Panasonic's new "slim is in" theater package, the SC-HT900 (listed at $500), will appeal strongly to style-conscious buyers. The slinky tower speakers and the pancake-thin receiver/five-disc DVD changer maintain the lean theme. The system boasts a fairly heavyweight feature lineup, including progressive-scan video output and DVD-Audio capability. While sound quality is the HT900's most ordinary aspect, it's actually better than that of the similar Panasonic SC-ST1, which costs twice as much.

Panasonic clearly meant the system's silver, plastic finish to complement that of similarly styled plasma and flat-screen TVs. Each 42-inch-tall tower, or tallboy, has three separate parts: a weighted circular base, a stand, and a slender column speaker. The relatively squat, 9.75-inch-wide center also comes with a small stand. Wall-mounting is another option with any or all of the speakers. Wiring and assembly consumed an hour of our time. The subwoofer is the bulkiest component, measuring 6.5 inches wide, 17.5 inches high, and 16.75 inches deep.

At first glance, you'd never guess the 2.5-inch-tall receiver could possibly house a five-disc changer, but the unit's 17-inch depth is a major clue. We could quibble about the tiny, black buttons and their barely legible labels, but we didn't have any problems over the long run. The nifty-looking remote tested our dexterity at times, but it's no worse than average.

The receiver/carousel changer can hold five DVDs and offers the usual selection of Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS, and DTS Neo:6 surround-processing modes. It also plays DVD-Audio discs, but it lacks bass and treble controls. You can, however, tweak the subwoofer level from the remote.

The HT900's speakers and subwoofer bear more than a passing resemblance to those of Panasonic's $1,000 kit, the ST1. The four towers each use a single 2.5-inch woofer and a tweeter of unspecified size. The center bears the same complement, plus a duplicate woofer. The sub has a 6.75-inch driver and houses the system's six power amplifiers. The front- and rear-channel amps are rated at 35 watts each, the center receives a strangely disproportionate 140 watts, and the sub's amp pumps out 150 watts.

All our MP3 discs played, and the HT900 always displayed complete file information. The changer also readily handled DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, DVD+Rs, DVD+RWs, and DVD-RAMs of all kinds.

The connectivity suite will satisfy basic needs. You get three sets of stereo inputs; one line output; one optical digital input; and composite, S-Video, and progressive-scan component outputs.

Our home-theater trials ran the gamut from straightforward drama DVDs such as The Godfather to the more-challenging, recently released Phone Booth. The latter film's gritty urban feel and creative multichannel mix fully exercised the HT900. The sound was quite detailed, but it never broke free of the towers--we were always aware of the speakers' locations. The HT900 did best at low to moderate volume levels; cranking them up had a hardening effect.

Can the HT900 rock out? It sounded passable on White Stripes' mellower tunes, such as "In the Cold, Cold Night," but it turned spitty on our favorite track, "Ball and Biscuit." Meg's thumping drum kit kicked with conviction, but the beanpole speakers couldn't muster enough energy for Jack's vocals and thrashing guitar licks. So we lowered the volume and explored Linda Ronstadt's big-band-inspired What's New DVD-Audio disc. That came across much better--so sweetly we had to remind ourselves we were listening to a $500 kit.

After listening to both the HT900 and the ST1, we preferred the lower-priced HT900. The two systems' speaker packages are almost identical, but the HT900's is a bit more powerful. Maybe that's why it sounds a little bigger and fuller; it certainly gave Radiohead's Amnesiac CD more texture and space. The HT900's superiority is due in part to its center speaker, which isn't as wimpy as the ST1's ultrathin one. Both kits will perform best in rooms smaller than 250 square feet.

Pros: great surround sound

Cons: will not play rented dvd's

Review: Bought this unit 3 1/2 years ago and it worked great until about a month ago than it quit playing rented dvd's. I just recently bought the new Harry Potter movie played it once now it won't. Bought a new dvd cleaner still did not help. (I posted about this in forums but no one's been able to help yet). But it will play dvd's recorded by a dvr.

Great system (for a while)

Pros: Decent sound, attractive speakers

Cons: Loud popping

Review: Got this system for a low price from Best Buy. It's worked well for the last few years. It's really nice to have the slender vertical speakers (recommend a creeper to hide the wires under the carpet or baseboards). However now there's a loud popping sound coming from the system. I did some research and found the popping is caused by the sub-woofer overheating. I opened it up and found that the fan inside is dead. So I ordered a new $10 fan from Panasonic.com and hopefully that'll fix the problem. If that fixes it I'd recommend this system to the thrifty home-theater buyer.
Updated
In my humble opinions the home theater in a box or HTIB is a economical way to get decent surround sound in your modest living rooms. The speakers that come with the HT900 are aesthetically pleasing. The 5-disc changer is convenient. However the subwoofer (SB-WA350) is a sub-par component. Panasonic would be better off selling the speakers by themselves and allowing you to get your own subwoofer. It works as advertised out of the box. However, after a 2-3 year period you'll start to notice a loud popping sound and the occasional deafening tone coming from your system. The culprit is the subwoofer. What's happening is that the subwoofer is overheating and that sound you hear is your the circuit board inside dying. Don't bother trying to just replace the small PC fan inside. The connection on the circuit board is what is dead. The box will continue to overheat. If you're looking for a decent HTIB then avoid this one. Looks are deceiving.

It lasted 2 1/2 years. Then the pops and hissing.

Pros: Great Features. Nice Sound.

Cons: No Bass/Trebble Controls. POPPING & HISSING

Review: I enjoyed my SC-HT900 until it began to die after 2 1/2 years of use. The awful cracking and popping. Very LAME for Panasonic to sell this system and not back it up with a reasonable repair system for a clear defect. They should pay for the shipping and repair them for free. Avoid the class action claims.
Other than that, the picture quality is good. Sound for home theater is great, and it does 2ch source music pretty well. Bass is okay, but not amazing.
I guess I should be happy that it didn't die after only one year.

Great product - up to a point!

Pros: Compact size of all components

Cons: Defective processor

Review: I bought this unit in September 2003 at Circuit City for $450. It has worked flawlessly for the first two and a half years, then it started clicking and popping from all speakers simultaneously. Occasionally, all sound will stop for a second or two and then return. Every once in a while the sound will not come back at all until I press the Surround Sound or Dolby buttons. The clicks and pops seem to be lounder than the volume setting and it can scare you half to death. I am a big fan of Panasonic products, but this is the first serious problem I've ever had and I'm extremely disappointed. After reading what other people have written about this product I'm not sure I'll have any success repairing it economically and will probably have to replace it. It was a 10 until the popping started, now it's less than a ZERO!

Very sexy system!

Pros: Looks more expensive than it is. Great soud. Lots of flexibility w/ speaker stands. Awesome bass and surround sound.

Cons: Needs even more bass and power!

Review: This is my 1st home theatre system and I love it. I love how it looks, espceially if you have a plasma next to it. I have had this system for over 2 years and I have yet to experience any problems with it. No popping noise, no issues what so ever. I am still happy and please with my system.

A Trade Off In Sound and Features

Pros: It does have an 'optical' input so you CAN attach an SACD player for true surround sound.

Cons: The sound is better than most stereos, but still a bit 'tinny' and the bass is not well balance nor powerful.

Review: For the beginner, its not bad. For the true audiophile, I would suggest getting separate componenets of the same brand and making your own system. No matter what tose dealers tell you, the opticval input in the back WILL source through an SACD/Decoder player for SACD 5.1 sound.

Popping and Hissing!

Pros: Looks, sounds good out of the box, then its all down hill from there!

Cons: Hissing, popping, then it just quit! Pitiful!

Review: I bought this unit 2 years ago and it worked great. Then the trouble started. The unit popped and hissed every 15 to 30 minutes, then just quit! Panasonic you oughta be ashamed of yourselves for putting this one out. Because I was on a budget at the time, I thought I was getting a good unit, should have read the reviews at CNET!

Put down another one for defective

Pros: sounds nice when it is working

Cons: It won't work correctly for very long

Review: I usually don't leave product reviews but because I feel burned so badly on this one I had to say something to warn everyone else. I was actually online searching for a way to remedy the popping and hissing, thinking I must have been doing something wrong, and then I ran across other reviews that were stating the same problem that I am having. This system really is pathetic peace of junk and I have been totally embarrassed by them on more than one occasion. They will pop and hiss (loudly) then the sound will totally disappear. Forget this system and don't give Panasonic another dime. If I were looking for a new system I would go with Bose. Yes, Bose systems are expensive but they know have payment options on their website and I can guarantee you won't get these types of reviews form their system.

great price poor audio quality

Pros: price 399.00

Cons: bad audio feed back in speakers serge sound

Review: This is a nice system for the price but the poping that comes out during play back makes for a bad theater system. The poping sounds like a power serge from the speakers panasonic will not fix and as others have said it is a costly repair.

The popping noise is irritating

Pros: there are no pros for this system unless you like popping noises

Cons: this system leaves you on the edge of your seat, waiting for the next popping noise

Review: I bought this system in august 2003 and it lasted for a year. August 2004 it began making this very loud popping noise which scares the crap out of you, especially when watching a movie with the speakers turned up loud. It also completely shuts off the sound when this happens. I thought i had wired something wrong but it turns out the system overheats and causes this to happen. The best thing to do is to take the system out back and "Office Space" it, you know with baseball bats and stuff!!

Piece of JUNK!!!

Pros: Great Looking

Cons: Fails after 6-9 months - pops & cracks

Review: Stay away from this one. I loved the system when new but agter 6-9 months it started to pop and crack. I orginanlly thought it was my house wiring or the system was arking. After reading the other reviews I have determinined that the system is defective. Bought at Circuit City for $500 but have not spoke to them about the issue. Time for a new system. I also have a Sony home theater system that is great. Several years old. Guess its another Sony in room #2.

Great value, great sound

Pros: Looks good, includes stands, sounds better than anything costing twice as much

Cons: Aparent overheating problem, add your own cooling.

Review: I've owned this model for a little over a year. It really does sound incrediable for the price, especially for watching movies. Its sounds pretty good for music, but is much better suited for TV and movies. This is a great buy for a small to medium sized room (mine is roughly 15'x15'), and it definitely is capable of producing high quality sound at volume levels higher than you would need. I bought this model without reading any reviews mainly because it came with the stands and was on clearence. When I got it home I started seeing the reviews about the dreaded popping...I decided to investigate and it would seem like the temperature sensor that turns the fan on is bad, or the fan just simply doesn't get powered. It gets very hot in there if you have to volume up as there is no airflow and the amps can really heat up. I pulled out the fan, popped in a standard 80mm computer fan and hooked it up to a 7V ac adapter which gives good quiet cooling. Now obviously you shouldn't have to do this to something brand new you buy, but by now anyone reading this probably already has one or is going to buy one used. So if you're experience the popping, its probably a heat problem and can be fixed by adding some cooling, unless permanant heat damage has already been done to your unit.

Avg. Movie buffs will Love it!!

Pros: Great price even better looks

Cons: As with any thing.. If you abuse it you lose it.

Review: Look I know there are so-called "Issues" about speakers and sound but I have never had any. My friend and I both have the SC-TH900 and both of them work fine well after one year of use. If your going to blast any low-end system everytime you turn on your tv then you can bet you will have speaker issues. Use your brain... If you want brain cell busting sound buy a $2,000 system. For $500 or less this system is perfect for the ave. movie buff. Still un-sure... then buy the 3yr extended warranty.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - KNOWN DEFECT

Pros: Nice design

Cons: Known defect

Review: PLEASE listen to the negative reviews on this model, they are all on point. I too have experienced the dreaded "popping" noise, less than 6 months after purchasing. It's unpredictable, and as you might imagine it makes your listening experience a stressful one. In dealing with Panasonic, they deny any knowledge of the defect even though it's posted all over the Internet. The system is pretty much useless at this point and will cost more to fix than it's worth. $500 down the drain. If you buy it, don't say you weren't warned!

Great system if you only want it for 6 months!

Pros: Works great at first.

Cons: Slowly degrades and becomes unusable after 6 months.

Review: Liked this unit initially but after six months every DVD & CD played would give us a heart stopping loud pop that would blow out the sound. The only fix was to turn off the unit completely, wait 15-30 min. (any sooner and this fix won't work) and then turn the unit back on.

If you have unlimited time and don't like watching a movie in one continuous stretch then this is the DVD player for you.
