A budget-priced home theater in a box (HTIB) with cute, little satellite speakers and good sound is a tall order, but the Philips MX966 is up to the job. Do you also want home theater-style bass to go along with your sound? No problem. The MX966's compact powered subwoofer belts out a potent bottom end--it's far ahead of the typical HTIB's pseudosub. And Philips's engineers weren't fixated on just sound; they also loaded on a host of useful features.

Plenty of options
The MX966 package includes a 500-watt (total power) A/V receiver, a 100-watt powered subwoofer, and five satellites. What's missing? For starters, the receiver decodes only Dolby Digital surround sound--not DTS. In addition, the MX966 lacks a DVD player, so you'll have to add one (or use your VCR) to complete your home theater. Philips is awfully generous with connectivity options: you get a set of 5.1 SACD/DVD-Audio inputs; three A/V inputs; one A/V output; three audio inputs, including phono; four digital audio and five S-Video connections; and two switched AC outlets! Whew--we've seen far more expensive units with much less flexibility.

This AM/FM receiver's look and feel are a cut above the norm for budget electronics. Thoughtful touches abound--the big, bold display is easy to read, and Philips nixed the standard-issue, flimsy wire-clip connectors in favor of beefy speaker-binding posts on the front three speakers (the surround connections are spring clips).

The silver, plastic satellites weigh less than one pound each, but their look is offset by tasteful, gray-knit grilles. The center speaker is configured in the classic woofer/tweeter/woofer array, which is unusual in a budget-priced HTIB. But be careful to keep this nonshielded sub a foot or two from your TV, or it will distort the picture and eventually damage the TV. We had one more gripe: the subwoofer doesn't automatically turn on and off, so you'll have to remember to hit the switch.

Surprising sound
Typical flyweight satellites usually sound like little plastic speakers, but the MX966's six-inch tall units were clean and clear. Everybody's taste is different, but we preferred the sound even more after we fiddled with the receiver's bass and treble controls.

The system's composure wasn't ruffled by the surreal war epic The Thin Red Line, as long as we held the volume to moderate levels. We credit the potent sub with endowing the system with a solid foundation. Surround effects from the rear speakers blended seamlessly with the front soundstage. Like any system with microsatellites, the MX966 sounds best in small- to medium-sized rooms. So don't expect the unit to play really loud--the speakers have their limits.

We tweaked the level and crossover controls on the sub to mesh with the satellites before we rocked out with James Blood Ulmer's tasty new blues CD, The Sun Sessions. The ensemble easily transmitted the band's funked-up blues grooves, but Ulmer's growling vocals lacked their natural warmth. We're just being picky, but we liked the MX966's sound on DVDs better than with CDs. And we felt the tuner sounded thin and a bit brash.

Those few gripes aside, we were mightily impressed with the MX966. Its combination of sound quality and features coupled with its affordable $400 list price are hard to beat. Philips offers a similar HTIB, the $450 MX1015D, which incorporates a DVD player but has less power and skips a few features.

Greate Home THeater System

Pros: I got MX 977 model. It has Dolby and DTS both. Sounds incredible. Philips has always done great job in audio systems.

Cons: Remote is not that easy to use specially when it comes to power option for receiver it self.

Great value at that price ($240)!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bought the MX-999 instead, same as the 966 but it also supports DTS sound. Chose this one based on the connectivity options (used all of them!), plus already had a DVD player to connect to it. Sounded very good, but sounded much better when connected to previously installed di-pole surround speakers hanging from the cathedral ceiling. Remote and settings not that user friendly, but I don't really change them. Bought it from Provantage.com for $240 including shipping! Had to cancel an initial order placed at Finiter.net (the credit card approval never went through on their end, very poor customer service at that site).

Great Buy for your money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After reading all the reviews about this product and researching for more than 2 months , I finally ordered this product (MX999) from proadvntage.com for $323.00. It took me somtime to get adjusted to this receiver. It had all the connections required so I was impressed by that. The speakers were cute and small and subwoofer was excellent. The first movie I tried was Harry Poter. At first I was not able to feel the surround sound and I thought the equiptment is not upto my mark. But then I figured that my DVD was decoding the digital output and so the receiver was not performing its job and it was sending decoded signals from the DVD directly to the speakers. I made some changes on my DVD player and wow!! this system started to Rock.I was able to feel the surround got Pearl Harbour and it really won my heart. You can really feel that you are part of action with planes flying around you and the sounds of bullets comming from your surround speakers.I love this systema and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a quaility HTIB without spending a fortune Negative: Support is not techincally sound and they always refer back to the manual which is already shipped. So dont expect too much from the support.I am still not able to configure the remote to work with other devices.Somehow the manual never specifies that this remote is universal. Also the speaker clamps are missing, so need to buy them.

Got the MX 955

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All the Phillips are similar in this group. Mine has 5 slot DVD as well for $499. Why pay more if you don't have to.

Sounds great, priced right

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this system from finiter.net for $299 and it sounds as good as systems costing twice that. The receiver is excellent. The only real downside is no DTS. The speakers and receiver look better in person than I expected and there are plenty of connections and surround options. If you have a DVD player already, look no further for great sound in a budget home theater.

OK... So its not a Bose.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: So this thing isn't a Bose surround system. The only reason you should be complaining about the sound coming from this unit is if you can afford to drop $700 or more on a surround sound system. Reproduction of sound is accurate with only a few frequency gaps. I have all of my A/V equip including PS2 hooked up to this thing. Lets just say that since I hooked it all up, I'm not getting as much exercise.

Great Unit for the money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Picked it up at Costco for $300 and have been rocking out to XBOX everyday. One problem is make sure you set the volume down when you turn it off because when the kids get up at 7:30 in the morning and start playing you will wake up!

Excellent for the Price!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had the HTIB for 2 months now and love it. It has plenty of power and great bass with the WOOX technology. Would recommend it to anyone with a tight budget.

Digital Audio is phenomenal!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Did a lot of research before buying, and thought this is the best system for the money. Read CNET review and thought I'd give it a shot. Great system for small to mid-sized rooms. This system is excellent. Hook up is very easy if you read the manuals (may want to get some monster cable though, spkr wires included look like 20AWG or 22AWG). Got my system at Costco for $299. Great value!! Spent another $30 on optical audio cable, and need to buy monster cable for spkrs next, but everything else I needed was included. Subwoofer is incredible. Center speaker sometimes drowns out sattelite spkrs at times in analog audio mode. Not a problem in Dolby digital mode playing DVDs though. I may need to play with settings a little. Ability to control individual spkr volume by inputting spkr distances, or manually controlling the individual volumes is very helpful. Smooth transition of sound btw satellite spkrs. Audio range also good. High freq and very low freq sounds very clear even at higher volumes. DTS would be better (this system comes with the FR968 receiver, no DTS...the FR975 does have DTS decoding though, I think). Played "Star Wars, Phantom Menace" and thought I was in the theater again. No component video I/O, but that's OK since you won't use these unless you own a HDTV ready set anyhow. S-video is more than sufficient for regular TV sets. Back-lit remote would be nice, but all necessary functions are there. Ability to cut power to subwoofer from remote would also be nice. I like the "smart sound" button. In short, this system has all the options you'd need for hook-up, speaker control (manual or automatic using preprogrammed settings), and remote control features. The drawbacks are: no DTS and no component I/O. But you may not find these even on some higher priced $600+ systems. Most DVDs with DTS also include another option for surround mode.

Super sound for the price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The sound coming out is great. It is a bit of a problem too connect everything. But hey I guess that comes with all the connectivity possible.

User Rating: 10/10

Best for the Buck

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This system gives you the most features and best sound quality for teh money. Beats systems hundreds of dollars more! The WooX subwoofer and superior sattelites make great sound.

MX965 is a great product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I own the 965, not the 966. But I love my 965, not DTS, but small price to pay for awesome sound I got for just $300! I'm sure the 966 is just as good if not better.
