Quick Take: The Sony DAV-FX500 is the most affordable model in Sony's 2006 DVD Dream System home-theater-in-a-box lineup to feature a five-disc DVD changer and XM-ready satellite radio connectivity. It has a 5.1-speaker system, with an automatic speaker setup program and a microphone to assist with proper speaker placement and optimizing sound quality. Its connectivity is highlighted by an HDMI output, which can upconvert DVDs to 1080i or 720p. It is also XM-ready, which means that with a subscription, it can receive XM satellite radio by attaching an XM Connect-and-Play antenna. The Sony DAV-FX500 ($600 list) will be available in May.

you want boom for your buck?... this is the system

Pros: the bass is unbelievably powerful. don't worry, just crank it

Cons: the 5 disc changer is awkward, not user friendly at all

Review: I purchased the product after carefully doing my homework. First of all, I like sony. And with a great deal throgh amazon, it was too hard to pass up.

Let's get the cons out of the way... the five disc operation demands patience. You can figure it out the hard way or do what we all hate, read the manual.

Aside from that, I should have bought two or three. The system comes loaded. We have a number of game systems, and reciever has outputs to handle them all. Just with that is a home run for the system.

Then we tried several dvds with bass sounding scenes. Try Final Fantasy Advent Children or Baraka. We were blown away by the rich boom. Yeah... the bass is the grand slam.

Still undecided? What are you waiting for?

Not what I expected

Pros: Nice upconversion on DVD

Cons: Weak Speakers

Review: Ok I dont know if it is just my purchase or what level of volume everybody is using this product on, but when I watch something like Lord of The Rings at volume level 26-33 my speakers start to crackle at high pitch levels, is anybody else experiencing this issue? Nice upconversion of the DVD though not worth $450 though

GREAT SYSTEM TO HAVE!!!!

Pros: Auto Calibration, HDMI Output, Ipod Connector,

Cons: Speaker Wire, Remote Control

Review: This is an exceptional system to have and even more so for the price. I have read the reviews from other fellow Sony DAV-FX500 owners and have noticed a few inaccuracies. This system has an HDMI Output and also has an Ipod connector directly in the front of the reciever. Just a little fyi for potential buyers. The sound is incredible and gets even better once you do the auto calibration and adjust the individual speaker levels. The most impeccable part of this system is reading the instructions and becoming familiar with all of its capabilities and options. For the longest I even thought this system was not loud enough until I read the manual and discovered that each speaker has it's own individual volume level. So all in all this was a great purchase and is a great system to have. Especially if you have a 50 inch Plasma to connect it to! I LOVE IT!!!!

Great product for Great Price

Pros: Easy to hook up, manage, setup

Cons: none so far.

Review: I bought the system from Best Buy over Christmas after recieving gift cards. The system has very crisp and realistic sound compared to other LG and Panasonic systems. I both tested in person at the store using my own CD (trans-siberian orchestra) I recommend everyone do this to find out which catches your ear. Also system performed well and the automatic setup was amazing. Great product for great price!

Great sounding system with tons of extras

Pros: Small speakers with a punch. Great features and decent price

Cons: Clip speaker wires to back of system. Unable to really upgrade the speaker wire without splicing. No speaker stands included for the surround speaker (although at least you get them for the front)

Review: Love the system inside and out. I've had it for a month now and just love it. I'll give you the bad first though.
1)Speaker conection to the back is via a clip, so you can't really upgrade the wires.
2)Can't delete the inputs that you don't use i.e XM for me. You also have to scroll through them to get from one to the other. (no quick hit button)
3) The auto calibration, although a great tool, sets the volume levels too low for me. I like it REALLY LOUD. This can be fixed with a few of the custom settings.
4) Custom settings can not be adjusted while a movie or cd is playing. This is not a major draw back though.
5)Rear speaker stands not included. I just wish they would have included because I like for all my stuff to match and getting aftermarket stands just aint the same.
6) When using the remote for the TV controls it is automatic to switching back to standard functions after 15 seconds of non TV use.
7) The 5 disc changer can be confusing on adding new disc. You have to hit the eject button at a certain time to keep it from skipping to the next disc automaticly.

With all that being said. Those are all minor issues. Now for the good stuff.

1) Componet and HDMI connections.
2) External audio frontside connections i.e MP3 players.
3) Great sound for the size of speakers.
4) Very small center channel speaker for thinner TV's.
5) Dvd's will resume at last stop even if you happen to switch disks for some reason. It works great for me in watching TV seasons on DVD. I was amazed that it even picked up on a last stopping point once when I acually took the DVD out and later put it back in. Don't know how it knew though???

Just to let you know I looked at the other smaller systems such as the Bose 321 GS (No HDMI), Denon 2.1 (not loud enough, so didn't spend much time on that one), and the smaller 2.1 Sony Platinum Dream system (costed twice as much and gave a whole lot less in sound and features.) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this system as long as you can get it under $500 after rebates and taxes.

Nice Startup System to have

Pros: Cheap! Easy to Setup! Great sound for the price!

Cons: The Speaker Wires were a little cheap would have like to have the option to get my own. No plug in for my Ipod

Review: This is a great startup system to have it sounds great athough there are a decent amount of wires it was not that much of a hassle. It came with a mic setup where it adjusted the sound depending of how big your room was. Would have like to have a plugin for my i pod.

A good system that could have been great!

Pros: Auto calibration, cool looking DVD/Receiver unit

Cons: Slightly underpowered, no HDMI in

Review: I've had the system for 5 days now and I've tried it every which way. The system is slightly underpowered but the sound is crisp and settings abound for techno geeks. Auto calibration is extremely easy and quick. Only two of the speakers have stands (front ones), 2 rear ones are made to be hung from wall or purchase 2 additional stands. While Sony sells their stands for $149.00 - I simply purchased a pair of B-Tech adjustable stands for $79.00 and they worked well and are same colour as Sony stands. The combined 5-disc DVD player/receiver (AM/FM)is very nice and cool looking however it lacks an HDMI input. My DVR/Cable box has an HDMI output but I can't use it to connect to the Sony DVD/Receiver - seems like a waste to use other type of connection. Manual is fair no more - while all the info is laid out, you have to hunt for it. One of the first thing it should mention is that each speaker and wire attachment are colour coded and that wire with colour tube goes into grey connection. This information is laid out piece meal and you have to read three different sections to discover this key info. That said, it is a good system and well worth the price I paid ($499.99 +tax) on sale. I would not have paid the listed price of $799.99 +tax. Bottom line, a good system that could have been great with a little more power and an HDMI-in connection.

Great Unit

Pros: Great sound, HDMI port, Easy setup

Cons: Woofer not powered

Review: I've had the unit 2 weeks now and I could not be happier. Glad I read the other Sony reviews 'cause I almost bought the 375 with no optical port. While @ the store I decided to spend the extra for this unit and it was the best choice I could have made.

Best for the Price

Pros: Auto Calibration, Digital Audio in (Optical & Coaxial), HDMI out

Cons: Subwoofer so so, Complicated Remote, Cheap Speaker Wire with unusual connectors

Review: I bought it from circuit city (ordered online and picked up from the local store)for about $450+tax (without $25 mail in rebate. I used 10% discount coupon available on the internet.
I had to exchange the first one because it stopped working, New one is working fine.
I have mounted the front speakers to the wall beside my plasma TV, did not use the supplied stand.
This system is a good bargain. You get 5-disc changer, 1000 watt, AM/FM Tuner, can hook-up your I-pod or mp3 player in the front. It is little bigger than what I thought but I think most of the 5 disc systems are big. Sound quality is pretty good, although I am not an audiophile. Autocalibration is really cool. Digital Audio in (both optical and coaxial) are present (which are missing from the similar system DAV-FX375). DVD upconversion with HDMI is good and is very convinient (saved me running 5 wires {3 component video and 2 audio} from TV to DVD player)
I am not impressed with the subwoofer, Remote has lot of buttons, There are 3 menu buttons 2 display buttons, Setup Menu opens by pressing Display button. Speaker wire is thin and has special connectors for hooking up to DVD, so not too easy to upgrade the wire yourself.
Overall I am quite happy with the system. It looks pretty too

Great so far...

Pros: Auto Calibration actually works well, crisp, clean, and a decent sub.

Cons: Typical issues: crappy speak wire(thin and proprietary), hard to learn remote, etc...

Review: Keep in mind I've had this for a day, but I've run it through the ringer. After the initial setup, which was not too bad, I played Pearl Harbor's initial attack scene in DTS. Sounded great, but I knew it would sound better after calibration. I decided to run the auto calibration feature, and it couldn't have been easier. The system went through the test tones, and when it was all said and done, the screen showed pretty accurate distances, db adjustments, etc. I can honestly say that after replaying the same attack scene on Pearl Harbor, it definitely sounded better and the adjustments made by auto-calibration were close to what I would have done myself.

Overall, I bought this system as a way to "tide me over" until the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle is over and prices have dropped. I connected it to my 50" SXRD, and man is it beautiful with the HDMI upconvert. BE CAREFUL, don't try to save a couple bucks with the FX375, it doesn't feature an optical input, this product(FX500) does.

Great system, but it's not going to compete with an AcoustiMass. What do you expect for 1/5 the price? Oh yeah, and the overall contruction quality is pretty impressive too. Very little plastic.

The only downfalls I can honestly see at this point are that the included speaker wire is probably 18 or 20 gauge, and they're proprietary(not your typical speaker connections on the back of the unit, they're Sony connections). That's typical with most Sony products though.
