"Best HTIB in the market today. PERIOD."
Pros: Raw power! Awesome surround
Cons: Little large in size, no cross format conversion.
Summary: I had been researching the home theatre system market for nearly a year now and finally after tallying up nearly 18 reasonable systems in the market today, I finally got the HT-S790 [black] for $380 @ Circuit City + $50 for the replacement glass for my side table.
I am more than happy with the performance of the unit. Setup was a breeze. Let me tell you one thing, it has POWER! And I mean RAW POWER. Listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's 'dum mast kalander' my side table's glass broke due to the woofer's solid base and hene the $50 additional!
It has a wealth of connection options. I have my DVD player, my pinnacle media player, and my satellite receiver plugged in with the component video inputs and optical/digital audio inputs. My VCR thru the S-Video and analog audio.
I do not have a problem with the size of the speakers. Its a very simple/sober looking design.
The only limitation that I found was that it does not do video format conversion. For novices, it means that the inputs to the onkyo receiver and the outputs from the onkyo receivers have to match. You cant have component video input and expect this receiver to change the format and output via s-video. This is too much to ask for for products in this price range
The net net of it all is that you will need to hook up additional cables from your onkyo receiver to the TV for any additional formats of your choice. (component video, svideo and composite video)
Trust me, its one sweet system. Onkyo has done it again by beating sony and panasonic in the HTIB market space.
