellite speakers that are easy to place around a room. I don't think I would notice the difference in sound.

I purchased this system about three weeks and could not be more pleased. The sound quality on DVD's and CD's is amazing. It was easy to setup, and the menus walk you through configuring the speakers to match your room size. I shopped around and listened to many systems in the $500- $1,000 range, and this beats them all hands down. The 5 disc progressive scan DVD player is reason enough to to spend a little extra. As mentioned, the only drawback is the surround speakers are large. But this is minor compared to the features and sound quality. Purchase this system, you will not regret it!!

Spectacular, rich CD and regular Video sounds just the beginning...by - December 11, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
It took 1 hour to set up, due to ease of color coded wires, pictoral 'cheat sheet' and clear receiver layout - although I will need to purchase longer audio wires to accommodate speaker placement in my basement space. I played CD on system's 5-disc changer and then Fantasia 2000 movie, via s-video, from mid-range JVC player and both were far beyond expectations. (The sound quality easily surpasses my Nakamichi Sound Space system with attached Woofer!) I have yet to run decent speaker wires or add decent connectors to the system - I really don't think it's necessary for everyday use, but will do it as the raw end wiring attachments mean there is no need to buy expensive connectors and splice them onto speaker wire, therefore reducing upgrade cost significantly. I am salivating at the prospect of seeing and hearing my first surround sound DVD. Lastly, there has been much talk of where to get this system cheaply. I ordered online at www.wholesaleconnection.com, received a call to confirm my shipping address (different from billing) and was told it's ship next day. True to their word, I received email with Fed-Ex tracking number and spent three days agonizingly watch it work its way from Memphis, through Newark, to New York. The system arrived earlier than their best-case prediction, factory boxed, in perfect condition. Price paid: $849.00 plus $45.00 shipping - for a box weighing well over 100 lbs! I couldn't be happier! They appear to have reasonable return policies, asking only that you call and get a pre-approval # from them. Return shipping is covered by them in most instances, assuming complaint is legitimate.

The only major complaint is the non existent AM reception even with a Turk Antenna booster. The minor complaint is the volume control 0 - 100.
