"Upgrade the speaker cable"
Pros: Reasonably priced Home Theatre in the Box system with HDMI interface
Cons: Inferior factory provided speaker cable. Need to spend a bit more for upgraded cable but it will help immensely!
Summary: I bought the SC-HT940 in conjunction with Panasonic's 50" Plasma TV. I figured this was their top of the line HTIB system and was a good match with the TV. Once I set it up I was surprised the sound wasn't as good as I expected. The sound wasn't deep and in fact kind of tinnie. I adjusted all the settings w/o a difference. On a whim, I replaced the factory provided cable (which is not much thicker than dental floss) with some other speaker cable I already had. What a difference! The sound was much richer and deeper and is what I expected when I bought it. I'm quite surprised Panasonic put such substandard cable. My recommedation is to spend another $25 or so and upgrade the speaker cable.

This is a common problem with all HTIB systems. This is the first thing I do whenever I purchase a new system, replace the speaker wire.

What kind of cable did you have? Did you rewire all 5 speakers, or just the front?

It seems that if you are not close to the rear speakers you cannot hear them. And there is no volume control to turn them up so they balance with the front speakers.
