"Very Satisfied Customer!!!"
Pros: Outstanding Sound at a Great Price
Cons: Too Much is Not a Good Thing
Summary: This is my first endeavor in "Home Theatre" and I am very satisfied with my choice. Usually any purchases of substantial cost I check out what the editor's picks are at a place called cnet.com. But this was actually an "impulse buy" since Circuit City just happened to be right there.
I know already what I want and don't want - or so I think. I'm figuring a great receiver - average speakers (can upgrade later) - and a 5.1 system. After all 5.1...6.1...yadda ya - c'mon 7.1? How many "software" titles actually use 7 different channels?
The price and quality of this thing sold me.
Sure, you need a own a DVD player already. Big deal. Thats why I liked this system versus most HTIB packages. I already owned a DVD player that kicks butt over most the other guys include (and its a Zenith - dont laugh - *snicker*).
The setup was very easy....and being a newbie to this I got it right on my first try. Our living room is a good size - about 20x30 and this thing is loud enough to really annoy your neighbors (not saying you should - but hey maybe you don't like your neighbors.
Great sound and a great price ($470). So what the prob? Well first off that 470 bucks turns quickly into 600+ bucks after cables/wires/taxes/etc. The supplied speaker wires aren't long enough especially the back ones. And since we gotta be on the up 'n up...gotta go with the pricey but nice stuff. Oh, and you need a subwoofer cable. What is this? "Pencil-pusher you need a printer-cable that is not supplied with your printer" re-visited? I'd love to get my hands on the moron behind that scheme!
Anywho, there isn't much to dislike about this system. The different sound modes are pretty much useless - you will find the ones you like and stick with them (why would you want to listen to something in mono mode?). The remote is a bit intimidating and I wish it was back-lit or at least "glow in the dark". Speaker wires aren't long enough....oh and according to the EDITORS of cnet.com - the blocky speakers might not appeal to some. Well I'm happy with the way the setup looks - I don't need my living room transformed into a space caspule - and a nice V-8 in my "blocky" old Cadillac suits me just fine (I can hear the hybrid owners gasping).
The "cons" here are grasping at best. This is a wonderful setup and I am extremely happy with it. The speakers are wood construction and capable of whatever the powerful receiver throws at them. The woofer is over-the-top.....way too much for me so it's gotta be good enough for the younger "bass is everything, I love computerized music" crowd.
Opinionated? You bet I am. But this is a great deal and much more of a ststem than I really expected to purchase, but well worth it.
