Manufacturer description
When it comes to all-in-one home theater, the HT-SR800 has made a clean break from the pack. You're looking at packaged home theater that neatly integrates your high-definition entertainment and your HDTV through an HDMI channel that transports video with a resolution all the way up to 1080p. Ably supported by component video switching, the HT-SR800 will handle most of the A/V components or formats currently available, as well as the spectacular quality of high-definition discs. Also, reinforcing the convenience of matched components, this package is the first to use an Audyssey room-correction technology specifically designed for integrated systems.User opinions

Excellant for the price
Pros: Great Output
Cons: bukly Size/shape
This is a bulky home theatre not meant for smaller living rooms.
Output of SR800 is great with full 7.1 channel speaker system, you won't find a better one out there at that price, who needs a DVD player when its blu-ray DVD player you wanna buy these days (which don't come standard with home theater systems).

Outstanding system for the price
Pros: Inputs/Outputs galore
Cons: lack of wireless rear speakers
Sounds great and I have not even spent any time with the automated setup.
Really happy to this point. My wife really would have liked the wireless rear speaker option, but that's only time to hide the wires for me.

I need to tell you about the bad - the speakers
Pros: Receiver is solid and performs well
Cons: speakers, owners manuel
I am still happy I bought it. But if I had it to do over again I would spend even more time on research and get the receiver by itself and look into different speakers. I live three hours from the store I bought it at - otherwise I would have returned the unit and done so. After spending many hours fine tuning it I was not up for going through the "buying" experience again.

Great Bang for The Buck!
Pros: Automatic speaker calibration, great price
Cons: Haven't found any yet
The auto speaker calibration was a breeze. I've tweaked the speakers, after I let them break in, here and there to my tastes, but it was nearly spot on.
Fortunately, the HDMI connection isn't an issue with me because, for the moment, I don't have a real need for one. For those who do, I can understand the problem of needing to run an extra cable for audio. That really doesn't make sense to me. But for the price, this system really can't be beat.

Great system, Brings movies to life
Pros: Excellent sound, good price
Cons: not enough speaker wire for rear surround speakers, 30 ft, I needed roughly 50 ft, for a room that is 20 by 15

I find it hard to justify spending more.
Pros: Sound is top notch.
Cons: HDMI connections suck.

Good System for Small Spaces
Pros: Many connections, good quality
Cons: No in-receiver switching or HDMI up-conversion, add your own DVD/VHS, etc...
We got the Onkyo system home and I was very impressed, UNTIL I began trying to get it set up. Don't get me wrong, it's fairly easy to set up, but for a smaller room than ours, perhaps 12x15 max. Our room is 12x20 and has major openings on two sides with windows on the third; solid on only one wall.
Everything in the kit is of high-quality, but none of the speaker wires (nicely color coded) were going to work with our set-up. Plus, with the addition of a front projector as well as a flat-screen, I now faced cabling issues.
The HT-SR800 does NOT pass-through audio via its HDMI OUT jack, which Nor does it do any internal switching. Want to run a signal from the Comcast Moto DVR? You'd need to run seperate video and audio lines for EACH output device. Want to run a signal from the DVD player? More cables. VHS deck? More cables still.
This is a nice sytem for someone with a SINGLE TV, who doesn't need switching and can ghet by without upconversion or crippled HDMI.
Ours is going back to Fry's...
I'll exchange it for the highly rated Onkyo TX-605 AV Receiver, which has internal switching, HDMI video AND audio, plus full upconversion. I'll add a center and surround speakers to my existing SpeakerLab kit. That way everything will run nicely to the LCD flat-screen through the one HDMI OUT. I can run component video to the projector, which doesn't need audio.

Amazing System, Incredible Price
Pros: Sound Quality, Connectivity, Universal Remote Actually Works
Cons: Somewhat Complicated Controls
The sound is incredible - I would never have believed you could get what is in my opinion a near-audiophile quality system for $500, never mind $430. The highs are crisp, the midrange doesn't get lost and the subwoofer puts out a very clean bass sound with the rumble you're looking for when you watch action movies.
I have a friend that has true audiophle level equipment ($30,000 in AV equipment) and I truly believe that his system with the separate amps per channel, etc. sounds no better than the HT-SR800. I let him listen to it as well and he couldn't believe his ears.
Connecting the speakers was very easy - it's all color coded connections and wire so you can't go wrong. Take the time to set up the Audessy system - it works. The HDMI Connection does not pass through audio, so you take full advantage if the HDMI connections you must buy either the digital coax or optical digital cable for the sound. The remote is the first one I've owned that I was able to program all of my components in and it actually worked. The controls are somewhat complicated at first, but realize you are getting a system that is way beyond what most Home Theaters in a Box offer, with all of the controls you need to tailor the sound to your taste. Overall, You will NOT get a better system for this price or even if you spend hundreds more.

Outstanding for the price
Pros: Great reciever, great 1080p thruput, good power strong sub-w
Cons: HDMI 1080p thruput only, sub par speakers
Bought the Sr-800 about a month ago now. All I can say is for $450 this is by far the #1 HTIB system to own for the price. I have so many great things to say about this system I dont know where to start. I soley bought this HTIB for the reciever but After replacing the speaker wire with decent 14 awg oxygen free wire I got a huge gain from the rear spearkers and was impressed. The reciever alone in my book is worth the $450 very impressed with the power and functionality of it. I cant wait to replace the rear speakers and experiment with the power. I have not tested this yet but I spoke with several Onkyo tech over the phone and they have all assured me since the HDMI is passthrough only it will support HDMI 1.3 with out problems. The front speakers on this system are solid and lively I might experiment with other speakers but if I dont get any gain I will stick with the solid orginal front speakers. Dont get me started on the sub-w its strong and smooth you can hear/feel the quality, My girlfriend said it put chills down her spine during a movie. My only complaint about this system is that the HDMI is passthrough only but I dont mind because my TV has 3 Hdmi inputs so it not a deal breaker for me. Im very anal with my HDTV settings anyways, I have calibrated settings for each of my inputs blu-ray DVD,Gaming,DVD,CPU,SD, and HD TV so regardless of the hdmi passthrough this system is a good fit for me at this price point I couldnt be happyier with my choice. Just my 2 cents.
