In terms of value, it's hard to beat a home-theater-in-a-box system. While these systems have long bundled the home theater basics--DVD player, amplifier, and surround-sound speakers--into one package, manufacturers have continually upped the ante in recent years with more and more features. Samsung's HT-TZ512T is an excellent case in point. Yes, it's got the DVD player (actually a five-disc CD/DVD changer), amplifier (built into the same DVD unit), and 5.1 surround speakers (including front "tallboys"), but it adds plenty of other now-standard extras, including HDMI output with 1080p upconversion, an iPod dock, and wireless rear speakers. The TZ512T also boasts better-than-average compatibility with digital media formats (playable by plugging a storage device into the unit's USB port). With all of that built-in, it's not terribly surprising that the HT-TZ512T doesn't have the capacity to accept many connections from other AV sources (meaning, you'll have to use your TV to toggle to other game consoles, DVRs, Blu-ray players, and so forth). But with a street price of $400--and sound quality that will satisfy most nonaudiophile listeners--the Samsung HT-TZ512T largely delivers as an entry-level home theater system with plenty of bells and whistles.

The system's "head unit" houses the DVD player and amplifier. It's a nice, slim housing, but wide enough to make room for the five-disc carousel it houses. The black plastic encasing should match most HDTVs and others electronics. The front of the unit is laid out well, with a nice flip-down panel that hides a USB port, headphone jack, and an auxiliary-in port. Beyond DVD and CD playback, the TZ512T also has an FM radio and is XM-ready (add an XM Mini-Tuner antenna--and an XM subscription--to receive the satellite radio service).

Otherwise, connectivity is pretty basic. Beyond the standard composite, component, and HDMI video outputs (no S-Video), the rear panel has just two audio-only inputs: one analog stereo connection (red and white RCA jacks) and one optical audio input (for surround audio sources). That means you can only have the audio outputs of, say, a Nintendo Wii (stereo) and a cable/satellite box (surround) connected to the rear panel of the unit, and you'll have to use your TV for video-switching duties.

The HT-TZ512T can upscale video up to 1080p resolution when connected to an HDTV via HDMI. We've found upscaling to be an increasingly irrelevant feature--your HDTV's built-in scaling will usually do a better job. No, you won't get a picture that's anywhere near as good as Blu-ray, but--for nonvideophiles, at least--the Samsung's upscaling prowess is more than acceptable for the average consumer.

Digital media fans will appreciate that the TZ512T can pull a decent variety of files from a USB drive plugged into the front panel. File support includes JPEG picture files, MP3 and WMA audio files, and WMV and DivX video files. Also, the unit can play the preceding files if they are burned onto a disc (CD-R only) as well. The graphic interface for navigation and playing these files is quite intuitive. In fact, it ranks up there with some of the easiest experiences we've had with these types of setups. Furthermore, we had 100 percent playback compatibility with all the files we tested.

An iPod dock is also included, but be aware that the system only supports fourth-generation iPods and higher; this also includes the iPhone. Navigating and controlling your iPod is easy with the system's remote and uses the same graphic interface as with media files. That said, we were a bit disappointed, however, to find that the unit cannot play any videos off an iPod.

The system's remote is a derivation of the one you'd find with Samsung TVs. It's laid out well and is easy to operate and can be programmed to control any other model TV you may have.

The five speakers are slickly designed and have a thin fabric over their grilles. The front left and right speakers are 4-foot slim tallboys that can be stashed away on either side of your TV. The 16-inch subwoofer is a passive model (not self-powered). All three front speakers (and the subwoofer) connect to the head unit with standard wire-clip connectors rather than proprietary plugs--so you could theoretically add your own speakers, if you'd like.

One of the main attractions of the HT-Z512T is the wireless rear surround speakers. An included wireless receiver must be placed in the rear of your listening room and it must be near a power source. The rear left and right surround speakers are then wired up to this device which in-turn syncs to the main receiver up front via a small transceiver (about the size of a USB thumbdrive) that sticks out of the back of the unit. Like with all of these wireless rear speaker packages, the solution isn't wireless per se, but it does prevent the need to run those two longest front-to-back wires along your floor. Moreover, setup was painless--truly plug-and-play--and the sound quality was excellent, free of the sort of hiss that you often hear with such wireless hookups.

Like most HTiBs that promise wireless rear speakers, quite a bit of wiring is still required for them to function.

Once all the speakers were in place, it was time to put the system through its paces. The skinny tower speakers loomed large when we played the Batman Begins DVD, and the HT-TZ512T's five speakers created a seamless, room-filling sound. That said, the Batmobile's mighty engine overtaxed the subwoofer to the point it produced mild distortion and rattling noises, but that was only true when we listened fairly loud. Turning down the volume to a more moderate--but still fairly loud--level quelled the distortion.

We found that the spectacular car chases through the streets of Gotham lacked dynamic urgency. The svelte speakers didn't have the potency to make the mayhem come alive. Even Batman's (Christian Bale's) voice sounded a little too thin and bright: the center speaker's trim dimensions were taking their toll on the star's masculinity. That said, less demanding movies fair better. The HT-TZ512T sounded pretty average when we played a disc from the Lost: Season 3 set of DVDs.

CD sound was also decent if not ahead of the pack. When we popped in Outkast's CD The Love Below, we were treated to an impressive range of highs and lows. We were very pleased with the unit's overall music performance and how it handled the various genres on the CD. Rocking out with the Raconteurs' first CD, Broken Boy Soldiers, proved the HT-TZ512T could play loud enough to party. The sub's definition wasn't so hot, but bass was plentiful.

The orchestral score for the film Perfume was actually pretty good; the sound here was clear and clean. The HT-TZ512T's musical prowess was average for a HTIB in its price class.

Overall, the HT-TZ512 is an impressive home-theater-in-a-box that should be sufficient for the consumer who doesn't need a high-end AV solution but could use an extra audio input or two. Available in the $350-400 range, it's a neck-and-neck competitor with the similar Panasonic SC-PT760. While both are weak on the AV expansion front, the Samsung gets the nod for anyone who also needs support for digital media playback.

good, but defective product purchased

Pros: Great product. Best features for an all-in-one box HT System. I have done a lot of research but the combination of features is excellent. I used it for a while, so sound quality is acceptable for a HT system.

Cons: I got a defective product. After struggling with it for a while, I returned it to the store. The problem was that that sound mode (theater, movie, sports etc.) and the dolby features did not work. Customer support is pathetic

Review: Good product, but given Samsung product quality (poor) and customer support being poor, ensure within your first 30 days that you are OK.

Can not recommend

Pros: Played DVDs and had Decent sound while it lasted ...

Cons: Upscale never worked right - everytime you turn it off you will have problems with rear wireless speaker connection. The entire unit completely stopped working after only three months- Support process leaves much to be desired.

Review: After Dealing with the appalling support process and going with our a DVD player for almost two months. I had the DVD returned to my seeming untouched and nonfunctional with the same problems that I had sent it off with. Now Samsung has proven to be very difficultly to get good support. For the little money I spent I wish I would have invested in something other than Samsung. I cannot recommend this product.

Good but bad

Pros: Easy set up. Nice sound.

Cons: Sound turns off for no reason every once in a while. Shuts down during powering up.

Review: This system sounds really good when it is actually turned on. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to watch a White Sox game with no sound for 2 hours.

High quality for the money

Pros: Easy setup, high quality DVD video, acceptable surround sound, easy interface with other Samsung products

Cons: Lack of HDMI outputs, recognition of other Samsung products often slow,

Review: This was my first home theater that I purchased concurrently with my Samsung HDTV and Blue Ray player. Overall, the product is good value for the money. Audio and video output is good and the unit interfaces and recognizes the Samsung HDTV and Blue Ray player although this is often slow. The receiver includes a multidisk DVD player that upconverts to 1080p to provide a highly satisfying viewing experience. The receiver also accepts my iPod Touch for listening to music although iPod audio is only two channel stereo. My main criticism is the lack of HDMI and optical outputs. In order to get 5.1 surround sound from my Blue Ray player I need to rearrange the existing outputs which is inconvenient. I would prefer to set things up once and forget it, but this is not possible.

Not the complete home theater solution I hoped for.

Pros: Decent sound for the money. Clearly designed remote works well with Samsung TV's

Cons: Half baked Ipod and USB "features" make this unit more of a problem than a solution

Review: Like another poster, I was completely misled by the review touting the IPOD and USB features. The manual lists a page of compatable USB devices, but I was not able to read our Canon or Nikon digital cameras or any of our USB drives. The only sucess I had was reading JPEGS off a flash drive. What became the deal breaker however was IPOD support. Pugging in eather our Nanos or IPOD Classic invoked the onscreen menu which did not recognize second level menus. If you selected play by artist on the top menu, your only choice was to play all that artist's songs in alphabetical order--no submenu breaking selections into albums or songlists in the order of the original recording. Selecting music by album or genre also only produced an alphabetical list. There was no shuffle. I would have even been satisfied if I could disable this onscreen menu system and use my IPOD controls directly. Sadly. IPOD controls are disabled when plugging into the Samsung. As one who had moved much of my music collection into digital format and hoped for a clean and useful music as well as video playback system, this system was worse than going from the headphone jack to an audio input in my old stereo.

Misleading editorial review re: ipod, usb

Pros: Just got it; seems fine...

Cons: ipod controls are not usable (on my ipod nano); usb jpeg playback is crippled.

Review: For the ipod, you must click the up/down arrows to move to each and every consecutive choice, no holding it down to scroll. So, an album starting with "W" is going to take quite a while to reach. Moreover, songs in playlists and albums are in alphabetical order, not their intended order. A complete waste, except for the charging...

USB can play back jpegs from usb, with resolutions up to 5120x3480. Very nice. Except they're all displayed at 640x480. Forget HDMI & a high def TV. Also, though trivial after everything else, you can't step through jpegs like a slide show. You can pause on a picture, but if you change to next or previous, it starts auto-playing again, changing every few seconds.

I'm more irritated with the cnet reviewers than with the product...

1 year in and still love it

Pros: I have had this system for about a year now, and for the money I feel that I could have not made a better choice. 1080 up scale always seems to produce an outstanding picture. No problems at all with the rear wireless. USB input has been great.

Cons: Lack of digital inputs may force the consumer to get a little creative when hooking up several different devices.

Review: For the money sound and features can't be beat.

This thing blows my fathers 1000$ Bose system out of the water!

Impressed!

Pros: Very simple to set up and hook up. Instructions are clear (although print is kinda small) and the booklet is ONLY in english!! Good quality sound, although the speakers don't appear to be very high quality.

Cons: Wireless was kinda hard to set up. I had to reset the connection with the receiver several times before it would link up. The speakers look like something you got as a kid with your 8 track.

Review: I am very pleased with my home theatre system. It is not a three thousand dollar Bose system, but if you want a good meat and potatos home theater, this is a good one.

What a disappointment.

Pros: Absolutely nothing.

Cons: The protection signal kept coming on and when I reset it the check rear speaker signal would come on. Samsung customer service tried to help, but I became disgusted and returned the system.

Review: The HT-TZ512 was not at all what I expected. Became totally exasperated and returned it. Sprung for the Bose 3-2-1 GS Home Entertainment System. The bottom line is you get what you pay for the Bose is amazing. The Samsung is not true wireless and is disappointing. Very disappointing.

It has very nice features for the money.

Pros: It's all there. Dvd. subwoofer surround sound. You do not need to run wires across your room to rear speakers. Makes things much neater. 5 disc changer is nice on lazy days, you don't have to change movies every time you finish one.

Cons: Rear speakers are nor truly wireless, but still better than older technology. Changing inputs is a bit slow(going from dvd to aux e.g.)

Review: Good stuff. I have been a samsung fan for a while now. It is not the cheapest thing out there but it is certainly not the most expensive either. but I think it is very good for the money.

wireless system has problems

Pros: all-in-one design, price, sound

Cons: no track display for compact discs, wireless problems

Review: I purchased this unit to match a Samsung HDTV. In theory, the two units are made for each other and I have purchased all the extra cables to maximize the usefulness. However, I am now boxing it up to send back for the third round of repairs related to the wireless remote speaker device. This particular part/function hasn't worked correctly yet.

To be fair, Samsung customer service has been easy to navigate, quick to respond and they do keep accurate records so you do not have to start the story at the beginning every time you call. They are covering the shipping although you still need to pay for packing. Still, it is infuriating that their repair center is not thorough.

Bottom line is this unit has spent more time out of my house than in my house and my Netflix account is currently money wasted. I have been told that a third failed repair will finally trigger a replacement-after I box the dud up a fourth time, ship it to them, and after they receive it then the new unit will ship.

So far - So good

Pros: Syetem has great sound; Also the upconvert DVD is outstanding

Cons: Just purchased, not sure about longevity and still trying to fit with satellite system

Review: I would recommend this item, but I bought it at BB and it seems I got charged too much - But the system is great so far.
