"Best for the $, but not the Best"

    by dskater411 on June 2, 2005

    Pros: Price, Inputs/Outputs, Features

Cons: Speaker Wire, Complicated Remote, Speakers look OK

Summary: Well, like everyone I started doing a lot of research on budget HT's before I made my purchase. Lots of reviews lead me toward this system, but the floor model was broken so I took my chances.
First impression was that it was 'nice.' I should first say that I am a little spoiled in my expectancies for a good system since I have watched many movies on my dad's $5000+ yamaha/paradigm system. Nevertheless, it met my personal expectations and honestly for the price it is a steal. It has everything you need for today's standards: optical/coax, dolby, dts, 6.1, not to mention a very impressive power output for both the speakers and the sub. If $500 is your cutoff for a system, save $100 and buy this now. You can spend the extra $100 on wires/cables.
What did I think of the sound? It is quite impressive that the sub is 10", most are 8" for the price range. However, the bass was still suffering from the size. Deep notes were loud instead of deep, and drowned out the audio in some places. Keeping the sub at the middle setting was more enjoyable. The speakers were nice, in my opinion they would be a lot nicer with an extra tweeter. The mids were drowning out the voices and I needed to turn my treble all the way up for a more crisp and clear sound. Once I got everything dialed in and positioned correctly, it sounded very nice. I am still using the small stock speaker wire however, so a thicker gauge may help with highs.
On another note, ditch the 6th speaker that it came with(the rear surround center) most movies dont really use this anyway, the reveiver just mimics what it should sound like as a mono signal, and it sounds very unnatural, ruining the purpose of the front center.
Remote: First impression: How do I frickin' work this thing? Honestly it is complicated the first night I was standing up to change things. But once you read the manual and get used to it, it has basically everything you need without having to get up.
All in all, I am satisfied with my purchase, as money is an issue with me, but for the range, I was shocked at the features it had, you wont be dissapointed, and I have yet to hear a better system.
