The A/V receiver included with the Onkyo HT-S770 is a near twin of the company's TX-SR502, and it's nowhere near as compact or flashy as most HTIB receivers. The 22.5-pound component measures 17.2 inches wide and 14.8 inches deep. The partially backlit remote is pretty special. It's large, yet easy to maneuver, and offers direct access to A-B speaker switching, individual speaker volume levels, and bass and treble controls. This clicker is among the best we've ever seen included with an HTIB.
Onkyo's main left and right speakers are full-size bookshelf models with rear-mounted ports, so they won't sound their best crammed into a cabinet or a bookcase. The main speakers stand 16.5 inches tall, the matching full-size center is 15.25 inches wide, and the three wall-mountable surround speakers are each 10.5 inches tall. The main front speakers weigh 12.1 pounds each, and their wood cabinets, along with those of the center or surround speakers, are more substantial than typical plastic speakers that come packed with most HTIBs. Curved grilles add a touch of spice. Finally, the subwoofer is a 30-pound beast that measures 20.3 inches tall, 10.75 inches wide, and 16.25 inches deep.
This seven-piece speaker package (SKS-HT520) is also sold separately, without a receiver, for $279. The entire HT-S770 system is available in black or silver finishes. If you don't need a 6.1 system, you can check out the HT-S670, which also has a less well-endowed receiver and main speakers.
Please note: the HT-S770 package doesn't include a DVD player, so if you need one, move on up to Onkyo's $700 list HT-S777C. It's a close cousin of the HT-S770 but includes a six-disc DVD changer. Then again, if you're on the lookout for an HTIB that delivers sweet sound and head-turning style, check out Onkyo's LS-V955, available at a suggested retail price of $1,000.
The receiver is rated at 130 watts for each of its six channels--curiously, much higher than the 75-watt-per-channel TX-SR502 receiver it so closely resembles. The 6.1-channel processing modes include Dolby EX and DTS ES. Connectivity options are excellent for an HTIB. You get two component-video inputs, four A/V inputs and two outputs, four digital inputs, two stereo ins and one out, and a full set of front-panel-mounted connections. Don't worry, Onkyo didn't forget the 5.1 SACD/DVD-Audio inputs. The speaker connectors are all heavy-duty binding posts that accept banana jacks, except for the B speaker connectors; they're spring-clip types that accept bare wire only. We've reviewed far more expensive HTIBs with single-driver (woofer-only) satellites, so we were excited to note that the Onkyo HT-S770's main left and right speakers each sport two 5.25-inch woofers and a 1-inch dome tweeter. The center speaker features a pair of 4-inch woofers flanking a 1-inch dome tweeter. The three surround speakers each use a pair of the same drivers found in the center speaker. The subwoofer features a downward-firing 10-inch woofer powered by a 220-watt amplifier. That's plenty of woof--before now, 8-inch woofers were the biggest we'd seen in this price class.
We were skeptical about the Onkyo HT-S770's hefty 130-watts-per-channel power rating, but our high-volume listening tests with the Hellboy DVD were a blast. This is the sort of DVD that falls flat on most HTIBs, but the HT-S770 rocked and rolled in all of the right places. Surround effects were seamlessly portrayed, and when we doused the lights, the six speakers' locations disappeared. Hellboy's battles with scaly evildoers were accompanied by wham-bam dynamics and room-shaking bass. We credit the 10-inch subwoofer with a big part of the HT-S770's home-theater gusto; its low-frequency oomph and definition were impressive. Yes, the system can fill a fairly large room with sound. Our DVD auditions out of the way, we ran a stack of our favorite CDs. The White Stripes' bluesy workouts on their Elephant CD definitely passed muster. When Meg White pounded away on her drums, the HT-S770 let us feel every wallop, and Jack White's thrashing guitar and vocals hit their marks. Roxy Music's Avalon CD had the sort of crisply defined bass we associate with pricier systems.
Acoustic music revealed a lack of refinement in the HT-S770's capabilities. Vocals sounded strained, pianos were a tad strident, and violins exhibited a steely edge. Even so, we'd be hard put to recommend a comparably priced HTIB that could better the Onkyo on acoustic music. OK, it's not perfect, but for sound-conscious, budget-minded buyers, the HT-S770 is the go-to choice.

Onkyo Has the Goods.....
Pros: Bone Rattling Power, Awesome Clear Sound
Cons: Supplied speaker wire is too small. Very large and heavy speakers. Reciever unit gets very hot.
I had this unit shipped; the Box is over 5 feet tall and weighs over 100 pounds. Upon opening the box, I immediately noticed it was very well packed. Onkyo knows what ole Brown can do to a box this size. The sheer size of the setup gave the impression that this HTIB means business.
In looking over the manual, connections were color coded and very straightforward. There is no guessing here, and no shortage of documentation.
The included speaker wires are sub-par. Do yourself a favor and invest in some good 16-14-gauge speaker wire. Also, if you want to make your life easier, get 5 sets of dual banana plugs, no doubt you will thank me later.
The included universal remote is, for the lack of a better word LARGE. Most of the remote is not backlit, this being a minor nuisance. I happen to have a Motorola cable receiver; Onkyo does not provide the programming code for Motorola cable units. The DVD player, TV and other equipment, I programmed easily.
I invested another $150 in speaker stands, because the front channels weigh over 12 pounds each, this called for large stands. The rear channels are about 3 pounds apiece, smaller stands was used. The active subwoofer is 30 pounds alone!
Now, firing this baby up....
I urge you, spend some time going over the user manual. Get to know the surround modes. I found that Neo6 Cinema works very well for movies and PLX Music setting is best for music. I noticed the rear channels were a bit low for my taste, so I bumped them up a few notches and voila... Saving Private Ryan came alive. Bullets were wizing by my ears, could have swore I was shot!
Next, I popped in AC/DC live in Donnington. I set the volume to 60 and my living room actually shook. No joke, no exaggeration. Crystal clear and VERY LOUD.
I believe that this unit was meant for a much larger area, but I am not complaining. After about 30 min of a 5.5 on the earthquake scale, I noticed the receiver got abnormally hot. By this, I mean, I have never had a receiver get this hot on me. I would advise a well-ventilated are for its resting area. However, it never missed a beat!
Overall, this unit had plenty of clean power. It falls short of perfect due to its included wiring, not fully backlit remote, the heat issue and sheer size. But these shortcomings are easily forgotten when you experience the sonic thunder Onkyo unleashes when you hit the power button.

Beware Melting Tweeters
Pros: Plenty of ins/outs, 6.1 instead of 5.1, great power, great bang for the buck
Cons: Un-intuitive remote, speakers a bit "veiled" sounding, tweeters melted after 3 weeks.
All that being said, I would have rated this system a notch or two higher, but after only 3 weeks of useage, all three front tweeters MELTED. I did an internet search, seems I am not alone. Check out:
http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/3/120798.html
When powering up one day, with volume turned low, no sound came out although it should have, and then all of a sudden wisps of smoke came out of the front speakers. All three tweeters of the front three speakers were melted. It seems that this has happpened to enough people that there should be some sort of word or acknowledgement from Onkyo, but I haven't heard of any. Fortunately I was within the time frame to exchange it for a new unit at the store, and now it has been problem free for 3 months, but I am still a little apprehensive.

Best for the $, but not the Best
Pros: Price, Inputs/Outputs, Features
Cons: Speaker Wire, Complicated Remote, Speakers look OK
First impression was that it was 'nice.' I should first say that I am a little spoiled in my expectancies for a good system since I have watched many movies on my dad's $5000+ yamaha/paradigm system. Nevertheless, it met my personal expectations and honestly for the price it is a steal. It has everything you need for today's standards: optical/coax, dolby, dts, 6.1, not to mention a very impressive power output for both the speakers and the sub. If $500 is your cutoff for a system, save $100 and buy this now. You can spend the extra $100 on wires/cables.
What did I think of the sound? It is quite impressive that the sub is 10", most are 8" for the price range. However, the bass was still suffering from the size. Deep notes were loud instead of deep, and drowned out the audio in some places. Keeping the sub at the middle setting was more enjoyable. The speakers were nice, in my opinion they would be a lot nicer with an extra tweeter. The mids were drowning out the voices and I needed to turn my treble all the way up for a more crisp and clear sound. Once I got everything dialed in and positioned correctly, it sounded very nice. I am still using the small stock speaker wire however, so a thicker gauge may help with highs.
On another note, ditch the 6th speaker that it came with(the rear surround center) most movies dont really use this anyway, the reveiver just mimics what it should sound like as a mono signal, and it sounds very unnatural, ruining the purpose of the front center.
Remote: First impression: How do I frickin' work this thing? Honestly it is complicated the first night I was standing up to change things. But once you read the manual and get used to it, it has basically everything you need without having to get up.
All in all, I am satisfied with my purchase, as money is an issue with me, but for the range, I was shocked at the features it had, you wont be dissapointed, and I have yet to hear a better system.

Great value for the money
Pros: True component receiver; great sound
Cons: Large speakers; small gauge speaker wires
Consider the Silver model; speakers are much better looking than the black ones.
The receiver is the real deal, not a low-end special model like with many mid-priced HTIB systems. Subwoofer is huge, but awesome. No DVD player included, which suited me fine - I had a DVD/VCR combo that I wanted to keep; used optical cable to connect the DVD to the receiver. There is another model that is the same thing with a DVD player. Connected the HDTV by coax to another digital input (receiver has 4 total). Even the commercials on digital TV are entertaining with this setup.
The speakers are large. To me, the sound is worth it but if you are looking for a system that sort of disappears into the room, this is not it. Silver model is much less obtrusive than the black. Supplied speaker wire is very thin and should be upgraded, especially for longer runs.

Bom - Bonito - Barato !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros: Excelente Som.

very pleased
Pros: great bass, volume and movie sound
Cons: DTS setup so far. music range could be a bit better, but for the money, its great
Hooking it up was fairly easy, but complicated due to several older components that I was trying to hook up with it. Everything is working very well now though, except I'm having problems getting DTS to work on DTS DVDs.
The movie sound couldn't be better. I have a medium/large sized room and it fills it sufficiently. The receiver does a good job of distributing sound to the provided Onkyo speakers. I've only set up a 5.1 system, though when I have a better room for it, I will do the 6.1.
Music sounds good, too. I like listening to Boston at volume and I have yet to hear any distortion. I do notice a slight difference between the sound when compared to my nice Sony that I have in the car. While it sounds fuller in the house, the car's high range is a bit clearer. But just a bit.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with the system. The speakers are heavy and sound like my old Kenwood component speakers that I used to have. It would fun to hook those old ones up to this receiver and compare sounds one day. I like it, though. I would recommend it to anyone, including those willing to spend a thousand bucks or so. I did a lot of comparisons.....most have shortcomings, and even considering the price, this system had fewer than most.
